It was good fortune to have the Wooster Paint Company, owned and operated by Win Wooster, my restaining contractor, working on a neighbor’s log home in Lake Lure, North Carolina. I was immediately impressed by the attention to detail and the planned approach in the work progress seen daily. With a critical need to restain my home, this would be the time to start asking basic questions about approach, stains, compatibilities, wood cleaning, air pressures, equipment, project stages, number of coats of stain, different staining products used, time to complete the task, and so on. In this instance, each question was addressed by Win in a manner where my confidence grew with each revelation to suggest Win, with his 33 years in the paint industry, had done these wood staining projects before. He provided past locations that I could drive by. The wood stain wholesaler, LogFinish.com , vouched for Win Wooster and knew of his work experiences. And, to my benefit, Win would be available to take on my restaining project with the completion of his last job, and coming with the lack of availability of staining contractors, this was quite a score.   Starting with a property “walk-around,” Win reviewed the home, the carport, the gazebo, and the two outbuildings. He calculated the square footage, focused on the accessibility, asked pointed questions about my objectives and desired end-result, and came up with the cost for the project. We agreed on the project and determined the start date. He helped in providing opinion for the stain color along with the educated “Pros and Cons” that I would have never thought about. This consultation along was well worth its weight in gold as the decisions for such a complex project could be made and we would be on the same sheet of music on an immediate basis.   His dedication to the numerous tasks at hand showed immediately with early starts in his work and laying out the phases to the project that would allow ladder work in the cooler temperatures and saving other parts of the cleaning/staining that would be under roof or cover for days we had rain. Not a minute was wasted in his efforts. We spoke in the beginning of the day, a bit at lunch, and at the end of the day with conversation on progress and unexpected problems. We made decisions about acquiring additional materials, scheduling, et cetera only after discussing options. And after we reviewed the alternatives, Win would take the actions that we decided on. I had a complete trust that Win earned in demonstrating his professionalism early on and I didn’t hesitate in giving a house key for his access during times I might be away. This action alone helped to free me in allowing other non-related issues to be taken on.   As the project progressed over the days, the attention to detail was obvious. The suggestions Win provided at each step of the project greatly helped in reducing delays that would come with indecision. At one point, we wanted to use a stain that was advertised to give a longer length of protection. Win mixed the stain and started the application. We were disappointed in the “look.” And because he was not satisfied, Win proceeded to sand the covering and restarted….I was very moved by his dedication.   The progress was always positive and I was impressed by his resourcefulness. There was never any waste and the project came out “on time and budget.” Much credit for such a performance would come with Win wanting to move forward as much as possible on a daily basic with the aim to get the project done to my satisfaction.   I would hope that this review would act to make the lives of others heading into this type of restaining project easier. Nothing more needs to be said than to get the right contractor in place to assist in managing the inherent complexities. Many things can go wrong and this would be an inappropriate time and extremely expensive session for “finger-pointing” who did or didn’t perform to the “expectations of the other party.” The selection of the right person, the right contractor, will make all the difference in having a log cabin/wood home look marvelous when all is done.   As I gain nothing and run the risk of his unavailability in the future, I would invite all those folks needing the wood staining/restaining services to seek out Win Wooster (828-777-7760). Not only I can only feel extremely confident that you will be pleased to place your project in his hands, but more importantly, have had the sincere pleasure of meeting and hopefully develop a friendship with this remarkable person.
