got a call the day before to confirm, they also narrowed time to 1-3 pm.
at 1:45 they called said it'd be an hour, showed at 3
got to new location in reasonable time unloaded
nice guys, worked quick and careful
The guys arrived on time and worked hard only taking a short lunch break. They were very careful with and wrapped our furniture. They had quite a time moving our very heavy credenza up to the 2nd floor office area at our new townhome; but they did it without any damage to the credenza or our stairway, walls or ceilings.
I was extremely pleased with them and would use them again without qualification; and have recommended them to friends.
This is an example of one bad apple spoiling the whole moving experience for us, The days that the house was packed went smoothly and professionally. The team worked well together and I had no concerns. I was taken aback, however, when one of the five men asked to use the bathroom as soon as he arrived and when I agreed, really stunk up the place. I let that go and then later in the day my daughter showed me her bathroom where someone had defecated in her toilet and not flushed - unpleasant but I let that go too. It was very hot and the work was difficult. The men left, we gave them a good tip and the contents of our freezer.
An inspector for the buyers was in the house checking on repairs and came to me asking why all three doors were locked on a jack and jill bathroom upstairs and the fan was on. I had no idea and popped the lock to check what had happened. I will never forget the scene. The toilet was full to overflowing with feces, my daughters monogrammed towels had been used in attempt to mop up some of the disgusting mess and a waste basket had also been bought into service as a scoop. Someone had been unable to flush and just left it for me to clean up.
My husband and I were disgusted and immediately called the company. They were extremely apologetic and promised to find the culprit. I said I did not want the same men to unload our furniture and expected a discount. They agreed to this.
The unload went very well with a hand picked top team of men who shared their disgust at what had happened. However, the owner decided that the 10% discount we had already received from an Angies List coupon was enough and refused any more compensation saying" I should put it on the claim form". I find it hard to see how I can claim disgust and shock at having to clean up someone else's bathroom wastes.
I am sorry to write a bad review of a company that had good men in general that worked hard but a good company should compensate clients for the mistakes of it's employees and I didn't feel that I was treated fairly.
I have since recommended Matthews to two colleagues who also moved this summer. Both have has similar great experiences. If you are moving in the Charlotte area, these are the guys to use. I will definitely use them again.
hard working movers themselves. Would highly recommend them!
As the two workers were bringing items in one of them told me how a piece above one of the mirrors looks like it broke off. Upon looking at it we both agreed that it was probably something that had been broken previously and was glued back on at some point. He asked me if I wanted him to use gorilla glue to glue it back on and I told him no. I said that we would take care of it. He handed me the piece that broke and did not glue it. About 30 minutes later, all of the pieces were moved into my home and the men were upstairs putting the beds together. Suddenly there is a very loud crashing sound. I called up to them to ask what happened and they did not answer. So I walked upstairs to see for myself. When I got up there they told me that the headboard of the bed fell over and showed me a small 7-8" piece that cracked off of the back side of it. I told him to set it aside. While I was not happy, I was VERY understanding because mistakes can happened. He explained that we go through the claim process to deal with it.
Shortly after they finished putting the bed together, putting the mirrors on the dresser and vanity they moved on to put the next bed together downstairs. As they were doing that I went upstairs to check that everything was in place. When I got up there I was astonished to see this yellow foaming glue seeping out of the top section of the entire headboard! Unfortunately, what the worker told me happened when the headboard fell (that just a small piece cracked off) was not the truth. He failed to mention that the entire top of the headboard broke off. And, when I originally came to ask what happened, he was hiding it from me. How's that for integrity!
Thank goodness I went up there when I did because the glue (that was a foaming mess) had not completely dried. If it had, it would have been nearly impossible to (A) get the broken piece off and put back on the correct way and (B) get they yellow foaming glue off of the bed. When I told the worker that this glue had to be taken off of the bed immediately or else it would ruin the bed he worked very hard to get it off with me. He knew at this point that he screwed up. When I asked him what he used he pulled a small travel size bottle of Gorilla glue out of his pocket. Nice, the man travels with Gorilla glue in his pocket. I guess it's a trick of the trade. As noted earlier, I had already told him that I did NOT want him to glue a piece back together, why would I have felt any different about it now! We were able to take the two pieces apart and feverishly scrubbed the glue off of the wood. It did not all come off, but at least most of the glue that was showing came off.
They finished putting everything together, told me how to handle the claim process and left (without a tip - just for the record). Later that evening as I was making the second bed downstairs, low and behold, guess what I found? More Gorilla glue! Yep, apparently they had crack a piece off of the footboard of this bed, glued it back together and never told me about it (and I did not see it while they were here because this side of the bed was pushed up against the wall ). Since I did not see it until that evening, it was completely dry with a yellow hard foam all around the post. I called the company at 9pm and left a message.
At 8am the next morning I called the company and told them of the situation. While the individual that I spoke with told me that the workers are not supposed to try and fix anything, he was not very apologetic either. He quickly passed me on to the individual who deals with claims. The only reason why I did not give this company an F grade is because after all of this happened, they did handle this situation appropriately (for the most part). They had a separate crew come and pick up the damaged pieces and brought them to a repair company that deals with antiques. I was very clear on my expectations at this point and they were willing to oblige. Unfortunately the repairs took almost 2 weeks to complete and my kids did not have beds for a while. I had to call the repair company to move the process along. Once they completed the work, I then had to call Matthews Moving to get them to pick up the pieces and deliver them. It should not have taken that much hand holding on my part. However, the damages were fixed (of course it is not exactly in the condition that it was in before being moved, but it is close).
I am grateful that Matthews Moving fixed the problem, but I will not use them again, nor can I recommend them. You are only as good as the crews you send out. The lead of this 2 man crew told me that he has been with the company for 14 years (the other individual had been in the business for 25 years, but I don't know how long he was with Matthews Moving). I do not believe this is the first time this has occurred. He clearly had learned to travel with a small bottle of Gorilla Glue in his pocket. Integrity is a big deal. These two gentlemen did not have any integrity and that affects Matthew's Moving's reputation as a business. It is also very unfortunate that these beautiful antiques could survive the Civil War, but barely made it through a weekend with Matthews Moving.
