Since Clay's was 21 days out for lead time on service (that seems like a lot!) I did the work myself and it went very easily thanks to Charles' input. I appreciate the time that he took to respond and answer my questions fully. I've bought a few items at Clay's recently (although I did not buy the mower from them) and they seem to be a great company to deal with!
In about 12 days, I called and they told me it would be ready on that day (a Wednesday). I stopped be around lunch and was told that they were not quite done and asked if I could come by that afternoon. This wasn't a big deal to me, but it was a bit inconvenient. So, I showed up at 4:30 that afternoon and was informed that they were going to have to order additional parts and now needed to replace a carb on the saw. The estimate was another 3-5 business days. After 5 business days I had not heard anything so on the 6th day I called. Was told it would be ready. I stopped by and picked it up and the the saw was running great. I had asked them to sharpen the chain and this was not done upon pickup, but they did that while I waited and it only took about 5 - 10 mins.
Overall, I felt that the repair shop at Clay's had good techs working, but I would suggest that the administrative side of things could be handled a little better. The person I worked with (I believe his name was Dean) was very cordial, and was good at explaining how they approach repairs, but the overall experience was a bit disappointing mainly because of the issues with timeliness/schedule. Again, I suspect that most any shop would take a few weeks (not sure why.. .but that seems to be how things work in this business??) but this particular job took longer than I really expected.
Regarding price - I rated the provider a B in this area because it just seemed like a lot of $$ to get a chainsaw repaired. Perhaps this is totally normal pricing and truthfully, MOST of the price was due to parts. I checked online and it seems that you cannot readily buy Stihl parts unless you are a dealer. The LABOR rate was reasonable - 30 mins @ $85/hr. The parts were very price though - roughly $88 with about 70% of that going to the carb and a rubber elbow joint. I don't think that Clay's had any substantial markup on these parts, but I still have a hard time rating this higher than a B ('good').
Overall I have to say that I would do business with Clay's again mainly because I felt that their people were honest and wanted to make sure the job was done properly. The saw is definitely running well now, and in the end I feel that is what counts. I felt comfortable interacting with the shop personnel and that also counts for a lot. I just probably be a little more questioning on the whole schedule aspect of the job next time!
