I heard about them through a networking group. Somebody invited me out to lunch. I went with them and they were there. Everything was great.

My experience with Appalachian Chimney Service was a mixed bag.  I initially contacted him in mid November and made an appointment with him for an afternoon about two weeks following.  He was a no show.  I contacted him the following week and he was very apologetic and we made another appointment for a few days following.  He arrived as promised, inspected two fireplace chimneys and cleaned a wood stove flue.  He did a good job with the cleaning.  We discussed problems I was having with down drafts in my chimneys and he suggested that we install high wind chimney caps and provided a price for installing them a few days later.  After a few days I contacted him again and asked that he go ahead and order a high wind cap for the wood stove flue.  He said it would take about ten days.  I haven't heard from him since and that was about four months ago.
He was very difficult to reach.  He rarely took phone calls, his voice mail box was always full and he didn't respond to emails.  The only way I could reliably reach him was via text message.
Applachian Chimney Service probably does good work but their responsiveness and professionalism leave much to be desired.

We originally wanted the cap painted due to peeling paint. Jason noticed upon inspection the cap had never been properly prepped for paint and that was the reason for peeling paint. He removed the shroud, took it to his shop, scraped, cleaned, prepped, and painted with special chimney paint.
One week later he returned and replaced the shroud with stainless steel hardware to eliminate rust problems over time. Cost was $175 total. Jason is knowledgeable about chimneys and materials used in and on them. While here he noticed my sealed combustion gas fireplace was "sooting" due to black residue on the glass. Since this is not normal, I will bring him back to clean and adjust my insert. Jason and his crew are professional and hard working.

The whole experience went well. The morning they were suppose to come out they called to let us know that they were on the way. When they arrived they listened to the problem that we described. They then proceeded to check out the chimney from inside the house and the outside. They then asked if we would like for them to do a level two inspection to get a better idea of what the chimney looked like from the inside. The equipment they brought out was a camera that could capture the inside of the chimney. The camera revealed that our chimney was not in very good shape. The biggest problem was that it was out of code because it had not been lined when it was put in and the bricks were cracked, with holes in places. They recommend that we have the chimney lined. They gave us a great deal to have everything done at one time but we were not able to do it financially at that time so we opted for the crown coat and the sealer. We've waited to do this review until we've had a few heavy rains and we have no leaks thanks to Appalachian Chimney Service! Thanks so much for your great work!

Work went very good. They pressure washed chimney first. Once Jason started on the chimney repair there was more mortar issues. They then removed and re-mortared the entire chimney above roof instead of just bypassing these other issues. Install of the stove insert went very fast with no problems. Stove looks great in the house. He took time to go over the operation of the stove and provided some helpful hints also. The chimney had leaked for some time and chimney had some white effervescent on the lower part of chimney. They pressure washed and scrubbed twice. The second time when he came back to seal chimney after letting it dry for a week. The dampness has already been greatly reduced but I know chimney is still drying. Very satisfied with the work and price.

Jason was able to come look at the challenge in short order to let me know if moving the fireplace would be a reasonable option. He was knowledgable and we agreed on a course of action and a price. He followed through just as we planned and completed the job on time and on budget.

Came out in Oct, at the recommendation of a contractor, due to what appeared to be smoke stains on the ceiling by the fireplace.  They determined and showed me where there was a crack in the tiles where the wood stove was connected and leading out to the roof.  Had to have the tiles removed and replaced with stainless steel pipe.  Was involved and time consuming and had to make a second trip out to complete.  They explained  everything in detail and unfortunately complete tear out and replacement was necessary.  They tried to keep the place neat despite the tearing out of part of a wall.  Of course some other issues were discovered but they were able to fix them too.  We had them come back a month later and point up the masonry on the fireplace.  Seems to be working fine now.

Jason did a great job explaining what needed to be done, offering repair options, updating us on his progress, addressing unforeseen problems (roof rot), and completing repairs in a timely fashion. We were grateful Jason is so versatile and qualified to deal with related issues, such as the roof rot, so I didn't need to hire a carpenter to replace rotted timbers. We were grateful for the option of applying masonry over the damaged brick above the roofline. This was an economical solution for us since the chimney is not easily visible, and can be painted to match the trim color of our brick home. Jason and his assistant, Sebastian, worked well together. They did unexpected extras as a courtesy such as trimming interfering tree branches, and uncloggiong an adjacent rain gutter. They worked very efficiently and cleaned up all the mess. We are very pleased with their work.
