My husband and I hired Richard and his assistant to enclose our back porch and tile the porch and the adjourning breakfast nook on May 11, 2020. Richard charges $95/hour for both himself and his assistant, $45/hour for him or his assistant alone. We were to front him $5000 to get started and periodically cut checks as funds were depleted. I figured having 2 people on the job would have the work done quickly. Not the case. Two weeks in, he had to take a week and a half off due to a personal matter. Later, he let slip that he was repairing a skylight for another client. Upon his return, discovered I was being charged a full eight-hour day at $95/day for both him and his assistant. Again, not the case. Richard typically worked 2-3 hours a day or less, leaving his assistant to finish out the day. They both took an hour or more or off-site lunches on my dime and consistently left before completing a full 8-hour day. By the time I compared my tally of hours work spent and compared it to his, I had been overcharged for labor by $1000. When he asked for a fourth $5000 check, I showed him my tally of his hours, listed, what needed to be done to finish project and gave him a deadline of no more than 5 days for completion. He received a check for $2000 that Monday, July 13. He worked on Monday and Tuesday, quickly cleared out his equipment on Wednesday morning and left me a reimbursement check of $385 without completing the project. Upon contacting him, he said he would return if we cut him another check. Since we had already been overcharged by $1200, we did not respond to his offer. We are now contacting other contractors to finish the project. This contractor is dishonest and unprofessional. His work is fair to average – the Pella sliding glass door he spent an entire day installing does not close properly due to misalignment. I do not expect to get my money back, but I do consider myself fortunate that the amount we were overcharged was not higher. Do not use this contractor. He is dishonest and unprofessional.
