Craig came out to discuss the job and provided a quote within a few days. Later I refined exactly what materials we wanted to use and asked for an updated quote, which was never provided and I decided to use another contractor.

We had been having trouble finding good, competent, affordable people to do work on buildings. Made an appointment with them via Angie's list. The business owners, Craig and Joline Murphy, came out to see the job and get enough information to give an estimate. Always impressed by husband, wife partnerships. Only reservation other than they were leery of our dogs was that they were too well dressed. They looked all over and said they'd get back to us with and estimate after they priced materials. About a week later we got the estimate. It was a good jaw dropper like everything I/We don't figure out well but then again, there was much to do that needed good work and as a business owner we appreciate what it takes simply to stay in business. We split the job into two parts - critical first and said "Go". They sent an estimate for the roof portion part we had to get done and as we were going to doing the dirt work ourselves for the sills would wait until next year and weather for them to do the sills and major structural work. The estimate came, we looked it over, we signed it and said "Go". Craig and crew came out as scheduled and went to work. The job that would have taken us weeks got done in less than a day. They cleaned up with trash (as arranged) on our dump truck and all good. We paid him and they left. Discussing it later, my wife and I cried a little at the cost but hey, the work was done as specified and done well so either you do it yourself or pay to get it done. We'd use him still to do the sill work. Hoping this doesn't come back to bite him because some scum sucker might try to take advantage of honesty --- Within a day or so we got a call from Craig saying that the job ended up being much easier and quicker than he planned so he was going to refund some of our money. Before that we had recommended him to a neighbor who needed work done. Now it's "You'd be a fool to go to somebody else."
Description of Work: We has some serious damage to an outbuilding. Part was from a tree that dropped itself on the roof and part from age and rot. We needed the roof part fixed before winter and weren't going to have the time to do it ourselves. The work on rotted sills could get delayed some. We wanted the roof section done to the point that we could do the roofing ourselves. We also needed people who would treat our dirt driveway with care as too many people cause us work if they drive on it.

The husband and wife team came to my house to measure and inspect for an estimate. Seemed quite professional. Then, many weeks went by with no contact at all. When I asked repeatedly what was going on, Craig said they had been having difficulty finding the right match for my windows - fair enough. When I asked why he hadn't contacted me, he came up with a creative excuse for his phone AND email not working. Okay. The I got the estimate. I wanted to go with one part of the two-part estimate. I asked about including some language to make sure that the appearance would be satisfactory (this was the exterior of my house). At this point, he got what I can only describe as huffy and withdrew the estimate, leaving me high and dry. Very unprofessional. I have an extensive email trail that substantiates all this. Disappointing given the other Angie's List reviews!

This is quite a colorful review, making a situation look like something that it is not. During the weeks he thought there was no contact, this client was called on the phone several times to try to explain to him the trouble we were having locating the windows he wanted, and to try to verify with him, if the ones we eventually found, were acceptable to him. He did not return these phone calls. During this time, we also did have phone technicalities, and one day that we did not receive email. We tried again to contact this client and explain this to him, while still maintaining a timely process for him. He then asked for changes on the estimate, which we honored. When he did finally accept our price we then emailed a contract to him, and he then asked for changes on that. We obliged to those changes and then were presented with another change that was requested of us. After many inconsistencies on the part of this client, we politely, and directly, declined this request, as it was open ended wording. There was no arrogance involved in this reply to him. It was in the best interest of our business, to respectfully withdraw our estimate at this time. Our reviews show the consistency, hard work, honesty, and integrity that we continue present to our clients.

I submitted a request to Craig for a bid on a deck project. He contacted me that same day. Craig was very professional and scheduled an appointment to discuss the project. I had to cancel my meeting with Craig and did not utilize his service because I decided to go with a contractor I had used in the past. I would most definitely contact Craig again.

This client was scheduled for an estimate, and we did erroneously miss the meeting due to a human error in scheduling. As soon as this client brought this to our attention we immediately contacted him to apologize and reschedule. Unfortunately, he did not respond. As our history shows, we take pride in the quality service we provide and attempt to treat every customer as if they are the only customer. Please take a look at our great reviews that illustrate this point.
It went well - crew was punctual and cleaned up well after the work. Great trustworthy people.

Overall we are very pleased with the outcome of the deck and have received many positive comments on it. Craig was professional, prompt and provided great ideas as we put together the plan for the upgrade. We got several quotes on the work, and Home Advancements was in the upper range of what we were quoted. However, what made us chose Craig was his professionalism, experience and suggestions. Originally we were told that it would be 4-6 weeks for work to start at the time we received the quote. However, Craig had an opening in his schedule as was able to get started within days. Unfortunately, we did have a couple bumps along the way with getting materials, however, we were pretty specific in what we wanted (i.e. 42" railings, which had to be sourced from out of state). While the total days of labor were as advertised (3-4 days), this ended up getting spread over 2-3 weeks as materials became available. While we had hoped that the project would have been completed a bit sooner, the quality of work was excellent. We also had a bit of a mishap with the material delivery truck knocking down a cable line in front of our house. Craig was proactive in notifying the correct parties to get the issue resolved. However, this did present some inconvenience for us, as the line was blocking our driveway. I would not hesitate to recommend Home Advancements for this type of work.
Description of Work: Performed significant upgrade of approx. 575 sq ft existing deck. Removed old pressure treated boards, railings and stairs. Installed new EverGrain composite in Cape Cod Gray, installed new PVC railings, fabricated set of stairs (3 stringers, closed risers), fabricated step between deck levels, installed gate at top of stair landing and removed and replaced piers and footings under landing.

Good Communicator Did not kill us on extras as we needed some flashing and flagstone cutting. Handled all the permit hassles with the city. Finished on time and on budget.

Initial contact was by phone, and a visit for site assessment/measurements was scheduled for three days later. Husband and wife team came by right on time. After measuring and reviewing the work desired, they agreed to submit a quotation for the work to be done via email in two business days. Quotation also arrived right on time. Home Advancement's bid wasn't in alignment with other contractors that bid on this work, but their service and responsiveness in the quotation process was excellent. If I had more work to be done, I would contact them again, in the hopes that their pricing was more competitive on the next project.

This review has long been overdue. We contacted Craig Murphy last year for a small kitchen project. Our experience with him has all been positive. From the time they scoped out the project, to his estimated quote, to the actual work and to a minor follow up repair, we only have high praises for him and his team (consisting of family members). However, I can say that the best thing about dealing with him is that he listened patiently to our vision and with his expertise and leadership, executed it perfectly. Thank you, Craig.

Throughout the process, Craig was very responsive and promptly returned phone calls within twelve hours, (and often within two). He was patient with us when we changed our minds in the design process, and offered suggestions without trying to sell or brow-beat us. When the actual work started, he and his team were always very prompt. When they said that they would be here at seven, they were in the cul-de-sac by ten till seven, coffee in hand and respectfully keeping noise down for the neighbors. When we waived them up, they quickly set up and got to work. I was amazed when they dug three of four holes for pilings by hand within forty minuets. His team are all skilled professionals and work effectively and efficiently together. Each day they cleaned up after themselves and were it not for the lumber neatly stacked at the top of the driveway, you would have few indications that a construction project was underway. When we had questions, Craig was more than willing to listen, and answer in a way that laypeople like us could understand. All along the way, he never hounded us for payments, only making polite mention of the milestones as they were reached (usually ahead of schedule.) Bear in mind that this project went on during the wettest year I can remember with a tropical storm (Irene) and a freak October snow storm, which by the way Craig's work weathered without issue. We are thrilled with the finished product, and our friends, family and neighbors are amazed at the way the work blends into and enhances our home. I can tell you that we will definitely turn to Craig for our future projects. He, and his team have definitely earned our trust and respect. The only hesitation I would have in recommending him to others is the worry that he would become too busy when I need him next!
Description of Work: We hired Craig to renovate our screened porch and add a covered porch to the back of our reproduction salt box. This is a fairly large porch adding a five by fifteen foot space onto the screen porch and a ten by twenty-eight foot covered porch. This porch required tying into the the existing roof as well as adding two sky-lights. Craig provided a detailed estimate, pulled all the permits and performed everything except electrical, painting and staining. Based on the designs our draftsman supplied Craig assisted us in deciding on the best materials to use, he even had us over to his home on a Sunday to look at the Azek porch boards he had used on his porch. He provided us with ideas for accent points as well. He also repaired rot and insect damage and hung a new custom door.
Craig answered our initial phone call promptly, and arrived right on time to inspect the job. His estimate came the day he said it would. We agreed on a date, and he and his crew were right on time. They finished the job quickly, but really thoroughly. The next day I noticed a creaking joist, and within half an hour of my phone call he was back to take care of it. Awesome service. I consider Craig to be a great find. Thanks, Angie's List!
Description of Work: Craig and his excellent crew...sons and uncles...repaired and refinished our family room floor, ready for my carpet to be installed. He had to install a beam at the center of the room, add a pier in the center, ledger existing joists, and add new joists where ours were insufficient. He insulated the space and added tongue and groove deck as the sub-floor, and reinstalled our existing stairs.

Prompt appointment for estimate. Got estimate to me quickly. Due to a delay on another job, Craig squeezed me in. In less than 2 days (really just about a day) they had expertly replaced the window with the slider, reusing my old vinyl siding, and built a superb deck. Amazing how fast Craig's team worked. Extremely punctual and clean. I wish I had more projects for him to do!
