On this occasion, the cat was taken from my presence into a back room by a tech. I did not see what happened, but while the vet had her finger inside the cat's rectum, she bit the tech. I was told I would need to quarantine her for 10 days, which I agreed to do. What they didn't tell me was that an animal control officer from the city police would be visiting me to fill out a bite report and determine whether or not the cat could stay with me for quarantine. The tech did not show me her wound or tell me that she would be visiting a doctor for treatment!
I'm stunned. First, the tech obviously has no idea how to properly restrain an animal receiving this kind of exam and should not have been holding her. Second, all this was done out of my presence. I will never, ever allow a vet to examine an animal of mine out of my sight, again. This is the sweetest cat on the face of the earth!
The vet will respond that, and quot;it's the law,and quot; but they have her records and they know she has been properly vaccinated for everything under the sun. I would even have gladly gone to animal control and submitted a report, if they had informed me that it was required by law. To receive an unexpected visit from animal control is a shock.
As far as price is concerned, I've even been told by office staff that medicines are half as expensive (or less) if I have a prescription filled by a pharmacy. They don't even carry a full line of care products.
I will be looking for a new vet.
"In response to the above review, I would like to state that this client's pet was handled professionally as all of our patients are. Unfortunately, as anyone that works in the animal care knows field bites do occasionally occur. This can happen with any pet as they are out of their normal surroundings and being examined, treated, and around people they do not know. Any pet can respond differently in this situation then they normally would in their own home environment. As far as the assertion that the vet tech was under trained in restraint techniques; this is completely and utterly false. The vet tech in this case was a Registered Veterinary Technician, registered through the state of North Carolina and a person that successfully complete an accredited veterinary technician program. This program required the technician not only to complete this program but also to take state and national boards to become licensed. In addition, this particular technician has been employed with us for over 4 years and worked at another animal hospital previous to joining our staff. Finally, we did not report this bite to animal control. My technician went for medical treatment for the bite wound and in turn the medical facility she was treated at reported the bite in accordance with any state laws they are required to adhere to. Finally, I would like to state we are sorry this bite occurred but I will not allow my staff to be called incompetent when they are just doing their jobs. Obviously our hospital has nothing to gain by one of our employees being bit and neither does that specific employee. I will restate once again that anyone who works in the animal care field knows that bites occasionally occur despite the best restraint techniques. For our staff to be called incompetent for this is completely inappropriate and untrue. That statement that we do not carry a full line of products is also completely false as we do have a full line of products for all animals we treat. As far as prices go, yes we do at times willingly suggest our clients have something filled at a pharmacy rather than at our hospital because in certain cases human pharmacies can get the medication cheaper than we can. We feel this is a service to offer our clients another option for medications when appropriate Gary Practice Manager Craven Animal Hospital"
One one occasion a breed specific rescue group called for a reference and someone up front told them we didn't vaccinate our pets. Totally not true, though at the time we did have a very ill cat who was too sick for any shots at that time, per their own vet and in her chart. I guess they meant that one but wow, that was a really nasty referral they gave. It could have meant doggie death row had that rescue group not realized they were talking to a secretary and checked all my vet references.
We also had a pet on monthly medication required regular blood work.. and getting the med was such a hassle about half the time. The meds were for cardiac and thyroid conditions, not exactly controlled substances. and quot; You didn't do the blood workand quot;. Well, we had, or we had scheduled it but it wasn't due yet. I'm a nurse so believe me, I know how important the blood work is. The cat would have died without it.. .but they also did a grand job of managing what was a tricky medical condition.
But.... if I had a pet with a serious or unusual health concern... I would probably go there again. The vets are very good.. but also very, very expensive. I'd say they are the most expensive vet in this area that we have yet visited, and we do make the rounds.
So, if you have a complicated case, can afford it, and can stomach the occasionally very rude front office, I'd say go for it.
