He indicated that no point in charging more Freon since it would just leak out and not solve the problem. Condenser replacement was posed as the solution....cost ~$1000 and would take several days to get the unit and install.
Other option was to replace the entire heat pump with new unit with 15+ SEER and 8.5+ HSPF rating to get tax credit.
I discussed heat pump vendor choices with the company owner and got 3 choices. I chose the one with best warranty, maintenance track record and the tax credit. The current heat pump was 9+ years old and the technician advised that the return air vent area was not large enough for even that unit....so the return air vent had to be enlarged to 1.75X the old area.
The heat pump was ordered but because of the Memorial Day Holiday could not be delivered across the long weekend so it was endure the heat for a couple extra days. The installation started by 0900 and all technicians involved wore shoe covers in the house and paid close attention to not damaging anything. Plastic sheeting was placed on stairs, entry foyer and on the floor in the upstairs hallway to catch any debris during the replacement and vent enlargement. The old upstairs heat pump had a much nicer programmable thermostat than the downstairs unit and I asked if they could swap out the thermostats...which they were able to do at no additional charge. Installation and checkout took most of the rest of the day but by 7 pm the upstairs was in cooling mode. The lead technician provided a walkthru of the thermostat programming and advised that a code inspector would have to OK the installation. This was the 1st time that I'd heard that this was required because it had not been done by any of the vendors who installed heat pumps in both up and downstairs.
They cleaned up everything and hauled away...replaced the landscaping around the pedestal that the new outside unit had to sit on and tested the condensate outfall line to make sure it was completely open and functioning.
The replacement unit was more expensive than I'd intended to spend but think, in the end, it will be worth it. I will use this company from now on for my routine heat pump checks and highly recommend them for their technical knowledge and professionalism.
