About us
Brothers Tire Sales: Where the rubber meets the road Back when he started Brothers Tire Sales, Marvin Brothers had a 1955 Ford with overdrive, a good practical car for a man new to the tire business. A former Trailways driver, Brothers started the business in 1959 without any computers, cell phones or automotive diagnostic computers. The Kannapolis ompany now has all three, of course, but a few things are exactly the same. Grandsons Todd Haley and Brad Brothers say they still must pay close attention to inventory, their prices and a fierce dedication to honesty. “Treat your customer right. If it’s not broken, don’t fix it,” Haley says, with his 94-year-old grandfather and 30-year-old cousin nodding their heads in affirmation. The prices they quote include stems, mounting, balancing and taxes. Years ago, negotiating on tires was more common, nowadays customers go to the shop with the lowest prices. The business started with one bay, next to a furniture store. Then Brothers bought a beauty shop, a furniture store and the next thing you know, he had a 340-foot-long building with 10 bays, open six days a week. Business has been flat with the recession, with a lot more interest in used tires. Years ago, recapping tires was an option. Back then the company granted in-house credit to customers. There are a few of those accounts left, but they aren’t opening any new ones. “We knew everybody 10 years ago,” Brad Brothers says. What’s stayed the same: Like recession past, people are holding onto their cars longer. This time, they’re running on bald tires, rather than replacing them. What’s different: The addition of brake work, exhaust, oil changes and inspections rounds out the business so when tire sales are down, there’s something else to keep revenue flowing. Three-quarters of the business is built on tires; a quarter comes from service. Secret to getting along: “A loving and caring family. We’re tight, very close, we have our arguments, but a few minutes later it’s over,” Haley says. Additional Email - [email protected].
