My husband originally wanted to use a pod to handle our local move. After reading some horror stories and then reading A-1's reviews on Angie's List, we decided to give A-1 a call. After talking to Doug and getting his hourly rate for 4 guys to handle loading and unloading, we decided to go with A-1. We could not have been happier. Mike and three others showed up right on time the day of the move (Our original move date was a month earlier but was delayed due to problems with our buyer's loan. A-1 had no issues with the reschedule.) I was still sealing some boxes when they arrived. They started right away and barely stopped for lunch. They brought free boxes for moving the TV's and garment boxes for the closets. They loaded all of these. You never would have known they were being paid by the hour. Our schedule was to load the day before closing and then have the guys come back and drive to the new house and unload right after the 11:00 closing. Our buyers loan package was held up and the closing was delayed. We found this out after the truck was loaded and the guys gone. We called Mike after 9:00 that night and, since we did not know what time the next day the close would happen, he rescheduled the move to the day after we closed. There was a slight storage fee since we were tieing up the truck for an additional day but it was minimal. Our close ended up happening after 5:00 pm so the reschedule worked out perfectly. Mike and the same crew returned right on time and at the same time we got the key to the new house. Some final items were loaded and they drove to the new house The unloading went very quickly. It had rained fairly hard the day the truck set and one of the boxes got a little wet. Mike was extremely apologetic and offered to have the few wet items dry cleaned at their expense (and the items were only a little damp). While the crew was fast and efficient, they were also careful. They even put felt on the bottom of furniture to protect the hardwood. Nothing was damaged in the move. In prior moves, the crews started talking about a tip before the job was half done. A-1's guys never mentioned a tip. We decided to give them one since they were so fast, careful and friendly. And they handled part of the move in the rain and never complained. When they got the tip they were surprised and appreciative. Our experience with A-1 was nothing but positive. Affordable and professional. We highly recommend them for moving services.

On the scheduled date it poured rain and they were able to change our move (along with others who wanted to avoid moving in the rain) to the next day. Doug alerted us that the furniture pads available from the rental company would be too thin to properly protect the furniture. His crew used their superior padding on the furniture and everything arrived in Nashville in impeccable shape. The movers, who helped unload on that end, noted how professionally the truck was packed. Doug is justifiably proud of his staff which have many years of professional packing experience. I highly recommend them.

I initially spoke with one of the owners, Doug, who was very helpful and knowledgable. On the morning of the move, Doug, his son Mike, (who is a co-owner of the company), and the rest of the A1 guys arrived on time. They were extremely careful in packing, moving and loading our items. Each member of the crew was top notch, very kind and conscientious. We have moved over 10 times during the past 22 years and would definitely say that this was the best move we have experienced! Highly recommend A1 Movers!!!
Description of Work: A1 Moving partially packed and moved our household goods from our 3 story, 3000 square foot house to our new home several miles away, during a two day period. Before the move, they provided free wardrobe and plasma TV boxes, which was very helpful. On the day of the move, they also disassembled our beds and our Rainbow playground, leaving the main area intact so it would reassemble more quickly but still fit into the truck.

It's been a little over a month since my move, but I didn't want to neglect reviewing A1 Moving. When I first called Doug, I was very apprehensive about what I might encounter. I had used a different company for my previous move (4 years earlier), and had vivid memories of the damage that was done to my furniture (which they refused to pay for). Because I didn't want to repeat that experience, I decided to sign up for Angie's List to see if I could find a reputable mover that wouldn't damage my furniture. If you've logged on looking for the same thing, you no doubt have seen the stellar reviews earned by A1 Moving. I saw them too, and decided to give them a call, talk for a bit, and compare them to one or two other possibilities. When I called Doug, he was very polite, and he initially gave me an estimate over the phone - based on what I told him I had. He also explained the care that his movers take to wrap furniture to ensure that it is not damaged during the move process. Finally, he indicated that he would be onsite for at least part of the move, and that the other co-owner, his son Mike, would be there for the entire process. I was pleased, but I still wanted to call other outfits to compare price and approach. I did call another mover whose name I got from Angie's list, and they also sounded reasonable. In the end, though, I decided to go with A1. I was a little apprehensive about the price - given that I also needed to have packing done - but I decided that undamaged furniture was more important to me in the end than saving a few bucks. I called Doug back, and he said that he could come by my place to give me another estimate. We set up a time, and he arrived on schedule. He explained the price for packing materials (boxes, wrap, etc...) as well as the price for the move itself. He also estimated the amount of time that the move would take - stating that he tended to err on the high side to avoid any claims that a customer was misled. I agreed to the price, and told him I would call him when I definitely knew the final date of the move. Sometime later, I called back with the date, and we were good to go. One of the things that greatly impressed me about A1 actually happened before the move: I am a night-owl, and one night I called Doug with a question about the upcoming move. It must have been past 10:00pm, and I fully expected to be greeted by a voicemail message. Imagine my surprise when Doug answered the phone. When he heard how incredulous I was,.he told me that A1 has 24 hour emergency service. I was very impressed, as I have learned over time that one of the things that makes a stellar vendor is accessibility. On the day of the move, Doug and the crew arrived a little late - due to the fact that their truck had broken down. Doug called me early that morning, though, to make sure I was aware of the situation, and to give their ETA. They arrived right when they said they would, and immediately began to assess what needed to be done (they started the clock upon their actual arrival). On site were Doug, Mike, and 3 other men. Since they were being paid by the hour, I decided to help with the packing to save some money, and they were perfectly fine with that. They helped me to move boxes that I'd packed if they were too heavy for me, and were always very professional. The one small complaint that I had occurred during the packing process: I was moving from a gated community which is sometimes tricky to get in and out of. Soon after their arrival, the guys went back downstairs to move their truck to a better spot for loading, and were unable to get back into the complex because of the gates. They ended up encountering one of the managers - who opened the gate for them - but the process took about 1/2 hour. They obviously couldn't work during that time, since they were locked out, but they did not deduct the time from the total at the end of the move, and it was included in the price. In the grand scheme of things, this is really a nit, but it did increase the total cost of the move by a non-trivial amount - owing to the price that was charged per hour. But that aside, after they were able to get back inside the building, they rolled up their sleeves and went to work. They were extremely careful in their packing - wrapping all of the large pieces of furniture in shrinkwrap, and using packing paper for delicate items such as dishes. They used special boxes for all of my glassware, and were extremely careful with my electronics (computers, televisions, etc...). When possible, they used my own pillows to provide packing for some items - thus saving money while still keeping things safe in the process. I was very impressed with the care that they took, as they treated my furniture as if it were their own. I was also extremely impressed with the knowledge that one of the movers - Cliff - had when it came to furniture. Turns out he fixes furniture on the side, and he gave me quite a few suggestions on how to spruce up some of the worn areas on my pieces. He and the others also suggested the use of felt pads to protect the wood floors in the place I would be moving to, and that turned out to be excellent advice. Doug's high-end estimate on the move time turned out to be accurate, as we had to make a stop at a storage facility to pick up another item of mine for the move. Needless to say, it was a very long day. But everyone was always professional, and when we pulled up to the destination of the move, the guys got to work immediately unpacking the truck. They asked where all of the items should go in the new place, and I appreciated that (it helped me to locate where things were long after the movers were gone). They also took great care not to scar walls or floors when carrying in large pieces of furniture. A1 really showed their expertise during the last part of the day, on two separate pieces of furniture: The first was a desk that I've had for years. Mike and Cliff realized that they wouldn't be able to get it in the house as it was (because of its shape), and they literally took it apart and brought it in in pieces. Once inside, they put it back together again prefectly. And they did all this quite quickly. The second bit of heroics came at the end of the night, when they were trying to move in the last piece - a very long dresser that had to go in the master bedroom. Unfortunately, because of some tricky angles, it looked for some time like it would be impossible to get the piece into the room. Three of the guys were attempting to turn it just the right way, but it just wouldn't go inside without possibly scarring a wall or a corner. Everyone stood back and scratched their heads for awhile - making suggestions. They decided to remove the drawers to see if that would help, but it still looked impossible. At this point, Mike was telling me that it wouldn't go, and I was losing hope. There were no other rooms that could accommodate this piece. It's a dresser, and it has to go in the master bedroom. Not willing to give up, the three guys tried one more time, and they were able to turn the piece at just the right angle to sneak it into the room with just a millimeter or so to spare. Needless to say, I was extremely impressed and thankful. Later, when I told the story to friends, they mentioned that they had had similar issues with one or two pieces during their move, and their movers had simply solved the problem by scarring both their furniture and walls to get past the tricky spots. A1 was able to do the job without leaving a single mark on a single wall or floor, or on my dresser. So all in all, I was extremely pleased with the job that A1 did. If you are looking for professional, knowledgeable movers who will treat your gear as if it was their own, you should definitely contact A1. They are a first rate company.

I called up Doug, the owner, to get a quote. I was a little dismayed by the price but it was not astronomical and after seeing the competence of the moving crew I was satisfied that I had received value for my money. Doug also helped me out on the price by giving me a military discount. I am ALWAYS greatful when an individual or business expresses gratitude in any fashion for those of us who have chosen to serve. After calling a few more movers I went back to Doug at A-1 and went with him. He promised professionalism from his bonded, insured employees and they delivered. The men arrived on time, calling first to ensure that we were ready. They were business-like but friendly and did everything that we requested of them, including moving a huge king-sized bed from the upstairs bedroom downstairs and setting it back up and moving a piano down three flights of stairs and into the truck. They were not afraid to get dirty and took great care with all of our belongings. If I need help moving in the future and Fayetteville is not too far for them to travel, I would be willing to pay the extra money necessary to have this company pack my furniture again. Set it up [with very little notice] with Doug who was super accomodating. His son Mike showed up with three helpers at the appointed time and did a superb job. When it turned out I underestimated the amount of work it was, they arranged to come back the next day with no fuss; amazing. Soper guys, helped pack some of my stuff, I drove all the way cross country, and except for one dent due to a strap being a bit too tight, there wasn't a scratch on anyhting! I highly recommed A1, they are super.

Description of Work: My daughter and her family were moving to Winston-Salem from Atlanta on Monday, Aug.1. They had help loading a 26 foot Penske truck in Atlanta and realized that it would be impossible to unload the truck in Winston-Salem the next day. They were very tired, she was sick and they have two small children. In a panic she called me on Monday, Aug.1st looking for help to unload the truck in Winston-Salem the next morning Aug. 2nd. I told her I would do what I could to find help but I wasn't optimistic as I had very little advance notice and I lived in Cary, NC. I was already a member of Angie's List in Cary and I immediately added Winston-Salem to my account. I called two companies and left messages but they never called me back. Lifting up a prayer I called Doug at A-1 Moving and he couldn't have been nicer. He offered to send his son Mike with a crew to help us out despite the short notice.

They arrived right on time after keeping s update multipletimes about their arrival. They sent plenty of guys who were all very friendly. They planned out the Best way to get the armoire down and did a very expeditious job, finished in about 30 minutes. And they even took a different dresser back upstairs for us! Also, they will come by and pick up all your empty boxes and packing paper when you are done unpacking!
Description of Work: A very delicate, 100-year-old armoire (77x67x25") was moved from our second floor, down windy stairs to the first floor. Because it wouldn't fit down the stairs, they disassembled the whole thing and put it back together perfectly at the end.

I thought that Doug (business owner) was always professional. Prior to the move, he visited my home to give an estimate cost for the move. A day prior to the move date, I received a phone call confirming the timing of the move. On the day itself, Doug gave me a call prior to his guys arriving at my home. Despite charging an hourly rate, I was given an extra person (total of 4) to help with the move. Doug's son, Mike, was very pleasant and offered suggestions to help the move less stressful. After the move, I received a phone call from Doug asking how the move went. Overall, my experience with A1 movers was great. Should I find myself moving again, they would be on the top of my list to call. Highly recommended.

We could not have chosen a better moving company than A-1! The employees were prompt, kind, very considerate, and extremely hard-working. They were so accommodating - I had only scheduled one day only to realize that we really needed more help, and they were able to come back the next day to finish the job. Doug, his sons, and all of the movers were excellent. The quote was spot on, they were quick and nice as can be. They even took some furniture to one of their contacts to have it repaired(I broke it not them) at a very reasonable cost. I would highly recommend them to anyone looking for a solid group of movers.

They did a great job. They were easy to work with. Everything was packed and unpacked without any issues.
Description of Work: A-1 moving did a exceptional job moving us out of one home and into another. We moved from a 1900 sqt ft home to a 4000 sqt ft home. They tailored everything to our needs. Originally we had plan to pack one house on Thursday and move to the new house the next day, which would be at no additional cost to separate the move into 2 days. We changed our minds and wanted to move everything all in one day and A-1 moving was more than happy to change the plan. The movers were very professional, experienced, easy to work with, and we also had a fun time moving with the guys which in most cases isn't always the most fun thing to do. They made multiple contacts with us prior to the move to make sure of our expectations of them. A-1 price was very competitive with other movers if not one of the cheapest with the best customer service. Although they do tend to quote on the high side they were on the low side for actual hours used. We were quoted 8-12 hours and we were charged for 9.5 hours and that included about 1 hour of downpour rain where the moving of things into the truck was minimal, other things did get staged inside the house at the point. I would highly recommend A-1 moving to anyone for their all around exceptional service.

Doug and his team were very professional and showed up on time and packed the truck in record time. He brought extra people to load so the day would not be as long. All furniture was wrapped and secured before it was loaded on the truck. The team that unloaded at the new house worked very well together and unpacked the truck and set up furniture very effieciently. They took the time at the beginning to put materials down to protect the pine floors which had just been finished less than a week before. All furniture was carried in and nothing touched the floors until it was in place. There was not a scratch on the pine floors after the move. I was very pleased with the move and the experience with Doug and his team. I will use them again.

From the begining Doug with A-1 movers was very accomodating to my changing schedule and throughout the entire experience the customer service was amazing! The guys who did my move were quick and efficient but also very careful- they did a great job and were extremely polite, kind, and helpful. I thought it was a great value and would definitely call A-1 movers again- I have absolutely nothing even slightly negative to say about the experience- everything was great!

A wonderful company! I recently purchased a home and unfortunately, most of the service providers have shown up late or not at all, underestimated their price and then had to come back to redo things. With A-1 moving, I finally had a positive experience. The owner responds best to phone calls and is very friendly and professional. I had to postpone my move by one week due to ice/snow and he was wonderful about it. 3 men came with their truck at 10am as scheduled. They walked through the condo with me to go over exactly what was being moved. All furniture and glass was individually wrapped in blankets/padding. They obviously know what they are doing and packed the truck where nothing was broken. What impressed me the most was the pace at which they worked, since they charge by the hour. Other companies had estimated my move taking 3-4 hrs and they completed it in 2 hrs 15 minutes. I also used the coupon on Angie's list for 10% off. They made sure all the boxes and furniture were put in the correct place. After the move was completed, we walked through the new house to make sure everything was where I wanted and if I had any questions. Overall, a very good experience that gave me hope in the service industry again after my recent bad experiences. I highly recommend using A-1 Moving and have nothing negative to say at all.

I checked Angie's List for possible movers before I decided whom to contact. Of the two closest to my house, A-1 Moving had by far the best customer reviews and professional licenses. I emailed and then called A-1 two days before I needed help moving and asked whether they would be working on Christmas Eve. The owner, Mr. Hardshoe, said he would send two movers the morning I needed them, Dec. 24. He explained his pricing system--2 hours minimum, $25/hour/mover, no charge for distance to/from his place of business. Since the move would be done on the morning of Christmas Eve, we agreed that I would call him as soon as we picked up the moving van and he would send his two sons immediately. I did that; and we set a time of 10:30 a.m. for them to be at my house. They came a few minutes early and completed the moving in a little under an hour. They were on time, courteous, very careful with all furniture and boxes, and very good at packing the moving van, which had to be packed carefully for a trip to Tennessee on icy roads. A note: The web site and email information on Angie's List goes to a national service that contacts local franchises. A-1 did not answer my email, so I called. The owner prefers telephone calls to email. This company is well worth a live-voice phone call. I was satisfied with every aspect of their service, from my initial conversation with the owner to the courtesy, efficiency, and careful handling of my furniture and household goods by his two sons. The owner gave me a price and stuck to it, no questions asked, no discussion, no hidden costs. His sons arrived exactly when he said they would, they did a very fine job of helping with any moving I needed, and they completed the job in half the time they had to do it. I would recommend this company highly, without reservation, to anyone needing a mover.

What a wonderful company. From the beginning of the process (i.e. setting appoinment for estimate) to the end (i.e. asking us if everything was in the right place, collecting payment) these guys were nothing but a pleasure and ease to work with on a move. They accomadated us by rescheulding since our home was not ready to be moved into, scheduled for a Sunday move. They were on time, 8:58am for the 9;00am appointment. Doug worked quickly to assign tasks to his (5) men. The men were extreamly courteous, handled our possessions with care, and mild manner. If they did not know the answer, they asked us. Once we arrived at the house to unload, they worked quickly to get things in place. Matter of fact, they placed felt on the bottom of our furniture for us in an effort to not damage our floors. Such a great experience for us. We would use them again and highly recommend Doug and his crew for moving. Very professional, courteous, hard-working group of men.
Description of Work: They moved our 3 bedroom/2 bath house and our 10X10 storage unit in around 8 hours (including packing). We moved from Kernersville, NC to Winston-Salem, NC.

A1 Moving moved me multiple times and a couple of times with very short notice from me..everything went great and I could not have asked for anything better..they really took great care of all of my stuff every time. And the pricing cant be beat. I would tell anyone to use their services if they want a top quality job done and someone that really takes care of their customers property.
Description of Work: A1 moving has moved me on three different occasions and each time they did an excellent job in all areas and with no broken items..They have also did some small moves for me as well...They did an emergency move for me with less than an hours notice and did great!

Extremely pleased with service. All employees worked consistently without taking lunch breaks etc.. Took great pains not to damage furniture or house. Excellent company to work with, highly recommend!!

Their price per hour was less than a competitor's, but time was estimated to be 6 hours more than the competitor's estimate. So I ended up going with the competitor. I wish I had not, because the other company went 3 hours over their estimate and I wasn't terribly pleased with their service. A1 had a lot of good recommendations on Angie's List; the competitor had good recommendations, but just much less of a history (I think only 1 or 2 comments). If I had to do it again I would choose A1 instead.
