We spoke personally with Jim and explained what the car needed, he looked the motor over and concurred that the WATER PUMP needed to be replaced. He asked if we could take him to NAPA in Sunbury to have us purchase the parts under an account he had listed as: M&B Auto Repair 1157 Willleyton Rd. Gates,NC..Jim listed his address as 1147 NC Hwy 37 N Gates,NC .252 377 7870..
The lights started to go on at this point but Jim said that was another local garage he used to work for but got fired I don't know those details but he said they knew he used their account. We did pay CASH in full for the parts approximately $105.00 .
We discussed , again his expertise and he said in so many words that he was a graduate of U-TUBE University, in other words what ever he did 'nt know he'd look up and watch U-TUBE..More lights came on but we had already left the car which wasen't driveable and put out $105.00 cash for parts..
On the return trip to his home/business I again asked if he was confident and had all the tools required to do the job.Jim said" no problem" but later called me and asked if I had a Harmonic Balancer Removal Tool , then again later asked if I had a 1 1/16 " socket he could borrow..My answer was yes to both questions , so I went out to my shop got the tools and took them to Jim..More lights came on but he reassurred me of his knowledge and what You-Tube would do to help him if he "ran up on a problem". In fact once or twice when I called to check progress he said he was watching You-Tube..He asked for $200.00 CASH before he would start working on the car which I gave him..
I'm all about helpinjg out small , even MICRO businesses but with this experience I'm changing my mind a bit..Jim called about 4 days later and said the car was ready,, and to bring $430.00 CASH to pick it up. That makes the deal $105.00 parts , $630.00 labor..
I do need to add that the owner of the car is (a single , unemployed  48 year old college student . She and and Jim exchanged several text messages about the delays Jim had inccured and to re-confirm the price & his mechanical ability. When she did go pick up the car , full CASH payment was exchanged fpor the car and Jim was adament that she sign a document which seemed to have  much more information than was necessary, at least in my opinion...  The car was driven approximately 2 miles and began to run very rough and erratic..
I am disabled and do not drive in the evening so I went with Jim, in my pickup  to rescue the damsel  in distress ,so to speak. The car was towed back to Jim's residence/garage. It became very apparent that the timing chain had either broken or jumped time..I asked Jim if he had test drove the car and he said "no because SHE was in such a hurry I did'nt have time" thats a very poor excuse for not checking ones workmanship..
The car has been towed off Jims property and as of this writing the owner is raising money ( ANOTHER $300.00 CASH ) to have another garage redo Jims work.
