The only thing we can say about the service is that they actually do show up. They may not do the work they are paid for, but they show up and pretend. I oversee my mom's bills for her, and in turn her service contracts. I'm not local to her, so I don't see the actual work. After paying for 8 months, my mom finally had enough and had me contact the service provider. While they will say that they showed up, did the services, and went above and beyond when they were issues, they are lying. The grass is full of weeds, they claim it is because she does not water. Prior to them taking over care of the lawn, it was never watered. Grass goes dormant if weeds aren't taking over. Now the weeds cover her lawn. They were contracted to weed and maintain the beds. You should see the "weed shrubs" she has now. ANd when I got involved, because they could not handle someone upset and frustrated, they instead cancelled my mom's contract stating she was in violation for not doing her part. They will give some line on hear in response that I was rude (yes, th
Overall they did a pretty good job, I think are main problem was with the landscape designer putting plants in the wrong places. Plants that needed shade were put in direct sun and plants that needed sun in shady places. Plants that would attack deer were place for them to feast on.
The previous owners had them do the pool patio and other landscaping that is beautiful and I'm sure what attacked us to buy this house. If you work closely with them I think they can do a good job but be firm about what you need and want.
After Derek left, subsequent work has been substandard. When we call about problems, the responding supervisor seems to minimize the problems or recommend that we take steps to address it (spray pesticides, adjust nozzles, apply systemic fungicides & pesticides) rather than Southscape doing what's necessary to fix the problems). We have had problems with a)irrigation coverage -- either excessive or inadequate in spots, b) drainage --drains get clogged with mulch , c) plant failure -- a few plants that Southscape installed are either not thriving or dying, and d) incorrect placement of drip nozzles resulting in death of our own shrubs. Even though I have asked Southscape to replace the failing plants that they installed, as per their 1 year warranty, I've been told that it is unlikely that they will do so.
"Irrigation Related: I (Steve Woofter) personally went through all drip lines to ensure that they had the proper emitter and placement on the plants, both existing and newly installed. At time of installation, all planting were verified by myself to have a proper emitter placed. A few adjustments have been made since install. 4-5 lawn irrigation heads were adjusted one time o make sure they had proper coverage…they were off by about 1 foot. 2 lawn Nozzles had to be replaced since they were not covering the entire area on 9/25/13. Admittedly these were not the correct nozzles and we replaced them at no charge. However, these affected the lawn area only and if fact the lawn was in good shape where they were not correct so no detrimental impact. Flooding: After receiving an email from the customer, I went to the property the following week to find that the irrigation was running daily and the zone times were set too high. Some zones running twice the recommend time. I made the time adjustments and cut the watering back to 3 days a week. This was the main cause for the flooding due to over watering, as well as the large amount of rain we have received this year. Drainage: This was due to the large amount of rain we have receive this year, that side of the yard has no irrigation to cause the drain to fill with mulch. This could be remedied by installing atrium grates to the catch basins which is an elevated rounded grate. Recommendations Made: Any recommendations made were for existing plant materials, as well as the turf, which was being maintained by a different company. As I gave a price to do any application, our price was too high. Customer was very hands on with her property, and I recommended products she could purchase at any local garden center and how to apply said product. I was on this job about every other day while this job was going. Running materials, helping out the crews as well as doing some of the work myself. Any time the customer would call, I would be there, even after the job was complete. I have done numerous walk around the property at initial installation in early spring as well as more recently with the customer to make sure that she was satisfied. It was only until recent that these issues have come up."
1) Did not start out by pressure checking the system which was at 100 psi. Replaced w valves only rated to 70 psi then seen confused as to why they were blowing immediately. Charged me for the blown valves at wrong rating.
2)Showed up at my house without confirming or making apt then surprised I was not home.
3) left job incomplete and threatened bill collection/liens.
4) Didn't check system when parts replaced to see if system worked when done requiring multiple calls and visits.
"The member called us on October 2, 2012 nearly 2 1/2 months after the initial irrigation repair visit (July 11, 2012) and only after we had begun collections procedures when attempts to contact him for overdue payments netted no results. At this time he stated that the system wasn’t working right and that the only reason he hadn’t contacted us sooner was because he didn’t want to “cause a fuss”. Thus, we were unaware that his irrigation system was not functioning properly. However, when we left the property from the original repair it was, in fact, working properly. We responded within a timely manner in each instance. Yes, once we showed up at his house unannounced and that was only because we had a tech in his exact neighborhood with a little extra time between. That is a very rare occurrence we tried to take advantage of. He wasn’t home so we called and scheduled an exact appointment with the member (Oct 1 @1pm) because he stated that he “wanted to be there to see the work completed first hand”. He wasn’t there for the Oct 1 appointment, thankfully his son was, and he was able to provide us access to the controller in the garage. We determined during this visit that the system required a pressure regulator. A quote for time and materials was provided to the member which he approved and then we scheduled the final repairs. These were done on (Oct 5) in-spite of that fact that the member still hadn’t paid his bill that was still past due. During the 10/5 visit, the member kept our tech at his house for an extra amount of time requiring he check the entire system yet again while he was present to make sure it was working properly. The system was found to be working correctly with the exception of 1 sprinkler that we suspect was damaged by the neighbor’s lawn maintenance crew per comments from the member. Our tech said the head was indeed hit by a weed eater. Finally, installing a pressure regulator on an exterior irrigation system is a fairly rare occurrence. In fact, over the past 11+ years of installing and maintaining irrigation systems we have only deemed it necessary less than a dozen times throughout the greater Charlotte area. Thus we did not lead off with checking the static water pressure of the system and normally do not. The member also states that we replaced the irrigation valves with a valve not rated to handle the pressure. The valve in need of repair was replaced with a different valve that what he had originally and there hasn’t been one problem with it since. As for the other valves that were worked on, we made repairs with the exact valve and/or parts as he currently had installed. His claim that we replaced the parts with inadequate parts is incorrect unless his system was installed using inadequate parts to begin with. Southscape Landscaping had nothing to do with the original installation. It’s truly unfortunate that the member is unhappy with our work as we have hundreds of satisfied customers. Based on our knowledge of the repairs needed, which were working when we left originally, the job was complete. Had we been contacted immediately afterward and made aware of an inadequate repair, we would have rescheduled service to be done as soon as we could get there. Generally, that would have been the next day. Sadly, we were not contacted about this problem for over two months and the member is upset with our work and invoice. We have, however, gone over our repair charges and feel as though all charges are warranted as billable under our Time & Materials structure."
