The first Tech that took care of our home sprayed mainly the inside, sometimes the outside outside of the home, and occasionally went into our crawl space to treat. He set a few traps for mice, and generally kept things under control for the first year we were clients of Dodson Pest Control. Once or twice we experienced critters in the kitchen, laundry, or bathrooms, and he took care of the problem and offered good advice for the minor problems we were experiencing at the time. During this time we felt like we were getting what we expected from a company like Dodson since we had no major issues with ants or other pests. The next year we were with Dodson, we experienced a moderate and persistent problem with ants inside the home. We rarely contacted the local Dodson office, and the few times we called during that season to indicate that the problem wasn't going away, an unfriendly woman in the Raleigh office contacted our Tech to come back out. Each time the Tech came out, the problem would worsen after his visit, rather than improve. The office staff was so unfriendly that my wife felt like she was treated like she should never call the office. Eventually I called the corporate offices in Virginia to see if something could be done about the ant problem. Finally after speaking to a VP in corporate of this 5-state company, they sent out a regional troubleshooter that inspected the property and ordered a dose of chemical around the perimeter of the home, exactly what we had been requesting the local office to do for months! I was told that our tech had been treating with the wrong or ineffective chemical for months or longer by the regional rep. Tech number one was seen one or two times after this event, then was never heard from again. Dodson assigned a second technician to our account that was a young and friendly fella. From the very beginning he focused almost entirely on spraying a strong smelling spray in various areas inside our home. I don't recall him ever opening the access door to the crawl space and even peeking in under the first floor, nor would he spray the outside perimeter of our home despite regular encouragement from me to do both. Tech two was markedly less successful in keeping our home free from unwanted pests and critters than the first gentleman. We were only ant free for two or three months a year during his service, and developed the kind of problem with ants that nobody under the care of a professional company should ever experience. I spoke to our Tech two four times about how we should handle our termite contract. We agreed since our home is approximately 9 or 10 years old, it might be a good idea for a re-treatment or booster application to be done in our crawl space, garage, and foundation perimeter. He agreed to arrange for the right party to contact me from his office for this additional service. The forth time in four months I spoke to him about it, he handed me his cell phone and put me on the phone with the termite inspector. The termite guy said he'd call me in a few days and set up an appointment to come out to inspect the property and provide our options to bring our termite treatment up to date. Four weeks later, no call from Mr. Termite, and we had ants crawling on us in our family room, in every bath, shower, or laundry area, and traveling in thick trails across our driveway to and from our neighbor's home. We spoke to madam personality at the office three or four times and she explained she'd get in touch with our tech. Of course our tech didn't want to treat the perimeter of our home with with an adequate amount of product, if any, and didn't believe in checking or treating the crawl space. Once again I called the corporate office in Va, and spoke to a very nice and friendly gal. She indicated she'd get in touch with the office and get something done for us. Sure enough a few hours after I spoke to her, the local office manager called me and apologized for the lack of initiative of the termite inspector and ineffectiveness of the treatment in our home. Shortly thereafter, Mr. Termite called and set up an appointment to come out on Friday of the same week. The manager arranged for a truck to show up and spray some powerful chemical around the perimeter of the home the next day or so. On Friday of that week mid morning I got a call from the termite man saying that he was shopping and would be an hour or two late for his mid day appointment. He finally showed up 2 1/2 hours late, and spent an hour or so looking around the house and speaking to me. He promised to get me a plan of action and associated quotation within a few days. I have yet to hear back from this individual three weeks hence. The treatment that Dodson did on the perimeter of our home seemed to have a beneficial impact a few days later. The problem was reduced from serious to moderate within a few days, but had not eliminated the problem two weeks later. We began speaking to competing companies about this time, and had a couple of them come out to our home. By coincidence the company that had our original termite contract came out to do their annual inspection, and was nice enough to point out several places in our crawl space where trails of ants were having a ball running back and forth between rooms of our home via the wires under the floor. He showed me how the ants wouldn't and couldn't exit the foundation because of the chemical barrier Dodson had sprayed, so thousands of them were trapped under and in our home. He explained that both the perimeter and crawl space should have been treated simultaneously to resolve to problem properly. I didn't realize until this time that the inspection company that took care of our termite plan also provided the same service that we had hired Dodson to provide for us. They will be our new termite and pest control service, and are favorably listed on Angie's List. We're crossing our fingers that they will be as good as their rating and reviews. I contacted an Operations Vice President at the Dodson head office that day and explained the many reasons why they would be losing our business. I requested most or all of the current year's money back and a reasonable explanation why we couldn't get advice about termites when it says Dodson is a leader in termite control in all the literature we receive from them and on the company web site. He agreed that we should receive a refund of some kind and referred the issue to a regional manager, who has not followed up on his agreement to provide a refund check within a few days. We are delighted to have nothing to do with this company from this point forward, and will make sure those that we care about in this area use a company other that this one. .
