Some specifics:
Hugh Gambrell's estimated price was "in the middle," between the highest and lowest bids. More importantly, he met his estimate as his completed-job charge. I had agreed to pay for the paint and materials separately, and he provided me his receipts, levying no surcharge for himself for such purchases.
Hugh worked with me to use a particular solid oil stain that I had specified for the cedar siding and the decks: It was the same Cabot stain originally used on the house 20 years ago; but, it was recently (2014) discontinued by Cabot, yet still available limited to local warehouse stocks Tinting machines are no longer calibrated for this type oil stain, so color matching required extra work. Hugh obtained a great color match of the two different paints used on the different components. All told, he had to obtain paint from three different retailers to complete the job!
Hugh and his son performed several attendant construction tasks to support the painting job: repaired/replaced some cedar shingle siding water damage on two "dog house" dormers on a 12:12 roof over the garage, repaired some wood rot damage on a basement door frame, patched some stucco flaws on walls and a chimney-top, and also installed a chimney cap I had previously purchased. All this work was done very well.
Hugh was quite personable and clearly wanted to do the work to my satisfaction. His crew was also invested in the job and worked well around my doing some DIY work on the decks which they painted.
My only less-than-totally-delighted element was that they rotated my house with some of their other painting jobs, working here only 1-3 days per week, rather than just knocking out the whole job at once. So the job took several weeks. Admittedly, this is pretty common practice for contractors. Frqankly, I had told Hugh I was not up against any time deadline, and I suspect he might have scheduled differently had I specified an earlier deadline. (So I had no real complaint about this...I'm just keeping this review real.)
Hugh's collaborativeness and obvious desire to do a quality job stood out. I would definitely use Gambrell Painting Service again.
They came in, moved the furniture, masked everything off covering everything in plastic sheeting. They took great pains to cover everything up. The job took a little over 4 hours to complete shooting the texture material and painting everything to match. After they were done they took the time to clean everything and put back the furniture. We could not have been happier with the quality of work and they are very personable people. I have seen many such repairs, but unless I point them out, you won't see these repairs. That's sort of the point, you can't see the repairs.
We would not hesitate to use them again, and might get them back again soon, my wife keeps finding things for them to do. If you need their services, call them. You will be glad you did.
