Winston and his guys were very friendly, provided excellent communication at all stages of the project, and provided good suggestions to improve my spec as the project progressed. Everything functions perfectly. It was a great experience and money well spent.
GW May was great, but sadly, I didn't find them on Angie's list, but ended up going to the BBB website for help. I have trouble figuring out your website since businesses are not listed in alphabetical order. Some top names in many cases are 30-50 miles away. I really don't want to pay travel charges when there are good people closer.
Did not know that leaving panel in place would mean that 3-ft metal pipe would be inserted thru eaves. If I had know that a hole would need to be sawn thru roofing, I may not have proceeded with approach. Apart from being highly unsightly, I did not realize this "economical method" would require several bolts to be drilled into brick to strap the pipe to the back wall. Another Contractor who was doing interior work while May crew was on site said the bolts popped and needed to be re-inserted. He did not think the GW May crew was particularly impressive.
Duke Energy came to string the power lines to the top of the roof pipe - took 2 tries because the pipe was barely high enough for the power line to clear the ridgeline of roof. May's crew had to come back after utility's 1st try to RE-SECURE the pipe to the back wall.
Power line hangs 5-6 inches over roof top and is very taut. When I asked whether the line would eventually droop over time and lay on the roof, the County Inspector, owner Winston May, and Duke Energy rep said installation was acceptable and code compliant. If line drooped, Duke Energy would re-string it. However it looks like the power line is tugging against the pipe (my homeowner's opinion). I feel very insecure about possibility of damage to the house from this installation (both design and execution). Can only hope that a windstorm will not cause the power line to tear out the pipe and damage my roof and walls.
Other smaller oversights - attic floor board had to be removed to run wire thru ceiling. The floor boards were not replaced, just left lying in attic with the nails exposed upward. Had to call in GW May to restore, which they did perfunctorily. Circuit breaker was not labelled until I called back to have this done. Newly installed wall outlets were not tested until I complained that one room kept tripping whenever something was plugged into the outlets. While doing attic work, heavy worker jumped down onto attic ladder and cracked it beyond repair. GW May paid for replacement, but I didn't appreciate having his worker be playful while completing the punchlist.
Had kitchen renovation done in October and needed a wall outlet moved to a counter area. Kitchen Contractor told me outlets wires in such a way that he couldn't move any without rewiring the other 2 new ones that GW May had installed. I had to have a complete new outlet installed. Maybe this is acceptable practice, but not a wise one.
The only good thing dealing with this company is that GW May allowed me to pay in 3 installments and immediatley agreed to absorb the cost of hiring another contractor to install a new attic ladder. Ultimately, the cost of the new circuit breaker was not that much less than other proposals, given that I really hate that pipe going through the eaves.
"I am very disturbed that this customer feels insecure about the new wiring we did at her home. Customer satisfaction has always been a priority for me. All work was completed according to code, inspected and approved by the Durham City/Co Electrical Inspector as well as Duke Power. I would like to submit the following clarifications: 1-The customer was presented with two different options of how to accomplish her request. She and I discussed the details of both methods of installation; she chose this option because it cost less. 2-Installation & power line is secure. If a tree falls across any power line it will cause damage; such events cannot be predicted or prevented beyond reasonable precautions which I have taken. 3-Our work is guaranteed. At time of inspection all outlets were tested by the inspector and were working; any piece of manufactured equipment can be defective and fail. As soon as the customer called me I returned and replaced the failed outlet promptly without charge. 4-Our technicians are always professional. This service tech did not 'playfully' jump onto the attic ladder. This was an older ladder; the house was built in the 1950's; it broke while we were using it to access the attic. Because customer satisfaction is a priority for me I offered to pay for a new laddar to be installed. 5-This customer did not inform me of any kitchen renovation plans and I cannot know future changes a customer may decide to do unless they inform me. The removal of walls and addition of electrical outlets must be planned because new wire is being added into an older pre-existing system. According to the Inspections Dept. this kitchen rennovation was done without any electrical permit or inspection. This tells me she is not upset with the quality of my work but more upset about choosing the cheaper option with short cuts and not liking the results."
