PENNYS FLOOR SANDING & REFINISHING

The sanding went OK. They dumped the sawdust in my yard behind a tree, out of immediate sight, (while I had the whole time a large dumpster sitting by the side of the house). When I asked if they were in the habit of leaving trash in customer's backyards, Ray Penny, the owner of the company, told me quite abruptly that is was MY sawdust. No further explanation was offered. He only proposed to pick up three days worth of fast food garbage that he had left by the side of my door. As far as the coating goes, I had not complained about the scuff marks of rubber shoe soles ALL OVER my brand new walls, but I did point out gross markings of a paintbrush and three pools of product which would not dry because it was not spread properly. But on the third day, after the third coat, I discovered a cigarette burned hole smack in the middle of my new refinished floor. It was quite deep, and from the looks of it, it happened between the application of the second and third coat, because it had a layer of varnish on it. I called Ray and serious trouble ensued when he said that HE could not have done it because he didn't allow himself or his son to smoke in people's homes. I asked him repeatedly if he thought it had happened miraculously during the night (I don't smoke, and the house is empty) to which he stuck to his story that he didn't do it. At this point, I would have been satisfied with an heartfelt appology and an offer to fix the problem with some scraping and some wood putty, but he came to see the damage and then told me that the mark had been there all the time, and that he remembered it very well.That's when I decided that nothing good was going to come from pursuing business with him, I didn't bother to point out that if indeed the mark had been there the whole time (which I know is not true) then why didn't he repair it as he did some other little imperfections as we had agreed before hand? The cherry on the cake was when I handed him a check for the partially completed work and told him that I didn't want him to come back. He became very aggressive and told me that I was making up stories to cheat him, and that because of me, he was standing to lose business because of lost time. If he was not so sloppy and unpleasant, maybe he would not lose business, I think he fails to see the cause and effect relationship of this,and since he made a point of holding me responsible for his troubles, I have taken the time to give the review he rightfully deserves. If you love your home, stay away from the man. And he was not even the cheapest! Two great companies in Winston Salem were cheaper than he was, I didn't go with them because they were so far away they wanted to do the whole house at once, and I needed to separate the job in two or three segments. The other local guy who ends up finishing the botched job is cheaper too, and so far much better! I will make sure to give this second person a good review when all ends well with the rest of the house floors.
