It was good fortune to have the Wooster Paint Company, owned and operated by Win Wooster, my restaining contractor, working on a neighbor’s log home in Lake Lure, North Carolina. I was immediately impressed by the attention to detail and the planned approach in the work progress seen daily. With a critical need to restain my home, this would be the time to start asking basic questions about approach, stains, compatibilities, wood cleaning, air pressures, equipment, project stages, number of coats of stain, different staining products used, time to complete the task, and so on. In this instance, each question was addressed by Win in a manner where my confidence grew with each revelation to suggest Win, with his 33 years in the paint industry, had done these wood staining projects before. He provided past locations that I could drive by. The wood stain wholesaler, LogFinish.com , vouched for Win Wooster and knew of his work experiences. And, to my benefit, Win would be available to take on my restaining project with the completion of his last job, and coming with the lack of availability of staining contractors, this was quite a score. Starting with a property “walk-around,” Win reviewed the home, the carport, the gazebo, and the two outbuildings. He calculated the square footage, focused on the accessibility, asked pointed questions about my objectives and desired end-result, and came up with the cost for the project. We agreed on the project and determined the start date. He helped in providing opinion for the stain color along with the educated “Pros and Cons” that I would have never thought about. This consultation along was well worth its weight in gold as the decisions for such a complex project could be made and we would be on the same sheet of music on an immediate basis. His dedication to the numerous tasks at hand showed immediately with early starts in his work and laying out the phases to the project that would allow ladder work in the cooler temperatures and saving other parts of the cleaning/staining that would be under roof or cover for days we had rain. Not a minute was wasted in his efforts. We spoke in the beginning of the day, a bit at lunch, and at the end of the day with conversation on progress and unexpected problems. We made decisions about acquiring additional materials, scheduling, et cetera only after discussing options. And after we reviewed the alternatives, Win would take the actions that we decided on. I had a complete trust that Win earned in demonstrating his professionalism early on and I didn’t hesitate in giving a house key for his access during times I might be away. This action alone helped to free me in allowing other non-related issues to be taken on. As the project progressed over the days, the attention to detail was obvious. The suggestions Win provided at each step of the project greatly helped in reducing delays that would come with indecision. At one point, we wanted to use a stain that was advertised to give a longer length of protection. Win mixed the stain and started the application. We were disappointed in the “look.” And because he was not satisfied, Win proceeded to sand the covering and restarted….I was very moved by his dedication. The progress was always positive and I was impressed by his resourcefulness. There was never any waste and the project came out “on time and budget.” Much credit for such a performance would come with Win wanting to move forward as much as possible on a daily basic with the aim to get the project done to my satisfaction. I would hope that this review would act to make the lives of others heading into this type of restaining project easier. Nothing more needs to be said than to get the right contractor in place to assist in managing the inherent complexities. Many things can go wrong and this would be an inappropriate time and extremely expensive session for “finger-pointing” who did or didn’t perform to the “expectations of the other party.” The selection of the right person, the right contractor, will make all the difference in having a log cabin/wood home look marvelous when all is done. As I gain nothing and run the risk of his unavailability in the future, I would invite all those folks needing the wood staining/restaining services to seek out Win Wooster (828-777-7760). Not only I can only feel extremely confident that you will be pleased to place your project in his hands, but more importantly, have had the sincere pleasure of meeting and hopefully develop a friendship with this remarkable person.
Description of Work: Ownership of a log home or cabin comes with enjoyable and fantastic moments along with the ultimate realization that this particular type of home calls for its own special maintenance. After the initial real estate investment, there arises a worrisome but unavoidable demand that ongoing close attention be given to the shrinking and expansion of the wood that would require filling of wood cracks, replacement of insulation, and reapplication of wood staining in order to preserve and give this home an opportunity for a long life. In its existence, the normal and sometimes severe climatic conditions can bring on the harmful weathering of any surface. And the log cabin/log home will require the monitoring and the periodic maintenance may call for a critical painting/restaining of the wood/log exterior. This major maintenance comes with multiple steps in the proper cleansing of the surface, filling and caulking of the cracks, applying the number of coats of protective stain, glossy or matte finish to give a complete “polished” texture, all of which, to add longevity and provide a renewed durable resistance to factors of moisture and temperature. The preplanning and subsequent search for a capable and available contractor knowledgeable with the various essential stages in working through a wood/log home restaining can be arduous as well as frustrating as there are a great many pitfalls that come with discovering that a contractor may not have all the background and experience to take on your project. No one can feel comfortable to realize that your project might be counted as an “on-the-job” training experience. From this past project experience, I would suggest that the basic expertise of the home staining contractor would include at least but not limited to the following: Skilled and if possible, licensed tradesman Related Background & Experience With Past Restaining Projects Of Comparable Size & Magnitude Knowledge About Wood Cleaning, Stripping Of Old Finishes, Air Pressures, Stain Compatibilities Have In-depth Knowledgeable In Home Building And Repair Including Electrical & Plumbing Ownership & Mastery In Use Of Dependable Tools Ownership Of Ladders/Scaffolding Comfortable Working At Heights As the number of advertised home staining contractors might create indecision which to choose, there comes the need for review of the individual/organization to help narrow the selection. Here would be the place for input to settle the nerves and help in creating a physical attraction to assist in selecting the most capable contractor for a difficult and costly project. The scope of this complex project called for the pressure cleaning and appropriate preparation to include caulking of wood cracks for the exterior surfaces of five individual structures: namely, (1) the main residence that included a two-story height, front and rear porches and flooring, (2) a two-car width carport, (3) a separate outbuilding that is used as a tool and storage shed and the surrounding deck, (4) a separate outbuilding used as an office and storage of business materials and the surrounding deck, and (5) a 12’X12’ gazebo and flooring. The project called for the contractor to have all the necessary ladders and tools for the different project stages including the removal of downspouts, security lighting, and the remounting of these items at the end of the project. The contractor did touch-up painting of doors and building trim. All surfaces were prepared prior to water pressure washing and caulk and filler Styrofoam piping was fitted into wood cracks. Two coats of stain were applied and a separate top coat of preventative gloss cover was added to give a greater life to the application. All areas above 8 feet were done on ladders and/or scaffolding. The project took about 6 weeks to complete with accounting for inclement weather and other reasons why work could not be conducted. The contractor allowed the purchase of all materials needed to complete the project. The materials for the rear porch could not be reused and a decision was made to replace the porch screening using a different design and materials. The contractor put this new design together as part of the complete project.
