MILLICAN CONSTRUCTION CO

Several months ago, my husband Garrett and I decided to purchase a lot to build a custom home the in Old Irving Park neighborhood of Greensboro. While interviewing contractors, we were approached by J. Douglas Millican Homes about building our house. We had a contract on the lot but Robert Millican suggested it would be better if we closed on the finished house to save costs. This sounded like a great cost saving measure at the time. J. Douglas Millican Homes purchased the lot on our behalf and we gave them a large deposit to secure our home. We then spent countless hours drawing up a completely custom home for this lot and for our family's needs. We had a draftsman take the drawings and make blueprints to begin construction. I then spent even more time personally visiting sites to select windows, doors, cabinets, floors, etc... However, once the home was under roof J. Douglas Millican Homes determined that they were not making enough money on the house and told us we must give them an additional $70,000 or they would terminate our contract. Sadly, the contract we signed had a very small clause at the bottom of the document that allowed them to terminate because of irreconcilable differences, despite paying them a substantial sum months ago. We trusted this company and to our discredit did not have the contract looked over by a lawyer. We thought we were friends with the builder and even had Robert Millican over to Easter dinner because he was alone after his divorce. They have currently terminated our contract and have returned our deposit money. But because their greed, someone else will be living in my dream house and this builder will be profiting from my custom design.I am sorry to write you like this but my only option is to make sure that other customers in Greensboro, High Point and Kernersville area are protected from this type of heartache. If you choose to continue to do business with them please read your contracts very carefully. It is clear they are only concerned about their bottom line. Additionally they continued to cut corners on the construction costs and were exceedingly disorganized.
