Cabinet Making
Honeycutt Cabinets was a subcontractor on a master bathroom remodel. Homeowner used a different company to complete the design but did not insist that contractor use cabinet company of their choice. A full design, complete with drawings and dimensions was provided to Honeycutt. They made one of the vanities 2 inches shorter than designed without consent from the homeowner. All other items were built to spec.
The team that came in to do the installation were rough around the edges and less than professional. They toe-nailed the tall linen cabinet through the top of a shelf leaving a hole with jagged edges that would snag linens. They installed the hangers for the mirrors but were told not to hang the mirrors. They helped themselves to the master closet, leaving the mirrors stacked against each other and leaning against the clothing. The cabinets were not cleaned when they left. They left saw dust and jagged edges on the floor, on shelves, and in the drawers from the drilling. All surfaces of the cabinets, inside and out, were covered in dust as if they had driven down a gravel road with them on the back of an open truck. The mirrors had adhesive stuck to them, presumably from poorly removed tape. All cabinets were delivered and installed without pulls.
A second team came back to install the pulls and fix the hole in the linen cabinet. They applied a 2 inch lathing strip across the top of the shelf, covering the hole from the toenailing and making the entire 2 inch strip useless for storing anything in a hard container, such as peroxide, rubbing alcohol or other items found in a medicine chest as they would wobble and tip over. They also installed the pulls but didn't wipe down or clean the cabinets.
They had to come back a third time to fix a major stain drip down the side of the linen cabinet along with other nicks and chips. They would not clean the cabinets and complained about other trades doing damage to the cabinets. At one point, homeowner noticed them staining and applying varnish OVER the dust. At this point, homeowner got out furniture polish so installers could clean the cabinets and see all the places that needed to be fixed. They refused to clean the cabinet so they watched while the homeowner cleaned their product and pointed out all the places that needed fixed. They then took heavy sand paper and at some places a razor blade and started hacking away at small paint droplets and adhesive residue. This, of course, caused even more damage and homeowner had to send them away for fear of completely ruining the cabinets.
Homeowner then did a thorough cleaning of cabinets and mirrors without the Honeycutt installers watching. Homeowner found that Honeycutt used cheap wood on the interior of the cabinets, especially on the shelves. The interior of the cabinets looked as though it was completed by a 2nd grader. The stain was applied inconsistently with dark spots next to light spots. Some places were rough to the touch and appeared to have a light coating of varnish, if any at all. The shelves were cut very small and left gaps on the sides, barely resting on the shelf supports. There are small nicks and dents all along the edge of the mirror frame. It was difficult, but not impossible, to remove the adhesive residue from the mirrors.
Honeycutt took a drawer front and door back to the shop to repair damage they did themselves. It took them 15 weeks (over 3 months) and 3 tries to get them fixed to satisfaction. The first time the stain was the wrong color. The second time the finish was incomplete and arrived without hardware. The third time the fix was acceptable.
The damage to the tall linen cabinet was so severe it wasn't repairable. Homeowner ended up negotiating a financial settlement with the contractor.
If one is going to spend the time and money on custom cabinets, homeowner recommends to avoid Honeycutt Custom Cabinets at all costs. It's not worth the hassle of 3 trips to do one one job plus an additional 3 trips and 3 months to complete a small repair. It's not worth the humiliation of them standing over you while you clean their product. It's not worth the frustration of trying to come to a satisfactory resolution for them to repair the product that they damaged. It's not worth the money to get a poorly finished product that's not built to spec.
