This was a bad experience from the start. I should have known there would be issues when I received the quote from the GC, Jeff, on company letterhead that was different from the company I contacted. You would think it would have been explained up front that his company folded and he started working with another company. I could write pages on this project but will instead summarize a few of the issues. During the project there were several issues including inattentiveness, poor project oversight, subpar sub-contractors, poor communication and workmanship that was poor. Several times during the project I had to alert the GC to problems or issues such as when the porch columns were installed off center. He was inattentive and aloof to say the least. One example was that I provided the exact product code for the lattice I wanted and he came back with something different. I never bothered to mention it because at that point, I had already determined this project was in trouble. Very little oversight to the sub-contractors. A couple of them damaged my home and/or property. Roof installer cut several chunks of wood out of my house during the roof installation. Another lazy contractor dumped concrete in the middle of my yard and took off. The framing contractor made structural changes to the framing and ignored the architect's drawing without consulting the GC or myself. When I was made aware of this, the changes were already done. While I did not have a problem aesthetically with the changes (not like I had much choice since they were already altered), I did not realize later that these changes would cause other deficiencies in the structure. Lastly, not even sure the architect knew what he was doing because based upon the drawings, there were no room for any type of overhang. We eventually had to part ways before the project was completed when the final straw was some more shoddy workmanship on the trim work. I had two other contractors inspect it, and neither one of them stated they would allow it to remain on their project. Expressed my concern to both the GC and the owner of the company and did not receive much feedback. It was decided that we should part ways which was the appropriate decision. Was just a bad overall experience from the get go and if I had it to do all over again, would not have hired someone that eventually moved his business under the umbrella of a company that constructed new homes. Renovations were not their specialty and I think their primary overall concern is the new home business. I also think that my project was on the small side, and just not a priority. I eventually completed the project by retaining my own sub-contractors. At some point, I will have to start over and remove much of the framing but it will have to make do for now.
