The good news - the person who answered the phone (female) was very responsive and helpful. She said a technician would be out the same day, which was great, and would call me with 30 minutes notice before he arrived. I was very happy that they could provide someone the same day.
The bad news - the technician did not call before coming and showed up while I was engaged with another service provider on a separate matter. I wish he had called as promised so I could have avoided this conflict.  
My original theory was that the animal was in the basement so the technician donned overalls and went down to investigate. He said he could not find anything and that it did not smell in the basement, so it was probably in a wall somewhere and prepared to leave. He was covered in mud from the crawlspace and walked all through my house leaving muddy footprints as he went. Most technicians dealing with crawlspaces know to bring disposable footies for when they re-enter the house. So I was frustrated that I now had mud to scrub out of the rugs in 3 rooms. I suggested we check the attic before he went and he said that there was a low likelihood of it being in the attic. I insisted that we check anyway. Sure enough, as soon as we pulled down the attic stairs, the smell was very strong. We both went up there and began looking around. Although it was clearly somewhere very close judging by the smell,  he did not find it and left, with my check for $100.
The smell in the house was overwhelming so I called another company. They sent someone out and he literally found it in 10 seconds - literally. 10 seconds. This was clearly a case of the Smith technician not having sufficient experience for the job. The second company did several things differently:
1. they immediately asked where in the house I first noticed the smell. They then investigated that area themselves and noted where it was in relation to the attic layout.
2. they knew from experience that animals often get in near the exhaust fan, which was also near the origin of the smell, so they checked that area first.  The animal was in plain sight, on top of the insulation, right beside the exhaust fan. They were incredulous that someone else didn't find it.
I do not enjoy writing negative reviews but I am very disappointed in this experience. $100 is significant to me and in this case it was for nothing. If the Smith technicians are not trained and experienced in locating dead animals in homes, that should not be a service the company advertises or provides.

It was excellent. They came when they said they would. They sent a very knowledgeable person. They offered different options on things I could do and things I might want to do. They have been in Raleigh for a long time and a lot of my neighbors use them.

They cleaned out all of the traps. Once a quarter, they come out and spray around the outside to prevent any critters from coming inside. The gentleman was very courteous and professional.

Very happy! Because we have a service contract, we can call any time and receive appointments quickly. This was especially helpful when we had a persistent problem with mice one winter! The guys are always professional and very thorough. Knowledgeable, too.

I have used Smith Exterminating for 7 years and at first I had to call them back a couple times but after that every thing went fine. I never saw critters of any kind (flys, ants, gnats, spiders,or mosquitoes) inside my house. This summer I have had to call them out between sprayings and I've still had to deal with gnats, ants and even been bitten by spiders. They may as we'll be spraying water!!
