Some of Jeff Maurers work was excellent. It all depended on the subcontractors he used. The roofers did a good job installing the shingles and new plywood, but the waviness of the roof was not corrected (this was from the roof joists not being installed properly when the home was built originally). This was an issue I had raised with him before I signed a contract with him. When I asked about the continued waviness after the new roof was on, Jeff said that he thought architectural shingles would cosmetically correct the problem so it wouldn't be noticeable. He felt that replacing all the roof joists would have been too costly. But he never asked me. To correct the problem he installed an I-beam to support the joists and added more support by cross-bracing all the joists themselves. This was an additional cost to me. His plumbers rebuilt the existing 2 toilets, but unfortunately did not install the new fill valve correctly in one of the toilets and it overflowed so that water was running out from under my house to the street. It ruined the tile floor, sub floor and insulation below the bathroom in the crawl space. Plus the crawl space had to be dried out and insulation replaced. I purchased 2 new toilets and had them installed, something that I'd hoped to do at a later date. The sub-contractor that installed the hardwood floor did not do his best work. The staining of the floor is inferior and what I had asked to be done as far as color was not done. He also left a visible area at the end of the room where he stained then pulled his brush back. One half of the floor is cupping, the other side is fine. I have 2 places where boards need to be replaced. My dining table wobbles and has to be braced to remain level. The sub refuses to come back and repair or redo his work without payment. Jeff said he would make it right, but he has not. Kitchen and Bath Galleries did a fantastic job on installing the cabinets and the granite counter tops are well done. Jeff did the back splash tiling himself and it is beautiful. His electrician installed new outlets and overhead lighting and the painting of the kitchen and ceilings is first rate. I can't help but wonder if it is because I am a women and was new to remodeling that things happened the way they did. I often felt that he really didn't listen to me and just went ahead and did things.
Description of Work: Major home remodel of a neglected 35 year old home. Demoed an area to the studs and built a kitchen, put in a hardwood floor there, opened doorways, took out a front closet and redesigned the space, replaced the rotted sub-floor in home, new roof (and plywood), replaced roof ridge beam, painted kitchen and popcorn ceilings.

Jeff Maurer of J4 Design and Build did a great job of managing this big project and I would highly recommend him. Jeff was on site almost every day of the project and was very responsive to my calls, texts, and emails when he was not there or after hours. This good communication is vital to a project of this length as many issues come up and need to be addressed quickly to keep things moving. Jeff is also very down to earth and fun to work with. When you have someone coming to your house almost every day for 6 weeks, you want someone that is easy going and personable. We had some issues come up, as you always do with big projects, such as mold behind the drywall, rotten subfloor boards, plumbing issues, etc. These were all addressed by Jeff and fairly priced if they extended outside the scope of normal work. One other thing to mention is that for each task, Jeff was not happy until I was happy. I am pretty detailed and if I was not happy with something, Jeff worked on it until I was. Instead of just checking things off, he would make sure we were happy first, which is great. If you are looking for someone to own and manage your project, Jeff is your guy.
Description of Work: Complete tear down of existing kitchen cabinets, counter tops, and flooring. J4 managed the complete kitchen rebuild except for installation of the new cabinets and counter tops.

This review is a bit overdue. I can?t thank Jeff and his team enough for the work he has completed in my home. I have a townhouse, a modest budget and a laundry list of items that need to be fixed and/or renovated. Although he has worked on several items around my home such as drywall repair, trim and paint, I can?t thank him enough for my new master bathroom. He took a small closet like space and converted in to a mini spa. I?m thrilled with the results! Who thought such a small space could feel so luxurious! Through every project, Jeff has been attentive and extremely communicative. He is my ?go to guy? for everything house related.

J4 Design and Build (Jeff Maurer, co-owner) was among the low bidders for this project. Price was a factor in our selection of them, but equally important was their communication responsiveness. E-mail responsiveness was excellent, and throughout the project, which lasted about 6 weeks, evening e-mails by us were addressed either by return e-mail or by phone call, or both, by the next morning. Most of the work was done by one subcontractor (Oscar Linares Construction), and the work was of outstanding quality. The electrical work was done by Quick Electric, and that work did not go as well as everything else (required multiple trips for this small job). The only complaint I had about this company was that some work was done before a change order specifying its cost was agreed to and signed. We were able to resolve this issue with the contractor to our mutual satisfaction.
Description of Work: The contractor replaced siding on two sides of house with Hardiplank and painted the new siding, replaced 17 windows, screened-in and added cedar shake roof with skylights to our small (14' x 14') deck, and added another small step-down deck. The contractor also constructed a small overhead cover for the back entrance to our garage, and replaced the back door here. Exterior outlets were installed for lights, a ceiling fan was hung in the screen porch, and three new lights were installed, including two by the newly constructed back entrance to the garage. New gutters were placed around the entire house.
