Initially, we only called Paradise Decking to get a second quote for our deck job; we had had a quote from another contractor who seemed okay, but we just wanted to make sure his prices were in line. Once we talked to Brendon, though, we decided to go with Paradise. We liked Brendon's design better, the price was comparable to the other company, Brendon seemed more knowledgeable, and basically just seemed to love what he does. We also liked the fact that Paradise was a local, family-owned company, as opposed to the other company, which we knew to be a franchise.

Once Paradise Decking's trailer was parked outside our house, we started to hear stories from people in our neighborhood. Not contractor horror stories— happy stories. We knew Paradise had done some work in our neighborhood (seeing their trailer was how we'd heard of them in the first place). We just didn't know how much. Turns out they'd done the decks we'd admired on the houses on either side of us. Our crew chief, Troy, recalled working on both of them early in his time with the company over 20 years earlier. I felt that it said something good about the company if they retained employees that long.

We heard other stories, too. One neighbor quoted her husband saying that their screened porch from Paradise was one of the few things in life that had actually exceeded his expectations. Of all the stories I heard, all were very favorable—not a single negative story in the bunch.

Our work was finished yesterday, and I could not be more pleased. Our deck, made with composite decking (Trex) is spacious, sturdy, and attractive. So much nicer than the sad little rectangle of wood we had before. Here are other things my husband and I liked about Paradise Decking:
  • Prompt: Our crew showed up promptly every day and worked hard.
  • Knowledgeable: Whenever my husband and I had a question, Troy was able to answer it clearly in a way that made sense. We never felt like we were being sold a bill of goods.
  • Neat: Construction work does involve a certain amount of mess, of course, but these guys cleaned up after themselves every day, and washed down the deck on their way out the door yesterday.
  • Fair pricing: When Brendon originally quoted the work, there was lattice up around the old deck. When it was torn down, it was clear that the existing posts were not in good condition, and were going to have to be taken down and replaced.  At that point, they had us on the hook. They could have quoted us almost anything for the additional material and work, and as long as it wasn't outrageous, we would have had to pay it. But Larry, the owner, quoted us a price that was more than fair.
  • Professional: I work from home, so these guys were literally outside my window all day. They were hard-working, polite, and professional. I heard one cuss word during the whole time they were out there. They heard more than that coming from INSIDE the house.
  • Pleasant: Who's ever sad to have contractors leave their house? We kind of are! Our black Lab, who went insane the first time the crew came to work, soon fell in love with them. She would cry in the house like a lovesick teenager from the time their trucks pulled up in the morning until they got out and greeted her.  I think she was a little sad they didn't take her along when they left.
  • Efficient: Initially Brendon told us the job would take about a week and a half, but on the first day of work Troy told us it would take about three, and he was right. The guys worked very efficiently and got things done when they predicted.
Then there's the finished product itself. It's everything we wanted, and maybe more. I know we're going to enjoy this deck, and if we sell the house down the road, I'm sure this deck will be a selling point. I can confidently recommend Paradise Decking.

I am so glad we decided to go with Paradise Decking!!! When we first met with Larry Knight,we thought we just wanted a trellis, possibly a fireplace, but we weren't exactly sure. Larry turned us to Greg Young, an outdoor designer. Greg guided us with his expertise and made a drawing for us. From there, we got a couple of quotes and at first glance, Paradise seemed higher. However no other companies can compare to the quality of work that Paradise provides. Larry told me of several projects he had done. We were able to go by and see his work and talk to his customers. You can actually stand back and look at a porch or trellis and tell if it was done by Paradise...it's that good! Larry's employees were wonderful. They're punctual, professional and really guide you through the process. They know what looks good and when it comes to the smaller decisions along the way, I'd always go with their opinion. They're very efficient but at the same time artistic. We now love our outdoor space and use it all the time!

We reviewed Angie's List and several online resources to find companies in our area with experience and overall good reviews.  After meeting with the company's owner, Larry Knight, we were impressed with his experience, photos of his work at other homes, and more importantly, his excellent eye at showing us why our original plans would not work.  He could immediately visualize the way the project would lay out more efficiently, aesthetically, and cost-effectively.  He spent most of a morning taking us to several homes whose projects he completed.  He allowed us to speak to the owners of the homes who were obviously pleased with his work.  I think I became most impressed when he even introduced us to a homeowner who was not happy initially with the way his project started, but explained how things got better after voicing his concerns.  He ultimately got the outcome he wanted without extra cost.  Our project went very smoothly.  It's important to keep in touch with the project manager regularly to make sure things evolve the way you want them to.  If I had a question or concern, Larry got back to me within the day of me leaving a message on his phone.  He staffs most everyone instead of hiring a bunch of subs, which means he takes responsibility for the project.  I think your best served by finding someone like this company where they take pride in their work as craftsmen.  They were there every day, including some weekends, on time, and cleaned up after themselves every day before leaving.  There was never any open soda cans lying around or trash.  We love our deck and screened-in porch.  It came out much better than I expected.  It cost more than the other estimates, but it is worth it because of how much we use it, enjoy it, and are worry-free about maintenance.

I got what I paid for from Paradise Decking & Contracting. They did an OK job. The workers showed up on time and completed it on time. I would probably recommend them to family and friends.
