The template maker made some mistakes. The counter top was ever so slightly too long, the overhang was not ground smooth, and it was missing 2 of the 3 back splashes that were supposed to be included.
The installer was doing his best to make corrections. He had an accident while making these repairs; his grinder blew up and shattered my glass oven door. I called Surface Products and they said they would take care of it, but I had to call over and over for 2 weeks before they made arrangements for someone to come out. When the repairman did come, they had not made arrangements for payment. The guy couldn't do the work without payment. After being on the phone between Lowes and Surface Products for over 90 minutes, I ended up paying for it myself. They actually said that they had to get the installer to make the payment and that he was at lunch and would have to call back later.
I called the installer on his personal cell phone and he told me that he had quit immediately after working on my job. He said that Surface Products gave him a hard time about the accident and are making him personally pay. They lied to me about, saying that he still worked there. He said that he had been doing this work for 25 years and that this was the worse company he'd ever worked for.
Not only all of this, but when they finally came back to install the 2 missing pieces they don't even match! They are darker and thicker
than the original material.
It is beautiful with the flow of it placed how we liked and we like the bar not having to have braces under it, since we shortened the width a little bit from before. The braces were nice and matched, but we really didn't want to use it as a bar like before, but more for an area to place food on for serving and not eating at. They got it how we wanted it. We are so excited and the place looks new, fresh and updated.
We ended up spending about the same -- maybe even slightly less -- than we would have spent at a big box store for a truly spectacular piece of stone. It's Brazilian Diamond & just beautiful, lots of mica chips and swirls of different color. Even though options were limited for the remnant on how to cut, they did a very nice job laying out the seam and templating.
The installers (Travis and Mike) were also great. We are kept our original cabinets (maybe even original to house, from 1936), and the install was definitely a challenge because the surface was not level. This was not expected from templating -- the old tile countertop had been leveled on the surface using quickset -- but they did a great job dealing with it. They helped me shim underneath some of the cabinets and shimmed under the slab until they got it level with a flat seam.
Great experience throughout, will definitely use them again for bigger kitchen project, bathrooms, etc.
*Scheduling of reconnecting the plumbing wasn't adequate (scheduled too soon for reconnect - caused confusion and multiple trips by the plumber. Instead of scheduling for the next day - was scheduled for 6 hours later)
*Measured wrong on side backsplash panel - had to make a return trip for a new side panel that fit.
*Caulking wasn't done correctly - had to make a return trip for filling in gaps between backsplash and countertop.
*Workers didn't remove shoes - dirtied the carpet going to our upstair bathroom. Had to clean ourselves.
*On removal of old countertop - unnecessarily ripped sheetrock top layer causing us to have to re-puddy/paint bathroom walls.
*On removal of old countertop - hit the master bedroom door frame - causing a dent and area that needs painting.
Workers didn't acknowledge any of these items - had to point them out to management - which I did by pictures to illustrate. Management basically "apologized" but that was all. No offer to make right any of the concerns we pointed out. Now I have to pay someone to repair the items and have them painted etc. The countertop itself looks fine - just a painful process for supposedly a turn-key solution and a hassel to have the repairs done on my dime.
"We are always happy to work with a homeowner to stay within their budget. Not sure if this customer priced the same product elsewhere, but the price they received was well below the typical price in the market. This particular brand currently has problems with backorders, so installation lead times of several weeks are typical for this product only."
