I didn't question the fact that the cat was taken to the back to have the nails trimmed, I just wanted to know about them being so short. That I would have like to be consulted on since my cat had no nails at all and couldn't defend herself at all or use the litter box because she couldn't climb. She is over 15 years old and doesn't jump.
Also, my cat's skin didn't change from when I saw Dr. Alexander to when I took her somewhere else. Her skin cleared up immediately after getting antibiotics. Her scabs were at the point of where the flea medication was applied and that hadn't changed. The vet never considered allergies to the flea medication as I had suggested repeatedly. My other cat lost hair from a flea medication that they gave him. They still kept selling that flea medication (Assurity).
Initial review: I took my cat in to see Dr. Alexander because I have been seeing her for over 20 years for various cats. But this cat that I brought in is a delightful 15 year old cat. She needed her nails clipped and I wanted to see whether the flea medication I was giving her was working because she was still scratching. Turns out my cat has allergies to food, but she also has sensitivities to flea medication. There were skin problems. After examining the skin myself later, I realized that the skin scabs were from the application of the flea medication. Her skin was never tested for any kind of problems other than observation. My cat was not treated for the skin infection (caused by flea medication) until I went to another vet. That resolved the problem but Dr. Alexander never found it. She only suggested that I change her food, which I did. That suggestion did not resolve the allergy issue and the skin problem. I had to go to another vet to get it resolved.
Another problem is the communication with the vet. The doctor took my cat in the back to clip her nails. The problem is she cut them way too short. My cat was horrible confused. My cat is an indoor/outdoor cat and she needs her claws to protect herself. She was so freaked out from the nails that she went outside within a day or two of coming home and didn't come home for a few days. I was frantic because I knew that she could not protect herself. I really believed that she was dead because she was gone for so long. Also, when my cat came home, she couldn't get into the litter box because of her nails.
Another big problem: I have also complained repeatedly about handicap accessibility to no avail. They have promised for years to have a hand raid installed but it is still not installed. They have a gravel parking lot and it is not easy to walk with a cane over this gravel.
"Thank you for being a valued client of TCVS for more than 20 years. We wanted to apologize if you felt your last visit with us was less than par. We always strive to give the best quality of care to our four legged friends as well as to our clients. Having seen Dr. Alexander for the care of your pets for more than 20 years, you must know that she is a very compassionate and highly intelligent veterinarian, with many many years of experience in her field. Her medical notes describe your cat's nails as being very thick, which is common in older cats, and had to be cut back further to be able to remove the dead tissue. We normally bring cats and dogs to our lab in the back so as to have all available resources at our fingertips, including supplies and extra staff if needed. Sometimes it causes more stress on the animal when they witness their owner becoming stressed, so it can be beneficial to all to do some procedures in the back, even simple things such as toe nail trims. In regards to the flea medication, I can assure you that if your animal had any type of infection at the time seen, Dr. Alexander would have prescribed the appropriate medication. Reactions to flea medication can be common in cats, and can usually be treated by bathing the animal and using a different product in the future. Her notes also suggest a food trial, which unfortunately can take 8 weeks or more to see any difference in symptoms. That is the frustrating thing with allergies! There are usually no skin tests or other diagnostic tools to test for skin reactions to flea products. And testing for allergies can be a very expensive and time consuming process for the client, so food and environmental sensitivities usually begin with trial and error strategies such as switching proteins in their food and/or treating symptomatically with antihistamines and other symptom reducing medications. The infection you mentioned may have not been present at the time of your visit, which is done first and foremost with a physical exam by your veterinarian. Other diagnostic tools are usually suggested if an obvious answer is not known. We really strive to make sure the client is educated on all aspects of their visit with us, but we still rely on you as our clients, to let us know if there is a misunderstanding about anything that we do. As for the lack of handicap accessibility, our clinic has been here for many years and the parking lot has always been gravel. We honestly do not see it getting paved in any immediate future, due to the major financial commitment it would bear. We try to stay competitively, yet reasonably priced, with regards to our location and clientele, so unfortunately paving the driveway is not high on our list of priorities. As for the hand rail, you are completely right. We have told you we will install one, but the couple that we have purchased have not worked out well due to the way our entrance was constructed. Our next approach will be to have a rail custom made to fit our building entrance. However, we want to be able to accommodate you in any way we can, so please call us when you are here or on your way, and we will be glad to help escort you and your animals into the building, which is fully handicap accessible. We value you as a client and want nothing more than for you to continue doing business with us in the future. Feel free to let our staff know if you are uncomfortable, unhappy, or confused about anything that is done at TCVS, and we will do our best to make sure you leave here with a positive feeling."
"We truly appreciate your business and your loyalty as a client. We love taking care of animals from the beginning all the way to the end. You are right! Dr. Alexander is AWESOME!"
My only criticisms are that their prices have gone up a lot since I have been going there almost 20 years. But all the vets are expensive.
Also, they are not as handicapped accessible as I have would expect an veterinarian office to be. They will however help me carry my pets into the office because of this accessibility problem.
