I think they could be more honest about what they are putting in. Or come back and adjust the bill accordingly and not charge me for something I am not receiving. It was done the same day.
The job was significant and not easy. When they opened up the ductwork leading into the chase (running up the center wall of the house), there was mold in the old insulation. We revised the contract with Comfort Wizards to go through the wall and replace that chase - there was no point in putting in all new systems & ductwork and leaving mold in the center of it. They got it done. They contracted with sheet rock/paint contractors who did good job in restoring the walls at the end of the project. I appreciated Harlie's fortitude and his job supervisor who oversaw the whole project and made sure it was done right.
There were some issues with the new system "oil canning" - and they came back and made necessary adjustments until it was resolved. Other repair men that have since been into the crawl space and attic have all complimented the new ductwork and said it was well installed. Overall between the advanced programming on the new Carrier units and some separate improvements in the crawl space, my electricity costs were cut by about 35-40% (your mileage may vary, obviously my previous system was very inefficient).
The next day my wife felt that the thermostat was not controlling the heating unit. I replaced the upstairs thermostat with the same kind of thermostat that I had successfully installed downstairs but it wasn't turning on, so we called Comfort Wizards.
The technician blew another 5amp fuse, and decided that the motherboard was damaged and said it must have happened by incorrectly installing the new thermostat. He repeated that several times, and I told him I followed the detailed instructions and there was no problem with the downstairs unit.
Well it turns out that they felt I was liable for the $275 cost of the replacement of the new motherboard even though that was one of the components that was just installed. The technician's reasoning was that everything was working when he left the night before. The unit stopped working less than 24 hours after the orginal service and they refused any accountability. I suggested that they return the first motherboard as defective for a refund so that neither of us would bear the cost, but they refused.
When we expressed our displeasure, their offer was to shop for a used motherboard to save us some money. The amount is not the complete issue. And we are not interested in a used unit. We don't expect an extended warranty of their work but less than 24 hours is not acceptable.
Comfort Wizards sent out a different technician who was much more consumer oriented. He remembered us from an earlier visit. After the repair, he agreed with us that it was unlikely that we damaged anything overnight but there was no way to to know who or what was at fault. After calling his office, they agreed to split the cost of the replacement part and not charge for labor for the second repair.
Initially, the warranty company wanted to charge another one hundred for the second service call, but they eventually agreed that the second service call would be covered under the same repeat failure conditions for the heater.
The heater system has some intelligence built into the control electronics, giving codes for failure conditions. Over the phone, a representative from Comfort Wizard suggested turning off the breaker for the unit to try to reset it. Unfortunately this also clears the error codes in the unit, which made it impossible for the technician on the first service call to fully diagnose the root problem. Recommendation: leave the power on the unit to preserve the codes (or, if you know what you are doing, take the panel off that covers the control electronics and record the code before turning off the breaker).
Overall, the specific problem was repaired. However, the price I was charged was outlandish. Also, they really tried to sell me a new system I didn't need. First, I was charged for an extra house call because the technician said "your coils were frozen over and I have to return later when they are thawed out." So, the technician told me to let the unit run to thaw out the coils, and he would return afterwards. I wasn't informed about the extra fee for the return visit until afterwards. All the company needed to do was say "before we come out, please leave the fan running to thaw out the coils prior to the technician arriving", as apparently this is a common problem. Then, they wanted to sell me a $500 leak test, because they said I was 6 lbs low on refrigerant. In the end, I declined the leak test and asked them to simply recharge the system, because I knew from prior years (using the same company BTW) that it had a slow leak. They charged me for 6 lbs pounds of refrigerant, and then told me it would only last a few weeks, and I should buy an entirely new system including furnace and air handler for $7,500. They told me I should "avoid wasting money on servicing a dead system". The system ran fine the rest of the summer.
I didn't realize I was ripped off by this company until the following year. This year, the system needed service again, but had my doubts from prior experiences with this company. So, I decided to subscribe to and use Angie's List and found another contractor, who was highly rated. They came out, looked at my system, and I told them the history. The new company told me I had been ripped off, because overall the system was fine, and would likely last several more years. If needing replacement, should only be $3,500 because I only need a compressor, not a furnace and air handler. Finally, I was told the system was only low by 1 pound of refrigerant, unlke the several pounds I had been paying in prior years. Finally, they said I could never be 6 pounds low, because the capacity of the system was only half of that.
In the end, the new contractor I found via Angie's List was more honest, charged me half the price for the same service, and not only fixed my system, but also included a free fall service in the fall.
"In response to the member’s comments, we reviewed the report & found the system to be 13 years old, average life 12 yrs. Before investment on repairs we recommended the option to replace due to age, the R-22 Freon being phased out & converted to R410 A. Carrier Rebate from $100 to $1,200, Tax Credit at that time up to $1,500 and Progress Energy rebate $420.00. The quote the member received, as he mentioned of $3,500 would have been only for the outdoor compressor and evaporator coil. Not a complete system replacement. New system's run from $4,000 to $12,000 - Comfort Wizards on 6/8/2010 made trip to diagnose & found unit frozen. Set system to defrost. Paid $99 Returned on 6/10/10 Found unit low 2 lbs Freon, (not 6) recommended nitrogen leak search & quoted $359, the member declined. Also found crack in drain line, re-glued lines for home owner. Invoice amt paid was $272 covered materials, Freon, time & diagnosis. We at Comfort Wizards put our customers first and always give options as to what will be best for the system and home owner as can be demonstrated on Angie’s List in our other reviews. Our apology to the member for not fully understanding our intentions for his HVAC system"
