The electric, the plumbing, the insulation, and the fossil fuel permanent fire place were not up to code. In addition, no permits were pulled, and he had no license to put in the fireplace. He was told not to purchase this fireplace from Asheville, North Carolina at The Fire House; he was supposed to purchase it from Black Mountain, North Carolina. No licensed personell were used in this project. I contacted the building constructor of Mitchell County and filed a complaint with the North Carolina Board of General Contractors. I understand Mr. Gougeon already has another complaint on his record. After starting the work, I also realized that Mr. Gougeon was in Chapter 13. In addition, he built a carport in my front yard, whereas neighbors and friends teased me about putting an oversized toolshed up. More to the point, the use of rocks in particular areas, I would not have been able to walk to it due to being handicapped. And I seriously doubt I could have driven straight into it. No measuring was done.
I called an attorney and asked him to fire him. I caught one of his workers lying to me. Mr. Gougeon proceeded to go into a rage using the "F" word over and over again. I have found out that he was taken out by a deputy for the same thing in a county building.
I walked around in absolute shock for several weeks, according to friends and my attorney, terrified he would do it again. This entire project cost me $25,500, and to clean up the mess in the front yard, another $5,000. Also, the master suite will have to be brought up to code. That is another expense. I am an elderly, handicapped widow. I used my savings to do this. I would not suggest anyone hire him to even build a doghouse. If in doubt of this statement, contact the Mitchell County building inspectors office.
