"Thank you [Member Name Removed] for taking the time needed to leave us a review here on Angie's List. Your comments are appreciated and we agree - there is always room for improvement and we continue to strive 4 straight A's!"
It went very well. Matching my engineered hardwood flooring that was put down 8 years ago was not easy. The representative did not hesitate to go continue a search until he found an almost perfect match. The installers are most important as well. They opened a box of hardwood that was defective and showed it to me before installing. We agreed it was not acceptable and the representative had the distributor come out and look at the hardwood and reorder another lot. If the installers had not been professionals they would have installed it anyway. Both the company and installers wanted to make sure I was pleased with product and finished installation.
All other installed flooring in bathroom, sunroom and kitchem went well and looks very good. I am most pleased with the finished flooring. Good Job by Hughes.
The work completed had no major issues but was not entirely what I had envisioned. For example,
- Laminate intsalled in the kitchen had a small scratch.
- Trim used was standard quarter round though I had asked for thinner trim. Installer then provided explanation that thinner trim could not be used because of gap size required between laminate and wall to allow laminate to expand.
- Toilet in guest bathroom was not re-installed after laminate job because an actual plumber was required. Hughes took $50 off my invoice for that, though the actual plumber ended up costing me $200 for the toilet + $75 to fix the sink which was leaking.
- Stairs. I dislike my stairs so much that I actually want to re-do them. The stair noses lie on top of the tread plane such that there is an edge/bump on each stair. That is, the tread depth is made up of 6.5 inches laminate + 2.5 inches elevated nose. Also, each stair nose has 3-4 small dents across its length showing where the nails were put in. The stairs I envisions had a smooth and flat transition between tread and noce, no edges, no dents, just a single smooth surface on each tread.
The stairs probably were a misunderstanding. I could have never imagined that they turn out that way. IF I would have known goin in THEN I would have made sure to specify in my request for quote.
For the furture, I would also recommend that Hughes inform their customers of just how dusty and dirty EVERYTHING will get, Especially since Hughes is not covering things up.
"the member and Rodney did have some communication barriers but the work was done has she specified. The stairs in question was brought to her attention that it would not look as good as true treads but due to finiancial issues she chose to go with the laminate treads. We are sorry that she is not satisfied with her stairs but her budget dictated our choices in materials. We look forward to working with her again in the future."
"It is very unfortunate that we are having to respond to this review. (removed member name) called our store to inquire about laminate flooring. Our sales representative met with her and set up an appointment for a free home measurement. At the time of the in home meeting our sales representative gave (removed member name) an estimate on the material and installation. (removed member name) said she wanted a better price and asked for our salesperson to re-review the estimate. Our salesperson said that the price was already discounted and there was no more savings we could offer. (removed member name) came into our store again several months later looking for a different selection of flooring. The same sale representative worked with her to come up with a product within her budget. She could not make a decision on a color so our representative ordered a carton of each color, at our expense, so she could see it first hand. This was going to be a full service sale, installation and material. (removed member name) returned to our store and laid out the two colors side by side and made her choice. At that point she told our sales representative that she found the product online and hired her own installer and that she would not need our services. Our sales representative explained the pluses and minuses of ordering online and that we have been very attentive to her wants and needs and she chose to order the flooring material from us on a cash and carry basis and her installer would install the product. No mention of an Angie's List Coupons was ever made. The product arrived and was picked up by her installer. (removed member name) called and said that the material had a residue on the ends of the boards. (removed member name) then started demanding that the floor be replace immediately. We informed (removed member name) that Hughes Floor Covering does not manufacture the product and we contacted our dealer while she was in our store. The Manufacturer asked if the residue could be cleaned off. We tried to remove the residue ourselves and it would come off but with much difficulty. We suggested the Manufacturer replace the product. (removed member name) was told it would take 2 weeks to get her replacement but she could get a full refund or pick out another floor. She refused and wanted to wait on the replacement. The manufacturer came back and said all the product in their warehouse and in production had a defective and again asked her to pick out another flooring. (removed member name) selected another flooring, it was delivered to her home by Hughes Floor Covering at no cost. We felt she needed compensation for her inconveniences due the Manufacture's Defect so Hughes Floor Covering wrote her a check to show that we understand the frustration she experienced. As retailers we understand that the consumer has a right to review our service but the story that needs to be told should represent both sides of the situation. A review should not be a weapon for frustrations that were caused for unforeseen matters. We felt we handled the situation to the best of our ability and worked diligently with our manufacturer to come up with a solution that worked to the advantage of the customer. Roy R. "Dear [Member Name], Thanks for your response after I visited your home and per my email that there is no problem with the installation of the flooring that the squeaking is from the sub floor, and that when we were in the area that I would have a installer to look at the situation and suggest a solution to correct the squeaking and let you know what the cost would be. Please call me directly if you would like to move forward Thank you, Ray Rushing"
We were also concerned about laying carpet in the bonus room which had a pool table. This was not a problem for Hughes and their installers.
My only negative comment about Hughes is that they do not put prices on their samples. Having previous experience with Mohawk "Smart Strand" carpet, I know that is what I really wanted. We picked out a beautiful patterned piece. Rodney came and measured the space and called a few days later with the "bad" news--we actually needed more carpet than we thought, and the "match" on the carpet meant there would be significant waste so the price was higher than we expected or had budgeted for. Rodney selected some other carpets for us to consider which would save several hundred dollars, but I did not like them nearly as much as my original choice. He did "work" on the numbers and was able to save us a couple of hundred by adjusting the pad we used and some other adjustments.
Installation could not have gone better. There was a crew of 5 or 6 men who arrived right on time. They moved furniture out of each room as the carpet was laid and then placed everything back exactly where we wanted it. The carpet is beautiful! After installation we did have a small issue on the steps where the carpet was not "tucked in" fully. I contacted the store and they had the original installer stop over the next day. He was able to easily fix the issue with a "staple" which I was concerned with, but is totally invisible.
I would highly recommend Hughes carpet to others looking for a quality carpeting product and installation.
Will definately use Hughes again. They were recommended by a neighbor and we highly recommend. And - they honored my Angie's list coupon!
The first crew from Hughes did an excellent job installing the laminate flooring in my kitchen and laundry room. The quality of the product and the workmanship was excellent. The crew kept me well informed throughout the job. They were professional and I would gladly welcome them into my home again.
The second crew from Hughes installed carpet in five rooms and the hall upstairs. Again, the quality of the product was excellent. The workmanship in the bedrooms was also excellent. In the rec room, the carpet was pieced multiple times in the dormer area. It also appears that one piece in the dormer doesn't match exactly. When the job was done, I was given the excess carpet from the bedrooms, but there was not even a small piece of carpet from the rec room available for a sample. I later found what appears to be a small burn on the rec room carpet.
Although one of the four installers on the second crew was professional and demonstrated interest in pleasing the customer, others did not represent the company well. The crew chief made comments about the Hughes family business operation that were not appropriate to be shared with me, a customer. He also had a disagreement with me about the movement of furniture and damage to a desk drawer. (A simple adjustment to the drawer made by one of the other installers corrected that problem.) I was not concerned that there was a disagreement, but I found the way it was handled to be inappropriate. This same installer had a disagreement with the other members of the crew and left the job early on day one. A third installer smoked outside while working with the carpet. There were other lesser issues.
I felt an obligation to share my experience with the business owner. After making an appointment, I met with him and my salesperson for more than an hour on July 25. I shared everything shared here and more. The salesperson made a followup visit to my home and satisfied several of my installation related concerns. No action was taken with regard to the carpet in the dormers or the carpet that appeared to have a small burn.
I have done business with Hughes in the past and was extremely happy with all aspects of the experience. This time, I was happy with the sales experience and the quality of the product. Unfortunately, I would not use this provider again because of my experience with the carpet installation crew.
