PERMITTING ISSUES: On October 14th, I sent Jason a text
message asking when the job site would be cleaned up and when the job would be
permitted. He tried to suggest that
there was an issue with the permit – because I pulled it, not him. It took 5-6
text messages back and forth to get Jason to understand the Town of Cary issued
me the permit based on the project description. He continued to suggest it was
incorrect – then went so far as to say that he ‘took care of it’ by suggesting
he paid additional funds for an electrical permit – since I was out of town. I
immediately called the Town of Cary permit office that confirmed Jason Mullins
did not pay any additional funds for the permit and that I was in fact issued
the correct permit. On October 15th,
Jason sent me a text letting me know the inspection was scheduled for the
following day, Wednesday October 16th. Jason knew I was out of town
on business in California that week; but insisted on texting me around 8am EST,
which is 5am local time. On Thursday, October 17th he sent me a text
stating the inspector didn’t inspect the crawlspace because no one was home;
yet the Town of Cary told me I didn’t need to be there. Jason said he would
handle the coordination of the inspection on October 17th. The
morning of October 18th, I got a voicemail from the Town of Cary
Electrical inspector stating that the paperwork he was looking at was
incorrect. The application listed a 1000 SF crawlspace but he said there was no
way our crawlspace fit that description; he also suggested if we were paying
based on SF that the numbers could be off.
I sent Jason a text message and explained this; to which he blamed me
and suggested this was another issue from… you guessed it – me pulling my own
permit! Thankfully, we were able to get
that quickly resolved with the Town of Cary within 24 hours.
MORE ISSUES: On Monday, October 21st Jason sent me a text message
explaining that the permit for my crawlspace would not be issued. The reason
was that the ground on the one side of my house was too high; something that
would and should have been noticeable and evident during our August
walk-through and estimate. Jason offered to correct this issue by installing a
$200 foundation vent. I explained to
Jason that I felt like he was upselling me: first with the permits, then with
the sump pump, and now with this vent. He replied that he wanted to meet us in
person to explain our options and go over them; I offered to have him meet with
my husband as I was still out of town on business but we couldn’t match up
their two work schedules. When my
husband came home; we called Jason to speak with him but left him a message
instead. On October 25th I sent Jason a
text message asking if they would install the vent for $100. His $200 price
explanation included labor charges of unearthing dirt that had already been dug
up – he agreed and said it’s a deal. We planned to have the vent installed the
following Monday. I told him I would cut
him his check for the crawlspace and additional $100 once the job site was
cleaned up and the permit was approved, which caused an issue. Jason wanted to
hold the warranty until I paid in full; but I made it clear that the warranty
was included with the job so I’d pay for the job in full when I got everything
promised to me in full. Jason became argumentative and combative even via text
message; demanding and threatening me if I didn’t pay in full by October 30th,
his exact words ‘not a threat at all, more of a promise’. The situation became
so aggressive that I contacted the Wake County government and a lawyer who
instructed me to keep all the emails, text messages, and phone conversation
records for my protection and future needs and assured me I would be protected
both financially and physically from Jason. My husband decided to get involved
and called Jason on Monday, October 28th. During this conversation, Jason told
my husband that he was charging me for the vent cover because I was so
‘difficult’ that he would have normally done it for free but out of principle
wanted to stick me with as big of a bill as he could for his ‘trouble’ and
‘headaches’. Aside from that, the two
came to an understanding - Jason would email me to apologize for his words and
behavior and would refrain from threatening and being aggressive with me; and
in turn I would pay for the job in full upon clean up and inspection. Jason did email an apology later that day, as
he told my husband he would.
HOW IT ENDED: We scheduled the final inspection for Tuesday,
October 29th and met with Jason on Wednesday, October 30th. Crawlspace Basement and Technologies did
clean up our job site and we did eventually pass inspection. Jason did provide
us with our warranty at the same time I paid in full; and yes, he did charge
the extra $100 for the foundation vent. We parted ways and there has been zero
contact/communication since.
OVERALL: My initial experience couldn’t have been more
different from my actual interactions with Jason Mullins or Crawlspace Basement
and Technologies. I’ve never met a business owner who speaks to customers in such
a rude and aggressive way, especially women. Although we did get the work that
was promised, it was definitely not a simple 1-day project, which it was sold
as. Had Jason have been kind, reasonable, or professional we would have been
thrilled to recommend his work and company to others. However based on the
treatment I received and the experience I had, I can’t in good conscience
recommend that anyone work with this company.
Looking back, I wish we selected either Dennis C*** of Healthy Home
Restoration (Crawl Space Division) or Nathan Rider of Peak Energy.
"We are surprised by this review and its content. This was a young couple that we tried to be flexible with and we tried to help them out. All work was completed with professionalism and on time.
We interviewed 3 companies and picked the best one!
Thanks again Crawl Space and Basement Technologies!
We encountered a very minor issue when one of our water lines was broken when the removal of the existing insulation. I was extremely pleased that Jason's team took prompt and effective action to prevent any damage, arranged for an emergency plumber to fix the line, and did the clean-up (all within about a 3 hour period). I provide this as a compliment as there is often complications with work performed and having a competent crew to deal with issues as they arise is extremely important. The only delay we encountered was with the county permit process that was outside of Jason's control. Even though he incurred some unexpected expenses with the permit process he did not propose any type of increase to the quoted price. I'm extremely pleased with the work and believe this will add energy efficiency, improve the air quality in our home, and minimize pest and future maintenance issues.
Jeff and Jason both made some claims regarding the benefits of crawlspace sealing that some in the industry make, but which I could not find substantiated in independent research finding on the subject. It didn't matter because I understood that there is often a difference of opinion and I wasn't making my decision to proceed on the basis of any claims made. Sales folks are sales folks, so you need to be sure you understand what you are buying.
Once the work was scheduled it went smoothly. The installation/work crew arrived on time and proceeded as described. The work was done very well and all debris was completely removed. I could not ask for better quality of work. Jeff stopped by to inquire twice during the couple of days of work to see if we were pleased and to check on the job. The job was done and the inspections passed without any problem or issues.
About one month after the work was completed during a routine visit to service our HVAC system for the summer season our contractor commented that he was really impressed with the quality of the work done in sealing our crawlspace. He had previously recommended that we consider having it done due to the condensation he saw in the summer in the crawlspace. He did say that he thought the duct setting on the HVAC line that was done to send some conditioned air into the crawlspace was set a little too high a volume.
I called Jeff and he said he thought the setting was correct, but that he would come and check it for us. He came the same day and after inspecting it confirmed that it was set a little too high and that he adjusted it to the correct volume. He apologized for the mistake and checked the ventilation fan (from the crawlspace to the exterior through the foundation) and the rest of the job while he was here to just be sure nothing else was forgotten or not 100% as it should be.
Using a remote hygrometer I installed I can see that sealing our crawlspace has lowered the humidity in the crawlspace by about 15 to 20% with some seasonal variation of course.
