Down East Heating & Air Conditioning Inc

About us

Since 1986 Down East Heating and Air Conditioning, Inc. has been providing area families and businesses with comfort solutions that fit not only their lifestyles, but also their budget. In 1986 Down East moved into an old oil company building that once was the home to Downy and Hurst Oil Company. As the Onslow County market continued to grow so did the staff at Down East. As the years went by, Down East became one of the fastest growing Bryant dealers in North and South Carolina. From 1986 to present, Down East ranks as one of the top 10 Bryant Heating and Cooling Dealers in the Carolina’s. In August 2007 Down east continued to serve area families and businesses and took a step of faith and opened a new location in the Wilmington, NC area. With this second location, Down East would be able to serve the comfort needs of people from the New Bern and Havelock areas down to the Leland, Bolivia and Shallotte area. Down East Heating and Air Conditioning was also named as the 2007 Bryant Carolina’s Dealer of the Year. In February 2011 Down East opened a guttering division. The guttering division of Down East installs seamless gutters both for residential and commercial.

Fine. Called to give notice prior to arriving. Courteous. Professional. No problem since. Technician understood the problem almost without me describing and fixed it. No nonsense.

I called to ask for an estimate and was told by the receptionist that she would give the info to someone who would call me back.  No call for 3 days, so I called again.  The next day employee Pat Futral called me.  At that time he said, "I see where you called a few days ago, but I missed it.  Sorry."  (What?)    Mr Futral came to my house the next day.  I was very satisfied with his understanding of my needs and his explanation of the work involved.  I asked for a ballpark estimate and he made a reasonable guess.  At that time, I was pretty sure I was going to go with Down East for this job.  I explained that my old heater was expected to go out at anytime.  Mr Futral understood this and told me he would work up an estimate and get back to me with the exact figures.  That was 2 weeks ago and I have not heard from ANYONE at Down East since.  During that time, my heater ceased functioning.  I called Humphrey Heating And Air for an estimate, got the estimate the same day and have scheduled the work.  If Down East can't find time to follow through and sell and install a unit, I'm betting I would have trouble getting them to come work on it under warranty.  Based on my personal experience, I do not recommend this company.

Response from Down East Heating & Air Conditioning Inc
"Hi [member name removed], I apologize for the delay in getting back with you. We did not get a notification of the email from Angie's List. However, I just noticed that we had a new, negative review so I logged in to see that we have disappointed you by never responding to your email. Rest assured we are never too busy to at least respond to a potential new customer and this is not our typical M.O. Please, again, accept my apology. I would also like you to know that I have forwarded your information to our guttering department and Raymond should be contacting you shortly. If there is anything further I can do for you, please don't hesitate to contact me directly at [email protected]. Thank you for considering our company and your understanding. Very quick to come by and quote me. Gentleman who did the quote was very professional and a good salesman.

After getting a quote from another competitor later that week and hearing they wouldn't beat downeast, I called to make an appointment for installation. The receptionist said that I would receive a call back to schedule installation.

No call, but the next day at lunch I received a call saying they would be at my home in 20 minutes. .... What?! .... Luckily I was able to drive home in time, and I honestly didn't mind the quick but unscheduled appointment.

2 guy showed up. I stood there as they unloaded their van, waiting to walk through the project, because I wanted to make sure they understood how the gutters should be angled for my rain barrels and how to install the diverter, as discussed with the person that did the quote. I suppose they thought I was just standing there because I like to watch because they continued to unload like I was not there until i asked if we were going to go over what was being installed. Then one guy said everything was on the sheet. Long story short, installation guys weren't the best communicators. If you want a walk through, tell them.

I could tell they were packing up, so I grabbed my check book and headed outside to check out the job and pay, but they were already gone. Another communication bump ... They will invoice you later, FYI. No big deal, just would have been smoother to know this stuff. I would have left the house and continued my errands if I knew they were not going to need me at the end. I guess I should have asked.

Gutters look great and they seem to be sturdy. They use large 3x4 downspouts and 5in aluminum gutters. The price was great, the other company that quoted me was baffled, and didn't even try to humor me with another bid.

So, to summarize, good price, quality seems good, but poor communication in the installation process (no real big deal though.) I'd recommend them, and I'd use them again!

Called the Down East in April 2012 for the new unit. Price was fair. Told them Unit needed to be installed before Memorial Day due to it being a summer vacation property and the first rental was scheduled for memorial day. They assured me it would be ordered and installed before May 15. Called on May 20 to make sure unit was installed and it had not been installed and they had no unit available to install. They apologized and did get a unit installed prior to the renter arriving, however the unit was not the brand I ordered or agreed to and there was no offer of a price break. In July, my second AC unit, which was under warranty with Down East stopped working. Called Down East for a repair call. They arrived two days later, much to my tenants frustration in 100 degree heat, and said the compressor needed to be replaced. This unit was replaced the year previous and that they needed to order the part through the company. This took at least two weeks to get the compressor. A week following the repair, the AC unit stopped working again. Called Down East out again, another couple of day delay occurred. They could not figure out what was wrong with the unit at this point. There was a leak from the unit occurring on an inside wall. This took countless return calls and visits from Down East technicians. Their solution was to reroute the drip line from the inside, and run a white plastic drip pipe from the third floor of my house along the dark brown roof line to the ground.  I have never seen a solution like this put into place. It now looks like a red neck repair job. The third time the AC unit stopped working, I called another AC company who came the same day and blew the drip line out and it has worked ever since. In the end they only charged me 75.00 for the service call but it is quite apparent that their technicians, while nice enough on site, do not have a clue about how to fix common AC issues and the company representatives installed what could be a sub-standard AC unit when I specifically paid for a higher end unit.

This is the third time I have used Down East for my rental property.  The last 2 times they charged my ac unit with no problems.  This time it took them 2 days to come out.  I received a phone call from the technician that he was enroute.  A few hours later I received a phone call from their office telling me I needed to pay for a service call.  I told her I would pay for the entire service once completed.   She told me that they changed their policy and I need to pay for the service call up front.  Since the technician was already on site, I told her I would pay for it all at once.  I also asked what was the diagnosis.  She indicated she didn't know and I would have to speak to the technician.  She then became very aggravated and impolite with me on the phone.  I asked to speak to her manager.  She said he was not on site and would have to call me back.  I asked her to have him call me to discuss the service.  I never received a call that day either from the manager or the technician.  I had to call the following morning to find out about the work.  When I called I spoke to the same lady and she immediately transferred me to the parts department.  Once I spoke to someone in the parts department, I found out what they needed to do.  Again, I asked to speak to the manager, who was not on site.    The estimate they gave me was $1000 for a AC coil.  I did not get any other information than that and never spoke to the technician or the manager.  I would mark them all F's but they have been out twice and adequately repaired the AC.  They are rude, discourteous and not customer service oriented.

Have two A/C units go down in my house. I sent in an internet request through their website for a phone call after describing my problems. Two weeks went by so I called them up and asked them to come out and fix my A/C units. They were punctual and on time, however after two hours, nothing was accomplished, the repair man put nitrogen in the line and found a leak and the other A/C needs new duct work. To this day they haven't been able to give me a price on the repairs, however, I paid $96 for nitrogen! Way overpriced  for finding a leak. They won't return any of my phone calls for repairs and when I call them up, they say the sales representative is away and will call me back so I still can't get any actual repairs done on them.

They’ve been very good.  I’ve actually used them twice.  They came in when they said that they were going to come in, completed what they said they were going to complete and told me how I could do it the next time.  I was real happy with them.  Their price was the best part as it was really good.  I would use them again in the future if need be.

We have a maintenance agreement with them and we have done some repairs in the past.  They have been good so far and have not paid them more than $200.  They have not installed the system for us, but have been maintaining the same for the last 12 years.  We have had only repairs done and they have been reasonable.  We will use them in future.

I had the same problem again after Down East Heating & Air Conditioning Inc tried to fix it. I did not like that they had to change one of the thermostat to put their name on it which cost me as I did not have insurance before. They gave me an estimate which was not even close to the actual cost. Initially when they tried to charge me I reminded them that I had warranty and then they said that they have to replace the thermostat.

A technician came while I was gone and he was hitting on my wife. He didn?t know what he was doing and he didn?t even install the thermostat we gave him; he stole one off his truck and we didn?t pay for it. He told my wife to give him a personal call so that he could come back and pick up the other thermostat. The guy is lucky that I wasn?t home. This guy works specifically on air conditioners and he admitted that he had no idea how to do the wiring for the thermostat. It was ridiculous. He got a thermostat out of his truck and installed it in our home; he expected my wife to go buy a new one as a replacement so he would have to come by and pick it up. We never called him back. I would invent a grade lower than an F for this guy's professionalism. We won't use this company ever again.
