"Thanks [Removed Member Name]! It was a pleasure to serve you! ANGIES LIST is a great service and I'm glad they were there so we could connect! Thanks so much! John"
"Awe! This one was SO much fun to do and really exceeded all our expectations! You and your husband have a bright future ahead of you and I look forward to any future work! God Bless and Go UGA! :-)"
"This my friends, is a first for me! I actually walked away. I'll admit it. I walked away after setting over 3/4 of this job. With five days given, and two to spare! I actually had awesome approval from one homeowner and one GC, for ALL the work I had done... The second homeowner pulled the Master from me! Called me a sub par contractor. Made fun of my appearance. DID not have all demo completed. [Member Information Removed] And had appliances in my way. (They offered to take care of it to save $) Thought they could bribe me with suggestive behavior and alcohol. As a Christian family man, that alone was reason to leave. Yes. They paid 25% but I walked after doing 75%. As far as the comments on my craftsmanship? I will provide photos to anyone who asks. It was stunning work! You don't get to be where I am after all these years without being great! But as I reminded my family, we are human and you cannot please everyone :-) With 1700.00 [Member Information Removed] on the table, I chose my morals and principals. And that my friends is far more valuable than money. Even though in my opinion they owe me! God Bless"
"This parting of the ways is unfortunate. Not for the job. The lies. Or her scrutiny over how I look? But for the very serious disease known as Depression. I have some in my family that suffer from this condition so I do sympathize for this client. I was careful in every way knowing her condition, but it was never good enough. My work is good. My record is outstanding. My prayers are that she gets better. For those that may read this, this particular job was over two years ago and from what I gather she has went on to fire at least two other contractors that I know of. Really a sad story. :-("
"It was so cool to see how this job turned out! Really transformed the kitchen and made it so much brighter and decorative! I think it's important to let our viewers know that the cost shown included a demolition of an existing tiled backsplash as well as the new installation that also had to be spread out due to a counter installation as opposed to working straight through :-) Thank you so much for trusting me and we look forward to your upcoming projects. May God bless you and your family! It was my pleasure to serve you :-) John"
"Was an absolute pleasure! I love doing backsplash work as it is the most creative place to express tile design! It was really nice meeting you. Thanks! :-)"
"Thanks (removed member name)! It was a lot of fun. I'm waiting on that upstairs bath! Lol God Bless. I hope you are doing well. John"
"To the both of you! Thank you. It was really cool working with you and I totally will be looking forward to the upcoming projects. Trust is important. And I am glad I earned yours! God Bless. John"
"What a great way to start this year off! I am glad you are delighted and want to thank you for your kind words :-) I look forward to serving you in the future! God Bless. John"
"Just a note to say I thank you for your kind words and I hope you enjoy your fire place for years to come! God Bless. John Gaskill"
"Thanks so much for the kind words. It's nice to do a smaller project every now and again. I hope your time in Charlotte is a good one! God Bless! John"
"Thank you!!! It's going to be a great year!"
"Thank you once again for trusting me with your work. We are looking forward to a great 2014! Won't you join us? John"
I felt very comfortable with John and let him come and go from my home as I had to go to work. Because of the drywall removal and installation of new drywall, John did the job over a 3-day period. Each day he left the work area neat and clean. He suggested the backsplash be finished off with pencil trim, which my family member did not use, and I purchased for $36 dollars and he installed. It made a huge difference - you can now tell my kitchen backsplash was done by a professional and one that knows his craft well.
I will be using John again in the near future as I want to tile my bar area . . .where people's shoes and knees bump up against the paint and I have to constantly clean after I've had company. I've seen this done and the effect is stunning. Since the bar is in the kitchen area, I'm using the same backsplash, and John agreed it would look great and he will do the job as soon as I obtain the additional tile.
John's work came in at his original quote - with only the addition of the pencil trim, grout and sealer for a total of less than $50. John and his helper did not leave my home until everything was as clean as when they arrived. And he did not accept any payment until the job was done and I was satisfied. And, I was . . . an exceptionally happy and satisfied customer!! As I mentioned, I will use John Gaskill and Two Guys Tile & Design again!
"What can I say except "thanks". So awesome was this review and I totally look forward to your upcoming project! God bless you. John Gaskill"
Overall Experience : I gave John a C simply because he did not complete the job he committed to. I will provide more detail below.
Quality: John gets an A here because he does high quality work. He also has good creativity and vision and is very helpful with design ideas.
Price: I gave him a B. His prices are mostly in line. I have had prorated quotes from 4 licensed contractors to finish the work he started. Some were cheaper and some were a little higher.
Responsiveness: I gave him a B. John is reasonably easy to reach and responds appropriately, although not always promptly, to most text messages, emails, and calls.
Punctuality: i gave him a D here because this category and the next speak to why John did not meet our expectations on this project. We experienced multiple delays, excuses and no shows for work that I will itemize below.
Professionalism: I gave him a D and I believe that this is being generous. John and I disagreed and argued at the end when I challenged him on the multiple delays and pace of work. He did not respond in a professional manner. He took it personally and reacted defensively rather than taking ownership and working to correct the issues. It is accurate and fair to say that he and I were both upset and had a final heated conversation on the phone. I became most upset, and very surprised, when he indicated he would just come to get his tools to pack up and leave before laying the first tile. Even after a more calm period of discussion, I gave him the opportunity to reconsider, start fresh and finish the job. I explained to him that this was not personal, it was business. I told him I didn't desire to start over and research new contractors. He chose to keep it in the personal realm and declined. Below I will detail all of the delays throughout the project.
June 10: Day 1-Demolition: John emailed and made the unilateral decision not to work because of rain. The stated reason was that he didn't want to track mud in our house. I thought this was odd, thinking that there are paint contractors begging for inside work because they can't work outside with all the rain we've had in Mecklenburg county. We have a garage and driveway. There would have been no mud. Most contractors put down tarp or plastic and/or remove their shoes. I accepted his reason however and responded OK.
June 11: Day 2-Demolition: I received an email with "Emergency" in the subject line. John said that he had a family emergency and had to fly Indianapolis for a personal family issue. I was given no timelines or specifics, only that he was requesting leniency. A few days later he called me. We talked and agreed that he would start the demo on June 20th. While the delay was an inconvenience to us, I made it clear to John that I understood and we would stay the course with him. I told him that I hoped all was well with his family and that I would see him on the 20th. John did complete the demo on June 21st, taking 2 days.
June 28: in Prep for tile phase: John called to tell me that he couldn't get a sitter for his kids and couldn't work. Around this time I let John know that we had a planned vacation starting July 8th and we first began discussing timelines as an issue. John asked if he could work in our home while we were away on vacation for a week. I politely told him no but thought this was unprofessional. I wouldn't allow that for any contractor unless it was a family member, and probably not then. He later brought this up as a "delay on my part" which, again I thought was extremely unprofessional and insulting.
July 12 Date agreed to resume after vacation: John and I agreed that this was a firm date to resume. The day before he sent a casual email putting me off until Monday the 15th stating that another job he was working on went long and again referred to my delaying him with vacation. We spoke and he understood my expectations clearly at this point that I wanted the job completely finished by Friday 19th. He agreed to this.
July 15 New date agreed to resume: John was to pick up and deliver tile as agreed, and said he was going to do final mud work in the shower before starting tile. The first thing he asked for was permission to work on Saturday the 20th in case he needed the extra 1/2 day or so. I reluctantly said yes. He showed up at 9:30 to drop off tools and left for the tile store. At 2:30 pm he had not started working in the bathroom. He claims he made 3 trips to the tile store and that his truck broke down. Perhaps this is accurate. I was at the point where it didn't matter and I didn't bother trying to verify it. The tile and supplies sitting in my garage, however, would have easily fit in my mid sized SUV in one trip. Frustrated, and having lost most of another day, this is the point where I challenged him on his efficiency, the progress and pace, and he quit.
I stand by the above review. While I fully expect John to read and refute it, it is accurate. I am fairly certain he will blame this on me and not accept responsibility. He has already said as much in our conversation. Also worth mentioning, the plumbing rough in and sheetrock repair work were done as planned in the middle of the project in 3 days (June 24-26th). These were the only scheduled "no work" days for John during the project.
In spite of our negative experience with John, I would still recommend him for tile work because the quality of his work is very good. I would simply advise other members to have a firm agreement with him up front on very clear and specific expectations for timeframes of the job. We were inconvenienced with repeated delays on this job that was set to begin on June 10th and was barely 2/3 of the way finished on July 15th. We were then faced with the inconvenience of starting over mid project.
"Thanks sir. We had a pleasant experience and I think the Backsplash was the icing on the cake. I am glad you are happy and to those reading, I did complete this work personally. God Bless to all of you and we shall see you soon. John."
John also enhanced the kitchen with a mirror image of the backsplash across the room at our built-in desk. It is very unique and draws your attention to both spectacular pieces of work. We enjoyed his sense of humor and his attention to detail. We can not wait for him to eventually re-do our master bath.
"SSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo great getting this feedback. We had an absolute great time installing at your home. TO those that might be reading this, please understand that Her price was for two backsplashes and the material was hexagon marble with a dot per four inlay! It was awesome when it was all said and done, but I believe it was a good install, because the Youngers taught Len and I how to take a break at lunch rather than work through it, which is what I ususally do! It allowed me time to focus a little better and kept my load steady...I am excited for any future work Mrs Younger, and you know you can call me anytime personally. You and your husband were such a delight and I wish the two of you most Love and Health in the future. God Bless you, and thanks again for such nice words. Peace Love and Tile. John."
"Thanks so much for the review sir. It was nice to have the work and for all that are looking at the price, please understand that it included ALL materials. lol. I would hate for anyone to think that was just labor! haha. Customer, I know you will enjoy your floors for years to come and I look forward to helping you achieve your plans for the outside once Spring approaches. Thanks once again for the chance to serve you. God Bless and have a great Holiday Season. John Gaskill."
"Although the reason for me being there was just a leaky shower, I am sure glad you took the advise and upgraded your shower. It turned out soooooo lovely and working with you was an absolute pleasure. If there is anything you need in the future, do not hesitate to call at any time. Blessings to you and "your kids" lol. Thanks again. John"
"So flattering... Really. It was really such a pleasure to help you out with your project. I found you to be most pleasant as well. Its nice to be able to talk of Jesus so freely. I wish I could in every home. Your backsplash added so much to the kitchen and once you Paint, it will look fabulous. Thanks so much. John. P.S. I know you were interested in having other floors done, so please remember me down the road. I should be ready to go in a couple of months. Thanks so much again."
"WOW, and we are not even done yet! lol. Flattering, really. See ya soon for completion and thanks so much for everything you have done. Blessings. john."
"Wow... To those of you reading this, I promise I did not pay the member to say such sweet things! Lol. Member, it was a pleasure working for you and I totally look forward to seeing it with the Glass installed. I also want to mention that if anyone is interested in a killer free standing tub, give me a call... Thanks again for the work. Peace Love and Tile. John Gaskill."
Pictures on request.
"and once we get that kitchen painted you will once again have a Little New York down South. LOL. What a great time I had making that tile happen. It was a joy being in your home and you know that know matter what you need, I will make myself available. The work did turn out great and it was a pleasure doing business with the both of you... Many happy wishes. John."
I emailed a request for quote to 2 companies. John Gaskill of Two Guys Tile & Design responded by phone within 2 hours. John was polite, friendly and personable on the phone and we scheduled a mutually convenient day and time for him to come by my house. Since I wanted to get the project started as soon as possible, I was happy that John was willing to drive across town the very next Saturday afternoon to meet with me. He confirmed the appointment on Saturday morning and again later on as he was leaving his prior appointment, giving me his ETA. John arrived on time and following his inspection of the job site, we discussed materials, suppliers, scheduling and costs. John understood exactly the look I wanted to achieve and suggested a couple of options in materials. He was very pleasant and I felt comfortable with him, a critical element any time I hire someone to work inside my home. We reached agreement on the cost of the work and the date for the work to be performed (actually, 2 days of work with completion on a Saturday so that I would only have to take one day off from my job). John drew up a contract on the spot and provided me with list of the materials and quantities he would need. When I encountered a delay in receiving the materials, John was very cooperative in re-scheduling.
When John arrived to start the job, he very patiently and kindly explained that I had purchased the wrong type of trim for my application. I thought that meant another delay, but he called a local supplier and arranged for the correct trim to be ready for me to pick up while he started setting up his equipment. I'm a bit of a DIYer and John indulged my questions and constant observation as he worked. He included me in all the design decisions as they arose, explaining the options and demonstrating the different layouts so that I could get a better idea of the finished effect. He worked steadily and quickly, but took time as needed to make adjustments to satisfy his artistic sense and mine. He was considerate of my home and property and even reassured me when he knew the job was about to get a little messy (and he was right - grouting is messy but cleans up easily). He left my home neat and clean on both days. He finished when he said he would, shook my hand and left me to admire the pretty new backsplash he created in my kitchen. It's exactly what I wanted and I am thrilled! I would not hesitate to call on John again for future work and recommend him with confidence.
"It was an absolute pleasure to have worked for you. You are an awesome person whom appreciates what it takes to do a job right. I felt comfortable in your home and that is sooooooooooooo important. I was able to give you the best I had. I look forward to your upcoming projects and only hope that my next clients are as special as you... Bless you in your future endeavors. Peace, Love and Tile, John Gaskill."
John kindly took on the responsibility of helping me with design choices including choosing tile based on my design/color and price criteria and bringing me samples to approve. I approved his first sample! He also used his experience and artist's eye to suggest a pattern layout that I was thrilled with.
John kept me well informed during the entire project of what was happening... before, during and after each phase of the project. The project ran smoothly with the exception of some delays due to unexpected family medical circumstances beyond his control. I did not have a problem allowing John the time to deal with his children's medical issues while his wife was out of town, but John was quite mortified that he wouldn't be able to complete the project by the specified date . It bothered him so much that he offered to re-install the shower door for me gratis. He and his assistant spent three hours accomplishing this AT NO CHARGE, and they did an excellent job.
"I miss you soooooo much! lol. I hope you are doing fine and honestly your words were more than kind... I know you have had alot on your plate and my only wish is that you find true happiness. Thanks so much for the work and if there is ANYTHING I can do to serve you in the future, do not hesitate to let me know. Blessings your way... John"
