We looked at two companies and both quoted about the same price. We decided to go with A Deck Above and would like to highlight the following: 1. They are local, located in Indian Trail and have been in business for over 30 years. It has been our experience that a local non-chain company will take more pride in their work and we prefer our money to stay as close to home as possible; everyone benefits. 2. The project was 100% turn key. They did everything; permits, site prep/demo, construction, and contracted out electrical, roofing, painting, and gutter work. The other company required the homeowner to be responsible for painting! 3. Jeff and Brett were the project managers. Jeff was responsible for the screen porch and Brett was in charge of the patio construction. Because the two projects were both in house, Brett and Jeff coordinated their phases so there was little down time. They even managed to have their outside contractors show up at the appropriate time. 4. Time of project, initial meeting was in July 2021, project completed March of 2022. Actual construction started last week of December. There was a lot of downtime due to weather, winter projects. As for Brett, Jeff and Daniel, Brett’s co-worker, these guys are really nice people and that goes for their crew too. Again, I think that has to do with the fact they are a local company. We were very impressed with the work ethic and punctuality of the A Deck Above crew and their subs. 5. Communication - You will read that a lot of people get frustrated with the lack of communication with their contractors. I communicated with Jeff primarily through email and with Brett through text messages and email. They promptly responded to all messages and email. As a matter of fact, I texted Brett while writing this review and he responded in 30 seconds! That pretty much answers communication response time. 6. Design and flexibility. The screen porch was 100% designed by Jeff and Chris, the master carpenter. It would be nice to see a sketch of the finished product beforehand, we never asked for one, but it was also a pleasant surprise to see what they came up with each day. We are extremely pleased with the final outcome of the porch. Chris is a master craftsman, everything was square and level, he takes great pride in his work and it shows. The patio was designed primarily between Brett and my wife. She knew what she wanted for a design and Brett and his crew made it happen. Brett was very helpful in picking out materials and making suggestions. We had a few cosmetic items that we wanted taken care of after the “check was cashed” and Brett and Daniel showed up within a day and had no qualms about addressing the concerns. The patio looks like a million dollars, we are ecstatic with the results. The gentleman that did the masonry work on our wall was also a craftsman, very nice work. 7. Final thoughts. This is a really great company to work with. I would not mind having any of these guys over for a beer and cookout. I think that says a lot about their character, they are really that good of a company. We are absolutely thrilled with the results. Would I recommend A deck Above to friends and family? Absolutely without hesitation. Price, well it was in line with the other company but you control how pricey the project gets. Our patio got more expensive because we made changes after the initial quote however Brett kept the increase pretty reasonable. You will not be disappointed with A Deck Above and their work.

Excellent experience all the way around! Everyone, from the owner of the company (Kurt), to the guys that built the deck, was knowledgeable and personable. They take GREAT pride in their work and their craftsmanship is second to none. After tearing down my old deck, they neatly stacked the wood in my driveway, to be picked up. No debris/trash left behind for me to clean up. Not. One. Single. Piece. It took 2 days to rebuild my deck. On day 2, after working 13 hours in the heat, I watched them carefully sand down the deck to leave a perfect finish, and even removing small pencil marks. "A Deck Above" is all about the details and ensuring a great customer experience.

Jeff was very responsive to my initial inquiry.  Initially asked to add on to the deck.  Jeff talked through the pros and cons of adding to it and doing a total new build.
It took a few days to get a quote, permit, and the build scheduled.
The works was completed in 3 days.  I was very impressed with how quickly it was down.

From the start, my phone calls were answered.  We got quote for a 12' by 15' deck complete with tearing the old deck down and hauling off the old wood.  We changed our minds and went with a 12' by 12' instead. We asked and received a new quote.  They had planned to come out the week of Thanksgiving, but we asked Kurt if they would wait until after Thanksgiving and they said yes.  Well then the rains came so it wasn't until after the first of the year before it was dry enough to do the work.

The 3 man crew came out on a Monday, 01/04/2016 and began the tear down. They were very professional and courteous.  By the middle of the day, they had the old deck down and the new one framed and ready for the first inspection. If I had a question about anything they would stop and answer it.

The inspector took about 2 more days before he could come out, but as soon as he was done my crew came back out and finished the deck.  The final inspection was done today.

We would absolutely use them again.  My deck came out better than could have imagened.

Jeff was very responsive initially for getting a quote and communication was solid during our planning - both via email and phone. There were some delays around the actual start date but construction occurred without any problem and was done quickly and with high levels of quality.
However, there was some additional work that we requested be done after the initial deck was completed (lattice around the base). Again, the initial quote was readily created but since then communication and coordination has been non-existent. We were anticipating getting the work done over the last two weeks and haven't heard back from anyone, despite multiple emails and voicemails.
Not sure what has changed but it seems like A Deck Above is over-extended and cannot meet it's commitments at the current pace. We appreciate the quality of the initial work but I am frustrated that the follow-up work will now need to be done by another vendor.

They showed up on time, had a full team take down the existing deck and built the new deck in a matter of two days.

I was amazed at the work ethic of the team.   They took care to make sure everything was done right and the result was beautiful and very usable immediately.

We're very happy with the result.

Kurt worked was incredibly patient and worked with us for a long time and through many iterations to find the right design to overcome a few of the tricky layout issues that our house presented.  When we finalized the design he and his crew (not sub-contractors) got to work.  Dennis (foreman) and his guys are incredible to have on site each day, very professional, personable and talked through all of the issues that typically come up when you actually build a custom design.  They always came up with great solutions that fit the overall aesthetic that we were aiming for.  I could not recommend these guys any more and will use them again for any project that we have.

Fantastic. The guys were punctual, completed the job on 3 days and did an outstanding job. The request I made was a little unusual since I wanted wider and less steep stairs so they designed the new stairs and they are fabulous.

These guys are awesome and I highly recommend them!

The work was done quickly and professionally. The crew was very polite and cleaned up after themselves.
The result met all of our expectations. The deck is now a much more usable part of our home.
We had a little problem with some of the wider pieces of the Trex material used to wrap the edge of the deck curling and pulling away at the edges from the edges of the deck. The guys at A Deck Above came out when we called and repaired the problem.
This issue had nothing to do with the way the product was installed, but was soley a material issue.

The deck is beautiful and just want we wanted.   It is large enough to accommodate lounge chair, two umbrellas, four chairs and potted plants.  Their website helped us decide the deck design with photos of work done by A Deck Above.
The black metal spindles on deck and stairs along with the angled corners really sets this deck above what we had at our other house.  The diagonal deck makes it look special.
Jeff was accommodating in building a front stair railing which is very sturdy and what we needed since there are three steps with nothing to hold on it as you climb up/down the stairs.
Crew came on time and each member knew what their job was so that they were very efficient.  Rain showers did slow up the completion of the deck.
Thanks for the great job!

We are so pleased with the quality and custom design of our deck. The crew had many challenges to face (bad soil, power lines, working with existing brick stairs), which delayed the project a little bit. In the end, I think all the design changes were for the best. The deck is beautiful and both the county and other contractors have commented on the quality of the contruction. Additionally, the crew spent the extra time to clean up their workspace and stack extra bricks.

Due to the fact that our deck was deteriorating before its time primarily because of poor workmanship from the original builder, we selected A Deck Above to rebuild it, add structural members, add footings when necessary and cover with composite boards.  Jeff Doerr was the salesman and point of contact.  Unfortunately the poor weather conditions this summer delayed the start of the project.  When we did get underway, the first order of business was to secure the deck from sinking by adding engineered footings.  This is the only part of the project that was somewhat difficult because the engineer used by A Deck Above was not timely in his appointments and assessments and, after he submitted the report, Jeff couldn't get those who were to install the piers to do so quickly.  This resulted in a delay of almost two to three months but Jeff did keep me abreast of the delays as they occurred.  Once building began in earnest, the project went well; the workmanship was excellent and the quality of the project is fantastic. We went with Evergrain Composite Decking boards, skirt and top rail and wood members elsewhere and after four months, it still looks great and feels solid.  We really couldn't?t be more pleased.

Jeff gave us a price that was right in line with two others and about $4000 less than Lowe's. They delivered the materials and were out the next day. The new deck is above what Meck County code asks for and I feel much better about spending time outside on the beautiful work. Many nuances and finishes on the railings and stairs. Once the old deck was gone he had four craftsman working to get the footers set and the main structure up. The last day was spent in the details of the trim - reminds me of a cabinet maker - definitely not a rough frame in.

Fantastic!  Kurt was extremely professional, friendly and provided good recommendations and alternatives to addressing concerns raised.  Quality of work was great.  We had approximately 10 solar post cap lights that stopped working shortly after installation. Kurt and his team immediately changed them out at no additional costs.  We also experienced some issues with the warranty claim with the railing manufacturer around shortage of parts needed for Kurt's team to finish the job.  They patiently waited several months for the materials to be delivered to our home and repeatedly returned and installed the new parts until the job was complete.
I wouldn't hesitate to use A Deck Above for future jobs.

Jeff was prompt and professional when he came to give an estimate for the job. He gave the lowest estimate of the three we sought. We were fortunate he was able to fit in our small job while waiting for several larger ones to proceed. Everything was completed quickly and on time. I would give an A minus to his worker for being a little sloppy on spacing the rails but we okayed it just to get it done. Overall we are pleased.

I had to schedule about four  times due to missed appointment on their end (several excuses about personal matters, which I understand but, they should be contacting me, not me contacting them.  I am the customer who is paying),  When they arrived, I described exactly what I needed done to my composite deck (railings replaced).  Due to a problem with the manufacturer's material, the replacement material is being provided FREE of cost.  I just need to find someone to do the work.  Deck Pro's appear to be more concerned with replacing the entire deck.  I told them a couple of things that I might want to have done optional, but, the main thing is the railings.  It took weeks for me to receive their estimate and the estimate that I received was for replacement of the deck (NOT what I NEEDED done).  When I phoned for an estimate for just the railings, it took another few weeks before I received that estimate.  Both to me were unreasonably high.  It appears that they do not want to be bothered with my business (at least that is the lasting feeling I have).  I am VERY busy and for me to do all the contacting for them to even come out to see what needs to be done and to  send me an estimate, was VERY POOR SERVICE at best.  I would not recommend this company or even attempt to deal with this company again.

We were incredibly happy with the quality of work this company provided.  We got quotes from 3 different companies (all of which were graded as A companies on Angie's list) and chose A Deck Above based on several factors.  Obviously their quality of work looked impressive, they had good reviews, but they were the only company who seemed to realize that the code had recently changed for deck railings.  They were actually the most expensive of the 3 companies, but we felt confident that we were going to get the best outcome from them.
We had an architect design the deck (we felt it was important to keep the designer separate from the builder) and then gave the plans to A Deck Above.  The crew showed up on time and were incredibly respectful.  Unfortunately, what was originally going to take a week to do ended up taking a month (which was not the A Deck Above's fault).  Once the old deck was removed, we found that there was a pretty substantial amount of rotten wood that needed to be replaced.  The crew from A Deck Above was willing to do it, but we preferred to have a company who specialized in replacing what was needed to take care of the job.   That set everything back over a week.  When they were ready to begin again, one of the workers accidently broke his hand while using one of the tools.  We had to wait for a new crew to become available.  The new crew was just as respectful and experts in their craft.  They could read the architects design plans without a problem and in the end we ended up with an incredibly sturdy, beautifully made deck!
I have recommended this company to many people and will continue to do so.  Everybody who has seen our deck is impressed, and we continue to be!

We had been discussing replacing our deck for 2 years.  Our son was graduating and this gave us the push to get it done in time for a party.  We contacted Kurt at A Deck Above who came out a couple of times to listen to our needs and provide us with ideas.  By the time we made our decision, it was 10 days until graduation.  Kurt assured us that he could get his team out and have the job complete within 7 days.
They came out on a Monday and we were standing on our new a beautiful deck by Wednesday evening!  They were professional, organized and cleaned the work-site each day before leaving, which impressed us.  We are very pleased with their work and attention to detail.  Our neighbors can't stop raving about how much they love what we did - we even had a new neighbor drop by to see it and request Kurt's contact information.
We would use them again in the future, they completely exceeded our expectations!
