Coogan's Design-Build

We hired Coogan’s Landscape Design for a total renovation of our backyard. Our backyard was not very functional and was never used. Tom Coogan and his team created a backyard paradise, building a covered porch with an outdoor kitchen, a swimming pool with a waterfall and hot tub, a stone fireplace, and a complete re-landscape of our backyard. We hired Tom because of his integrity, honesty, and the top quality of his work. Coogan and his team did an outstanding job and truly created the backyard of our dreams. We could not be more pleased.

We hired Coogan's Landscape to add some flair to our very basic yard. After consulting with us, their designer, John, drew up plans and made suggestions based on what we wanted. The resulting effect was perfect. The plan consisted of bushes around the base of the house, several trees and some flowers. We had initially wanted larger, more mature trees. John informed us that planting  younger trees would be much more economical and that within a few years they would grow to match our expectations. He was absolutely correct and kept us from spending much more money than was necessary. 

I will DEFINITELY recommend Coogan's Landscape Design to friends and family. Everyone I spoke with was courteous and professional. Great job and thank you!

I hired this firm to do an overall design for our property with plans to have it installed over phases with the first phase or happen asap. I started working with the designer in August 2015 with a 2-3 week timeline quoted on a design. Although I really liked the design, it was months(Oct) and then I missed their window for installing in the fall. I asked for a quote on a portion of the landscaping and found the quote to be superficial, lacking any detail to make a determination on their plans. Needless to say , I went and quoted 2 other firms.  I had initially thought Coogan's pricing was reasonable but the found the others to be reasonably detailed and 1/2 to 1/3 the price Coogan quoted. I guess they did not want my business.  Too bad because they lost a repeat customer and have already NOT recommended them to people who have asked. 

This is a follow up to my review written on August 29, 2015

After this review posted on Saturday August 29th, I received a phone call from Coogan?s owner, Tom Coogan, the very next day on Sunday. Tom wanted to personally see and hear from me exactly what was wrong with the work they had performed. After visiting our house on Sunday, Tom personally supervised a crew that began making fixes to the drainage on Monday. While Coogan?s, was obligated to rework the drainage, I was extremely pleased and somewhat humbled that Tom offered to replace several shrubs that were slightly damaged by the brutal summer we had here in Charlotte. Most of them looked fine to us, but Tom offered to replace with some newer healthier looking ones. Tom also added an additional arborvitae just because he thought it would look good in an open spot we had....and it did! Tom emphasized to me how disappointed and shocked he was that we had such a bad experience with his Company. He also communicated that had he known about our experience prior to my review he would have corrected this issue long ago. While a part of the blame in the communication gap could fall on me, Tom took full responsibility for what happened as customer satisfaction is preached daily at Coogan?s as their  #1 goal. There were also a few internal changes made to ensure no customers going forward have an experience like ours.  

Knowing that Coogan?s has an owner like Tom that values customer satisfaction, has changed my view of this company. I would now recommend Coogan?s to any of my friends with great confidence and will not hesitate to use them again for my landscaping needs. You can now add me to the long list of satisfied Coogan?s customers

Tom and his team were patient with us through the design process as it took several iterations to get the plan to work within our desires/budget. They did have to hire subcontractors that did not get things right the first time. For instance, travertine tiles not level, pool deck stain needed more coats than expected, and fence reconstructed incorrectly. But Brandon handled our issues promptly and ensured they were addressed to our satisfaction. They also helped us at the last minute with sod installation. Our lawn company underestimated the amount of sod needed but Brandon was able to find some excess to augment. The only downside, there were days that would pass and no work was being done. We were told it would take 4-6 weeks to complete the project but ended up taking about 11 weeks. That said, we had a critical date to complete the project and they were able to get the work done prior to that date. We are really enjoying our pool deck, patio, outdoor kitchen, and fire pit. Getting lots of compliments!

The project started on the exact agreed upon date. All of the crews were very respectful and professional. Whenever I had a questions or concerns they were addressed promptly. John Lashley, project manager was excellent. I wanted a serene backyard resembling a small courtyard in the South. Coogan's made that wish come true. The price quoted was exactly what I paid. I highly recommend them.

Being new to Charlotte, we used Angie's List to find Coogan's and we were not disappointed. Tom met with us several times to make sure the design was exactly what we wanted; and then he put us on the schedule. Due to the demand for their services, we had to wait a few weeks before work started -- but once it did, we felt as if we were the only clients he had. The workers were professional, efficient, and finished in a timely manner.
Since the work was done in 2012, I meant to write this review a long time ago but got distracted. However, their prompt attention to a lighting issue we had (2 years later!), was the impetus to write the review right now. I would most definitely use them again.

It was a great experience and great service. He was the only landscaper that showed up on time, delivered the proposal when he said, and returned my calls within a reasonable time.

We had several quotes but the professionalism of Tom and Marshall won us over. Once we got the clearance from our association, Coogan's was able to complete the project in time for 13 year old's birthday party. Quality of work was excellent, we especially pleased with the outcome of the patio and lanscaping work. Also, the responsiveness for minor tweaks to the plan and minor issues after work was complete was excellent. On the negative side the costs for non-landscaping items like lighting and irrigation seem a bit on the expensive side. Overall the project met timing and budget and we are very happy with the final product. Our backyard is popular place for neighbors, friends and family to hang out in. Definitely have no regrets.

We added a garage addition to the house. Due to property setbacks and other constraints the orientation of the garage was such that it projected from one side in the front of the house. The logical way of bringing the looks together seemed to add a courtyard and landscaping. We spoke with several landscape desingers but Coogan's approach to the design seemed to me to be the best fit. They invited us down to their offices that are surrounded with several different landscaped areas. My wife really enjoyed getting a look at the coordination of the different hardscapes and vegetation. After walking around the grounds for a bit, we sat down in the conference room to review the drawing and found that Marshall's design was 95% or more of what we wanted. We discussed some minor refinements and Marshall finished the drawing and sent it to us. It really could not have been a more pleasant experience.

The quality of their displays and their design was quite good.

Tom thought the amount of ground lighting that we asked for would have the back yard looking like an airport landing strip at night. He proposed less lights spaced further apart. The resulting effect was perfect. He also planted many bushes, three trees and some flowers. We had initially wanted larger, more mature trees. Tom informed us that planting younger trees would be much more economical and that within a few years they would grow to match our expectations. Just this month we found out that we needed to have a backflow preventer attached to our sprinkler system to comply with city coding laws. I called Tom to find out if he'd put in such a device and, within one day, he was in our yard trying to locate it. After ten years, he could not remember where he'd placed it, but was sure he would not have installed the sprinkler system without one. He thought it was buried underground but, instead of tearing up our entire yard to locate it, he offered to install another one at no cost. Within one week the backflow prevention was buried in our yard, inspected and approved. This issue had caused us confusion and concern and Tom was the only one who took the time to explain everything to us and answer all of our questions (unlike another landscaper we'd used).

From now on we will only be using Tom Coogan's services for all of our landscaping and lawn needs. I cannot imagine how many businesses would, in essence, guarantee their work even after ten years time. I can see why he has been in business in Charlotte for thirty years. His prices are not the lowest, but a subsequent bad experience with another local landscaper in the recent past has us wishing that we'd stuck with Coogan instead of trying to save a few dollars.

This experience was excellent in every way. All trees and shrubs have survived the last two months dry spell. Work done was extrensive, but reasonably priced. Mr. Coogan offered input that saved us money and problems. He knows his stuff!
