They showed up exactly the week she had told me a couple of months before when I signed for the estimate. Tracy came out the morning of install and worked with me to make sure we were all on the same page with regard to the fenceline and the placement of the gates. I have a large Siberian Husky and I'm always wary of any gaps given their typical desire to escape any fence. Tracy and the lead installer (Isaiah - I think I'm remembering that correctly?) were great in helping me visualize some areas where there might be some gaps and worked with me to ensure I was comfortable with how it would be. I have a heavily sloped yard that is also a very irregular shape, so I'm sure it wasn't the easiest install, but they were super fast, and did an awesome job (i.e., when you look at the fenceline, the level is consistent and it looks entirely cohesive). At one point, I did realize one of the 'angles' they were getting ready to set posts on was outside of the line I needed to hold per my HOA approval and without question they made the change with the perfect customer service attitude.
I did get pricing from another place and it was very much comparable; so while I certainly would have liked to spend less, I have no reason to believe the quality of the product and certainly the customer service aspect warranted the price.
In the end, I LOVE the new fence!! (And my dog appreciates being able to hang out under the tree and watch the construction down the street :-).) Based on my experience, I would absolutely recommend Matthews Fence.
I used Matthews Fence to build a fence around my lot in 2005. At that time they were very slow to respond to my request for an estimate, but I did eventually get the estimate hire them for the job. The quality of the fence is average. I contacted them again in December 2013 to rebuild the gates in the fence, which are now sagging badly. I consider this normal wear and tear and not a problem with the original construction. I was told that someone would be out within a week and they would email me an estimate. After 4 weeks I had not gotten the estimate. I have since called 2 more times and not gotten a call back. Needless to say I will be contacting other companies to do the work.
"We are sorry that this customer feels our price was too high. We build a superior quality fence and that shows. We do not declare to be the cheapest or the most expensive, but we are the best."
The lady from Matthews Fence was the ONLY person to point out that the fence could be expanded in one area (compared to the existing fence) to give us more room in the yard while still staying within our property line. The expansion was only a minor cost increase. We liked how she thought and quot;outside the boxand quot;.
Of the three quotes we got, Matthews Fence was the high middle quote (near the highest). We used another company's quote to talk them down a little, but it definitely took some haggling compared to other companies I've worked with.
We tore down our old fence ourselves (to save money), and they were able to place the new post holes in places other than where the existing concrete was at. The workers arrived as scheduled and did the job quickly over 2 days. I watched as they worked, and they did a good job of measuring things and making sure the fence was level along the way. Each board was fitted individually. They had some difficult areas to work around, and the fence looks very good all along the way.
There is only one section on an inside corner of the fence that they pieced a little weird. It looks like maybe their measurement was off by about 6 inches. I wasn't so happy with that part. When I questioned the follow-up guy about it, he seemed to have a bit of an attitude about it, which kind of tainted our experience with them. But we were VERY happy with the look of everything else.
Within a month, we had a couple of boards warp and pop loose. Someone from the company somewhat grudgingly came and fixed them. Later we had another board that did the same thing, which we fixed ourselves so that we didn't have to deal with them again.
Overall we were very happy with their suggestions and their work. I've seen MANY fences that don't look as good as ours. The fence is now 5 years old and still solid and nice looking. I think as long as they do it right the first time around - so you don't have to deal with them afterwards - they're a good company to work with.
Where they went wrong was in follow through. I found that some of the picket sections were not level and they took several phone calls and two trips out here to figure out how to fox the level fences.
They never said we are sorry we will fix that, they never admitted the fence was installed wrong they just said we will be out to fix that. If it had only taken one call and they came out and fixed it that would have been a great experience.
BUT IT TOOK OVER 6 CALLS and 1 MONTH to get the simple picket issue somewhat resolved.
They also had a truck that leaked fuel on our drive way. They had a rug to catch it with but they did not catch it. When I told the owner about this he just investigated what the liquid was and never apologized for the fact that I had to clean up the fuel.
Also they did not ask me if I wanted them to spread the dirt along the fence. IF they had I would of said NO. Pick up the excess dirt dont make my dog come in with dirt on his feet.
So I had to clean up the diesel fuel, the dirt, I also had to fill in one hole that they forgot to backfill.
They need to slow down and acknowledge the customers concerns, address these concerns, and look like you care about how the customer feels about their quality of work!!!
"We are sorry the customer feels our crew was "too fast" on the installation. Due to the ease of installing aluminum fencing, the crews can normally do about 200' or a little more in one day. Our crews are trained on how deep to dig the holes and how much concrete is to go in each hole. We do leave room to spread some dirt on the top of each post's concrete so that grass can grow around the posts. Our normal practice is to always spread any remaining dirt both around the posts and on the ground surrounding the posts. This allows the dirt to become part of the yard again and prevents piles of dirt around each post. There was an issues with the aluminum fencing on this job. After looking at the issue after installation, the sections were off-level by a small amount. We contacted the manufacturer, since this was a defect in materials and they sent representatives out to change out any sections that were not level with the posts. We are sorry that this customer feels there was a delay in our response, but we were at the mercy of the manufacturer as they were intent on checking the materials themselves and replacing the defective sections. We do hope that the customer now realizes that there was indeed plenty of concrete in the posts and that they are truly happy with the finished product. Matthews Fence strives to provide a quality fence that will last quite a while and we feel that was done in this instance."
