I have been a patient of this practice for over 50 years starting with Dr. Povlich. In the last 1-2 years after Dr. Rich left, things started to change. My hygenist I had had for over 20 years and other senior hygienists left after their pay was cut over 20%; extra services were being pushed. Recently they told me I would need 2 crowns. Crown 1 was needed immediately and the cost was $1462 for a porcelain crown and $306 for core buildup, a total of $1768. I was told I had decay in the tooth. They said crown 2 could wait. I had a second opinion. Using the X-rays sent over by this practice, the second dentist found 1. Crown 1 was needed. After performing the procedure he said there was no decay and no core build up needed. 2. Crown 2 was not needed. Old black tarter was found on this tooth dating 6 months after my old hygenist had left. 3. The price for the porcelain crown was $841.50 after receiving a 10% for Sr. Discount and 5% for cash. Before discount the price would have been $990. If I had needed a core buildup that cost would have been $165. From my experience, I would recommend you call around for A rated dentists in the area. The June 2017 internet report of Average Crown Prices in north Raleigh listed the average price for a porcelain crown at $1030, the 95th percentile price was $1303. Tart and Smith was $1462, higher than 95% of dentist in the area. I did my own checking of eight A listed dentists in the area by insurance code for the crown (the same for all dentists) and Tart and Smith were 13-46% higher priced. Call around for prices, get a second opinion, be aware of the service of hygenist after senior people leave the practice. Be a little cynical, don’t be.ieve everything they tell you unless you have it confirmed. I learned the hard way.

I just love them. I like them because they're very good and thorough. Everyone of their hygienists are very good and personable. I actually enjoy going to the dentist and I had a huge fear of going to the dentist growing up.

Very good. They are an excellent dentist, but they are pretty expensive. Super friendly and personable.

I wanted to have my teeth cleaned and have a general checkup, and was hoping to find a dentist to be my regular provider. I also wanted to have a tooth evaluated that had bothered me off and on for more than a year.  I was told that I would need to make two separate appointments, that the state of NC wouldn't allow them to clean my teeth and provide the evaluation in the same appointment. I accepted this and made the first appointment for the evaluation. I stated at the beginning of this appointment that I was not interested in a laundry list of procedures they would like to perform on my teeth, just wanted to establish care and have my teeth check over for any significant problems. I am aware that many dentists have gone to a "treatment plan" model where they give their patients a list of procedures their teeth require amounting to many thousands of dollars and encourage them to methodically chip away at the list of treatments (caps, replace all the old metal fillings, bonding, etc.). I also know that many practices provide compensation to their hygienists for successfully promoting these treatments. And this is what I received at this appointment: A list of $10,000 worth of caps & filling replacements that were important to do in my mouth to prevent my teeth from cracking and then falling out. Um, really?  I have had great dental care under my previous dentist for 14 years, and I'm thinking he would have mentioned it if all my teeth were ready to crack and come apart.
I did not return to Rich, Smith and Tart, because I told them explicitly that I did not want the laundry list of expensive treatments, just a cleaning, and what they gave me was no cleaning and a laundry list of expensive treatments.  I moved on to another dentist who not only did the evaluation and the cleaning in the same appointment, but completely understood the frustration patients have with dentists overselling their treatments. He also noticed that the tooth that had been bothering me needed fixing, and did just that.

She's good. The whole group is a well-run machine. Everyone is friendly.

They have great staff, great office environment and great doctor. Dr. Tart is great. I've been seeing him for about 2 years. They're just really good. They get us in.

The staff was extremely accommodating and helped me with all my paperwork. They saw me promptly and treated me as if I had been a patient all my life. I had my first cavity and Dr Rich explained the whole process of filling it. They communicated with my Mom and told her everything that needed to be done. I was in and out very quickly.

From the minute I walked through the door the customer service was unbelievable. The entire staff makes you feel like you are at home. Melissa did my initial exam, and she was very thorough, friendly and efficient. I was then seen by Dr. Tart, and she was equally as professional, thorough and friendly. Amy did my cleaning, and she was an absolute dream. This entire staff was a delight to work with, and I would highly recommend this office to anyone I know. This is hands down one of the best dental offices I have ever been to. So glad I made the switch. Very very impressed.

It went quite well with Rich Smith and Tart. They were very nice. I decided to go with them based on the atmosphere and the way they act and stuff. They are very nice. They are very easy to get an appointment with. The wait time is pretty short.

He is unbelievable. He is very good. I keep going there because of the knowledge, overall treatment, the respect and just everything. I think he is the best dentist I have ever been to.

The temporary solution of gluing the old crown in place was much appreciated. Although the crown did not appear damaged, it was damaged and had to be replaced, but the temporary solution allowed me to return to work and resume normal daily activities--including talking, smiling, and eating. I greatly appreciate the emergency treatment. I would highly recommend Dr Tart for any dental needs.

I had an ongoing issue with a cracked tooth and a temporary I had never had completed. The staff is friendly, lots of new patient perks. The environment is very non stressful. When a referral was needed they did that and worked well with the specialist they referred me too.

I can't say enough good things about this practice. The staff is consistently friendly and helpful. Amy and Drs. Rich and Smith are all fantastic (I have no experience with Dr. Tart yet). Their bedside manner is top notch. I've referred numerous friends and family to the practice, including my wife when we first started dating. We are now taking our 4-year-old son there as well.

As i the case with any popular dental practice, it may take a little time to get your first dental cleaning appointment. However, once you're in the cycle, it's easy to keep regular cleaning appointments (assuming you're scheduling the next one 6 months out). I've also had good luck picking up someone else's canceled appointment when I've had to cancel mine close to the actual date. As for follow-up visits for things like dental work, I've never had had a problem getting an appointment within a few week's time.

I've never felt rushed or brushed aside at this practice. The staff has always made time available for me to ask questions - and get answers - before I leave the appointment. I am more than willing to put up with occasional wait times to get the level of service I get here. And to be fair, I frequently take the last appointment slot of the day, which I imagine is the most likely to be delayed by the day's events.

The service that was provided was excellent. They did good work.

Despite the fact that Dr. Tart was about 30 min behind due to an emergency, the intial interview went well. I explained my immediate need for a broken crown and then I wanted enough work done to get my smile back. Dr. Tart listened to everything and was really positive and confident the she could do all that needed to be done. I have since gotten my crown fixed and my teeth cleaned. I am well on my way to a more confident smile. Thank you Dr. Tart , Amy, Brenda and Mellissa. All of the office staff are friendly and professional. The atmosphere is makes you feel almost happy to be there.

Great provider and staff, office is very well run.

My father went in and was evaluated. They asked him questions to ascertain the problem. They explained they would alter the dentures so they would not rub. They adjusted the dentures with their tools in the office. THey instructed him to come back if there were any issues.
WIth my mouthguard and subsequent cracked tooth, they took a mold of my existing tooth, they put a temporary fix on the tooth and sent the mold out for a cap. They also fitted me for a mouth guard. I went back and had the crown put on and the mouth guard adjusted. each time I go to the dentist they have me bring in the mouthguard to make sure the fit is still good and if anything is off they adjust it as a courtesy.

The staff and the doctor is friendly. They do a good job.

The bridge and crown work went well. They even greeted me with a smoothie at the end of my visit!
