Customers (unless educated otherwise) are not going to have a complete understanding of this field of expertise unless they are informed of all aspects of their home. We are also big supporter of several charities here in the triangle (Pennies from heaven). We also run a drive for toys for kids during Christmas. Give away several pro bono jobs for senior citizens that are living on a limited income for health reasons, and can't afford to have their job done right. We decided to bite the bullet and get the entire house re-roofed. We got estimates from about five companies, but Michael O'Quinn from Ridgeline Roofing seemed the most interested and committed to the job. He came to the house several times to take measurements and to show us options on shingles. He was very good at explaining not only the long term versus short term differences in the options, but also the aesthetics of various shingle colors. We chose Landmark shingles by CertainTeed which are significantly thicker than the 3 tab shingles we had originally. For underlayment, Mike recommended a synthetic/plastic material which would not heat up underneath the shingles as black paper does. The new shingles do not constantly shed grit like the old ones did.
Mike's crews came exactly when they said they would. They were professional and efficient. The job took several days, but at the end of each day, the old shingles had been removed, tossed off the roof without damaging a single shrub, picked up, and taken away in a truck. Old plywood was also efficiently removed and disposed. They got the plywood replaced, covered, shingled and ridgelines vented by the end of the day. We were never left with a mess. They even swept a magnet all around the areas where shingles had been tossed and especailly over the drive to make sure no nails were around to puncture tires.
The work they did on the roof valleys (formerly a major source of our leak problems) was impressive. Even more impressive was the flashing. Instead of the silver, fairly flimsy flashing from Lowe's, Mike's flashing crew used thick black flashing which they put around the chimney, the skylights, and where the shingles met brickwork or wood. They had an impressive flashing cutter and crimper which could handle wide pieces of this thick flashing. There's no way water will ever penetrate it. They also caulked every place there was to caulk.
We had only one mishap. In trying to secure the thick flashing around a custom skylight, they partially shattered the inside pane of glass. Mike arranged for the whole sheet of glass to be replaced, then his crew came back to re-flash and re-caulk.
We wanted a quality roof job and shingles that were going to last. These shingles have a lifetime guarantee--in effect, they should last us a good fifty years.
We felt that Mike was completely forthright and honest in his dealings with us and we are quite happy with the job.
