The work went very well, and we were very please with David Matthews professionalism, responsiveness and noticeably pleasant to deal with. He had a great crew that did a fantastic job (including clean up) under his direction. We would definitely hire him again and recommend him to others.

Nate showed up for an estimate as promised and I showed him the two trees to be removed. I asked him if they were bonded and insured, and was assured that they were. Nate pointed out that it would be tricky removing the trees because of how one of the large limbs it was hanging over the house. I told him that's why we wanted to hire professionals, and he assured me it could be removed without damaging the house.
He returned with a crew of two and removed the trees seemingly with no problem. The next day my husband checked out the work and found that 2 or 3 shingles were sheared off flush to the roof right at the crown. We weren't sure whether the damage was done during or prior to the tree removal until we saw pieces of the damaged shingles lying on top of the leaves beneath. This all took place during the first week of December during a dry and windy period, so there was no way anything was going to survive being buried by leaves for more than a day or two.
We contacted Nate and he agreed to come out and have a look. Nothing happened for about a week, so my husband called him again and he said he was busy with a couple jobs on the other side of town and asked if it would be okay to come out after about another week. He agreed. About two weeks later I contacted him again about coming out, and he began yelling into the phone about how he hated it when people tried to get over on him, how we are the 1 out of 100 people who have a complaint about their work so it must be us with the problem, and how the shingles were already damaged by the tree hitting the house (in the wind I assume he meant).
Honestly, I was not complaining...I just wanted to know when he was coming out to look. Instead, I found myself asking him over and over to stop yelling while he went on a long, repetitive tirade for what seemed like several minutes. My husband came in to see what as going on, and I put my him on the line. I will let him tell the rest.
So I got on the phone with Nate and the first thing he did was to accuse us of trying to cheat him. He went on for a while repeating the things he said above. He asked me can I tell him for sure that the shingles were not already "creased with cracks running along the edge". I told him I didn't know and that they may well have been, but they looked fine from below. I'm sure he didn't hear that becaues he was already screaming at me before I finished the sentence. After some shouting back in forth, I decided to wait him out. When he finally stopped, I asked him to explain how the shingles could have already been broken if the pieces were lying on top of the leaves. Again, he could only have heard the first part of that before he started screaming. The conversation deteriorated further from that point, and ended with the only result being that they were not going to repair the damage they caused. It was actually kind of comical. I have never known someone to flip out like that on the phone, especially someone who is trying to run a business.
I have no reason to doubt that they have 99% satisfaction rate (no real reason to believe it either actually), and if everything goes well, I am sure you will have a good experience with this company. What I can tell you from our experience is that you don't want to be working with these guys when things don't all go perfectly.
Response from MATTHEWS TREE SERVICE
"To My Future Customers: This customer contacted me regarding the removal of two trees that were encroaching on her roof and chimney. She stated that the trees had already caused damage to the roof and that she was removing them to prevent further damage in preparation to sell her home. We agreed upon a price and Matthews Tree Service completed the work the following week, while the customer was at home. Upon completion of the work, I did a walk-through with the customer and confirmed that everything was done to her satisfaction. Two days later, the customer’s husband called to complain about missing shingles on the roof. My father (owner of the company) and I went back to the home to evaluate the situation and verified that the roof was in the same condition as it was prior to the tree removal. Matthews Tree Service takes great pride in offering the highest level of service to our customers. We have been in business for 39 years and look forward to serving the Triangle area for many more years to come! Sincerely, Nathan Matthews"

It went okay. They arrived about two hours late the first day but left by 6 p.m. They had cut all trees down and removed about fifty percent of the debris. The second day they removed the rest of the debris.

They were very fast, very efficient, cleaned up reasonably well but had very little concern for existing shrubs, landscaping, etc. Whether I would hire them again or not would depend on the job. If I weren't concerned about the surroundings I would certainly call on them.
