Our sewing machine was old and jammed. Some years ago, we took it to a repair place in Raleigh, but this time I thought I would look for someone more local. We found Tony's Sewing Machine Repair on Angie's List. He is located just outside Clayton, and he makes house calls! Since our machine is a console type, this was a big plus for us. We called and he came to our house the next day. He did a through job of repairing and cleaning the machine and even gave us some lessons on setting it up. His price was more than reasonable, especially considering he came to us. Great guy that does great work at a reasonable price.

It needed to be cleaned out and they cleaned it out. It is in great working order and works like a charm. It was really reasonable and was done when they said it was going to be done. I recalled them being relatively quick and on time.

I have been meaning to write this review for a LONG time but forgot until now. This place was highly recommended to me by other quilters, but I had nothing but a negative experience with them. I can't believe all the A ratings because my experience was nothing but an F. Ten years ago, I bought a sewing machine for my daughter who was in elementary school and just learning to sew. I bought a used Janome for $400 for her from this store. It worked okay, then developed problems after a week. I took the machine back and they "fixed" it. Same problem and went back twice more. After the third time the machine broke, I said "forget it!" and just trashed the machine. Of course, my husband was very angry that I spent that much money on a machine that didn't work. And my poor daughter was so discouraged. I think because they saw that the machine was just for a little kid, they sold me a lemon. That was VERY mean of them! Now I am a loyal Bernina customer and am a client at another sewing machine dealer.

Turnaround was 1 week, ready when promised (I called to confirm before driving there). Friendly service; seemed very familiar with a variety of new and old sewing machines (granted, I don't know much about them). He checked the machine's functionality before I left. Really thorough driving directions! It's hard to find the store with just a GPS, but I was given specific landmarks to look for. When I picked it up, he'd replaced my foot pedal and described a problem that I'd been having. The problem isn't fully resolved, but it's not a big deal: the machine is old (1970's, at least), and it just needs an extra nudge to get going. It would have been nice to know about the new pedal (and extra ~$25) when I called to confirm that it was ready, but it's better than buying a brand new machine (and the new pedal is more user-friendly than the old one). Overall, though, I'd go back if I have issues with my machine or for maintenance. I asked for a recommendation for how often to get it cleaned and was told about every 1-2yrs depending on frequency of use. I feel like I could ask much more complex questions or bring troubleshooting issues here if I needed to.

I took my machine to Tony based on the outstanding reviews on Angie's list. He certainly did not disappoint. My sewing machine is 50 years old and recently seemed to be having a bit of reluctance going. I figured best to have it checked out by someone who knew what it needed. I took the machine in on Saturday and was told I could pick it up the following Saturday. When I went to pick it up, I was told there was no charge. I was floored!!! Tony said he could not repair it to his standards (meaning all the fancy stitches it was supposed to do), so therefore, there was no charge. It still stitches straight and zig zag just fine, which is all I really need. He cleaned, oiled and replaced a rubber bobbin winder but still did not accept payment because it was not up to his standards -- they are certainly very high. He did not try to sell me another machine either. If I ever buy another sewing machine, it will certainly be at his recommendation. I can't say enough nice things about this business. It was certainly worth the "road trip" from Montgomery County to Fairfax. I highly recommend this honest and reliable businessman.

The provider knew exactly the problem I was describing (he actually finished my sentence while describing it to him). He assured me that it only required an adjustment to a part. I picked up my sewing machine (Viking 400 Computer) a week later and it was ready as promised. Machine works great...like new. I would take it in again for cleanings in a heartbeat.

Tony is a really nice and knowledgeable guy, and doesn't patronize you if you don't know much about sewing or sewing machines.
Description of Work: I came for advice on a Singer Simple machine which was missing the spool cap. I also was in the market for an upgrade but don't know a lot about machines, so Tony gave me a quick over-view. He did not pressure me to buy a machine from him (he sells Jamones). However, he had a machine in my price range, so i did end up getting one from him. According to my friends and family I got a great machine for a reasonable price. In the mean time, Tony rented me a machine for 3 days -- it was supposed to cost $25, but he ended up waiving the rental price since I bought a machine from him.

This is the place to go! Not only does Tony know all about sewing machines but he is an expert on old ones. He even saved me a house call and the price of one. He told me over the phone what he thought could be wrong with my sewing machine (which I had inherited from an aunt over 20 years ago) and we were set to go. He is friendly and cheerful and we would definately call him in the future.

Economical and fast service, considering the need to order parts that are no longer being manufactured. The machine works like it did for grandma. The repair still cost less than a new machine and this Singer is now a generational working heirloom.

My elderly mother called Tony Whitmore to take a look at her beloved sewing machine from the '60s, which was inoperable. (FSC appears to be one of the few such businesses in this field that does house calls.) He arrived at her retirement community at the appointed day and time to take a look at the machine. It turned out that what she thought were "jammed" (and possibly broken) gears was actually just decades of grime clogging the works. Tony fixed the machine in her apartment. Not only was the repair expertly done (including Tony vacuuming up the debris from the carpet after he finished the work), but my mother RAVED about his knowledge, warmth and friendliness--he couldn't have been nicer. (Clearly, he has excellent people skills and apparently knows how to talk with older customers.) The sewing machine now runs like it's brand-new, as Tony said it would--my mother can't get over it. He charged her only for the house call, which was $78.50 (he had initially said on the phone that if the gears were indeed broken, it might cost $300 to replace them). My mother--who had been worried about what she feared would turn out to be an expensive ordeal--was incredibly relieved. She was so thrilled with the service and "customer experience" Tony provided that she asked him to send her business cards so she could distribute them to other friends and neighbors in her community who have sewing machines! Talk about a perfect transaction!

After consulting Angie's List for possible sewing machine repair shops, I took a 60-year-old Pfaff to Fairfax Sewing Center for assessment. It had been inherited many years ago and left gathering dust on the assumption that it was antiquated and irreparable. To my surprise, the owner was very familiar with the model. He told me the likely causes of its operating problems, and warned me of the consequences if certain parts -- no longer available -- were worn out. He promised completion of the restoration in a week; he called later and asked for more time, and then finished it in just one extra day. I appreciated his honesty, his craftsmanship, and his deportment. I would highly recommend Fairfax Sewing Center, even though, as another rater commented, it is hard to find. Most fine gems are.

When asked what he would recommend, he answered that it would not be worth the $200. So he lost the immediate repair job, but he will get my future business ... my wife and daughter both have machines that need tune-ups. After talking with him he has earned both my trust and confidence.
Description of Work: When the sewing machine was brought into the store the owner did an on-the-spot assessment of the repairs needed to an 30 year old mach that had not been used in more than 12 years. The owner quickly found a gear with 2 broken teeth that would have to be replaced. He said the replacement gear available would work but the machine would be excessively noisy because the mating gear to the broken gear was no longer available.

I tried to use a sewing machine, which had not been used in 8 years, with no luck. So I checked out Angie's List and took my machine to Fairfax Sewing Machine Center. I told them it had not been touched in 8 years and was kind of locked up. The needle would not move. The woman that helped me was very nice and professional. She tried to turn the manual knob on the side and commented that it was very tight. She said that they would do a service of the machine and that's all she expected that it would need. I dropped it off on Monday, 6/3, she said it would be ready the following Monday, 6/10. Then on Friday, 6/7, I received a call that it was ready to be picked up and all it needed was the service. Fabulous news! I picked it up Saturday and put it to use Saturday evening. Works like a new machine. Thanks so much to Fairfax Sewing Machine Center!

I found Fairfax Sewing Center on Angie's list with lots of great reviews. I called about service an was toldI should bring the machine in for an estimate. When I did, Tony, the repairman, took one look and asked me if I wanted to spend some serious money or buy a new machine. His estimate was $160 to do the repairs. I chose to fix up my old, familiar machine. He said it would take a week, which it did. When I picked it up I asked if they were still offering the senior discount that I had seen on Angie's List. He said, "Of course!" and the final bill was $144. Besides doing the repair I requested, Tony replaced the dried out rubber "feet" on the bottom of the machine and shined up the surfaces of both the machine and the foot pedal. He was very knowledgeable and pleasant to deal with. I recommend his service highly. My only difficulty was finding the shop. It is located in the corner of a small shopping center and there is no sign on the large board that identifies the shops and restaurants within the center. I knew I was in the right location (corner of Lee Hwy and Jermantown Rd) but had to call from across the street because I didn't see the shop when I first got there.

Fairfax Sewing Center was absolutely wonderful. I have an old Sears sewing machine from the mid1970's. It is very heavy and difficult to carry. I was struggling to lug it into the store, when an angel swept in and offered to carry it for me. From that point on, I knew my sewing machine was in good hands. He looked at it and gave me an estimate which was very reasonable and said he would call if it turned out to be more. 4 days later I received a phone call that my machine was fixed. I didn't even have to carry it to my car when I picked the machine up. This was full service all around. I have taken up quilting and have been using it ever since. My machine runs better than it has in 10 years. I will definitely take it back for a yearly check-up.

Spectacular. Very professional. Well worth the drive.
Description of Work: EXCELLENT service for two different sewing machines. This couple really understands sewing machines. They recognized that I had used the wrong bobbin in the Janome and did a nice cleaning, oiling and adjustment of the tension. The Singer hadn't been used in years and they did the same. The gentleman insisted on carrying the machine to the car and told me I could have called and he would have brought it in from the car.

I had a problem winding the bobbin in a sewing machine that I use infrequently. I couldn't figure out what I was doing wrong. (Very frustrating!) I took the machine to the store where the staff showed me the proper process. I was shortly on my way and very pleased with their kind service. I will definitely use them when I have routine maintenance in the future.

Fairfax Sewing did prompt and professional work. When I asked the owner how he tested the machines, since they are pedal operated, he showed me the modified drill he uses to mimic the belt. I was very happy with the work and look forward to using my grandmother's antique sewing machines.
