Hal has done a number of projects for my husband and me in the OBX because we can always count on him to follow through. There are too many people in the field in this area who try to work without getting permits or work at their own snails pace around the fishing and surfing season. Hal is NOT one of them. Everything he does is by the book, fairly priced, and timely. It's very hard to find all 3 in a single person here so we consider ourselves VERY lucky to have found him and to have been able to make him a friend through our business adventures as non-resident property owners in the OBX.

Hal was extremely kind, helpful, and honest. He walked me through the quoting process and kept me informed throughout the entire construction. As out of town property owners it was very nice to not have to chase down our contractor for updates. We will definitely be going back to Hal for future needs.

Hal, the proprietor of Sanderling Construction, is everything you want in a contractor but don’t often find. He’s honest, kind, knowledgeable, communicative, fair, and trustworthy. Even with his decades of experience, he has a youthful energy. His crew is hardworking, respectful, and incredibly skilled. Hal Moore and his amazing Sanderling team transformed my old, crumbling oceanfront cottage into a fortified beautiful jewel that I never knew was hiding underneath the dangerously weathered structure and extremely dated interior!. From our very first conversation, I knew not only that Hal had the experience and savvy to preserve and improve the house, but also that I could trust him with a big project I'd have to manage from a distance. Neither of us imagined the ugly surprises that would be uncovered along the way, or the insane supply chain issues and subcontractor shortages that plagued the entire process. The team pulled off multiple miracles, found excellent solutions to SO many challenges...I'm convinced many builders would have been tempted to throw up their hands and walk away. But Hal had a vision of what was possible and he never gave up. I hoped for better protection from the elements and modest interior improvements. I got a virtually new house, inside and out, that surpasses my wildest imaginings and will I'm sure be a treasure not only to me, but to all who vacation there. The exterior is now maintenance-free, extremely solid and lovely; the inside is open, full of light, incredibly functional, cozy and comfortable, with lots of classic Carolina cottage charm. If you're so fortunate as to have Hal Moore consider your project, JUMP on the opportunity! You could not do better.

Wood Stairs and Railings Installation and Replacement
Started out with kitchen remodel, new flooring throughout the house and new shingles on one side of house. Added new doors and trim, new baseboards and window trim. Also had them get rid of popcorn ceilings. They did a fantastic job. The price was less than I anticipated. Hal and his crew are a good bunch to work with. Will definitely call them for future projects.

Hal was very responsive throughout the building planning, estimation and construction process. Hal communicated with us very well, in writing and during discussions. He was able to take our concepts and improve on them, making them better integrated to the existing house and more robust in the harsh OBX environment. He provided creative ideas for improving the end result including making up for some limitations in the orginal home construction. Permitting, construction and resulting certificate of occupancy processes all went very smoothly. We love the end products... a new rear deck with pergola and steps, a re-decked deck with new railings, a new fence surrounding the existing pool and integrated to the existing house, and a bathroom tub and surround rip-out and replacement, as well as other odd and ends.

From the first time Hal Moore came out to my cottage, he has listened to my job requests, responsive to calls, and extremely helpful working with me on design ideas for a beautiful screen porch, complete with a outdoor surfboard shower, new deck with wrap-around steps, and complete kitchen renovation. His workers pay attention to detail, and did a fantastic job! I highly recommend Sanderling Construction!

Addition to Existing Structure Building Service
Sanderling Construction is an outstanding company to work with for your construction or renovation needs. They did a great job adding a bonus room and bathroom to our beach house, and creating a wonderful enclosed outdoor living area. The Sanderling team does quality work at a fair and reasonable price. Hal is dependable, responsive, and a man of his word. When our room addition was complete with the exception of the mini split installation, I contacted Hal and told him we had family coming down for the weekend and could really use some heat in the room. When the regular installation guy wasn't available, Hal and a couple of his guys showed up on a cold Friday night and worked till midnight ensuring that the mini split was installed and we had the heat we needed. Job well done!!

Only hire people that live on Hatteras Island . Do not hire this company unless you are there everyday to make sure it is done correctly. Its no wonder Hal doesn't remember 2 years ago he never was there... its a good thing he had 2 workers that did our deck...they would be fools to stay with this contractor !!! Maybe he got better 2 years later for Betty & Fred !!

"No clue to who these people are. Have not worked in Avon doing deck work in over 3 years.?????I am just wondering if these good folks knew how to build a deck correctly, why did they not build this project themselves...I have no idea what this is about. And yes, the men that worked on this deck are still with me and actually did the deck project for the previous review. I lived on Hatteras Island for 20 years and built over 500 houses with triple this amount of remodels. I have learned over the 33 years I've been contracting, there will be people that you can not please no matter how well you do the job. There are over 90 reviews that gave my company excellent reviews."

Hal presented himself as an honest, Christian man. All of his contractors were polite and hard working. Not being present during most of the work was a challenge and yes, I would have done several things differently had I been present to make the suggestions. But all in all a great job was done by Hal's crew! It took way longer than we were told and way longer than we expected! But we finally have our gorgeous, sound sided, forever home with the million dollar view! Now that our house is finished, and we've been able to spend time there, we have found numerous things that are wrong and need to be corrected. Quality of work is not as it first appeared. Also I had referred Hal Moore/Sanderling Construction to a few of my neighbors. I have been extremely disappointed with how they were treated and taken advantage of. Very unprofessional!

"Yes, the project took longer than expected due to inclement weather over the winter along with several change orders by the client. Mind you that this was an extensive remodel which engineered plans were followed. All the punch list items were completed, All the comments I have seen on her facebook account where highly complimentary. I was referred to ONE potential client whom I met with. This client needed an elevator installed due to an illness in the family. My plan drawers, engineer, and myself put this client's needs to the forefront of our schedules but unfortunately, the project was halted by the client for personal reasons. I did not hear from the client until recently as he was out of town handling personal family business. Two weeks ago, I saw the client and he asked for the plan drawings which I provided to him. I did apologize to this client for being tardy in delivering the plans. Other than this, I was never unprofessional with him nor did I take advantage of him. I do not understand where this comment came from but every one is entitled to their own opinion. With 30 years experience in the construction industry, I have always tried to put the client's needs first. I write this rebuttal with no ill will in my heart but felt it should be written."

We had the unsightly plank removed on our 8 bedroom house. It had rusty nails bleeding through and the paint would always bubble up. It was replaced with new Plank with stainless steel nails and PVC trim. The end result was beautiful. Truly the house looks brand new. There were some hiccups along the way and just when you thought, "well, I'll never see this contractor again", he comes back to make things right. He is a man of his word. I would not hesitate to use him again.

Hal was patient with me when I asked a gazillion questions before and during the kitchen remodel project. We added some things and made a change here and there like hanging a new dining room light fixture, moving a cabinet upstairs instead of putting it back where it was and removing a double door from our sunroom. Hal took this in stride and coordinated everything including helping us decide on a new paint color to complement the new kitchen design. Our finished kitchen (floors, cabinets, countertops and new appliances) is absolutely beautiful. If you are in this area, my husband and I strongly recommend you call Hal at Sanderling Construction. You will not be disappointed!

Hal begged for our job after our home was severely damaged after Hurricane Matthew. Took him a month to find a "new crew," paid for motel rooms for workers without consent, failed to provide accurate invoices, cut corners on craftsmanship, exhibited inappropriate behavior/comments for budget management, and did not pay suppliers despite having funds upfront. We have had to hire an attorney to get back unaccounted for money.

Hal was very honest and took great care of our home. He wanted to make sure he exceeded our expectations. He always showed up on time (and we are not talking "island time"). He scheduled our work around family visits and finished the project right on schedule. He made sure our place was very clean once work was completed. We would hire Hal again for any future renovation work.

Hal fixed some hurricane Mathew damage on our house replacing lost siding, and we also had him replace 4 broken casement windows with double hungs. He was prompt, honest, and the price was right. The repairs are better than new. The siding looks great. The windows fit better than originals and the interior carpentry was superior. I plan to use him again for our next project in the spring, and I've recommended him to friends.

Met with us, gave estimate, crew did job, cleaned up every day and never hardly knew they were here. House looks amazing. And hopefully they will do another job in a few months. Reasonably priced- in line with three other bidders. Knew what I wanted because he listened. GREAT job, great crew!

Wood or Fiber Cement Siding Installation or Complete Replacement
This is the second time I've used Sanderling Construction, Inc. Hal Moore was great to work with putting on a new roof on my Salvo beach house so when it came time for some more work on the outside of the house I called Hal again and he just completed putting on some new siding, replacing some failed windows etc. He did a great job. I'll be using Sanderling Construction again this fall for some updating to the kitchen and bathrooms.
