We met Robert when we invited ourselves into a property that was undergoing renovation that he'd designed. From the get-go our relationship was positive, dynamic and creative. As a working artist/designer myself, I have many (strong) opinions on what I want and what it should look like. Robert guided us through our major renovation project with ease. He thoughtfully listened to our requests, respectfully offering advice and recommendations to make better use of space, resources and budget. His guidance was invaluable and his design sense superb! We opted to split our renovation into two phases to be able to test out our newly opened spaces before modifying our roofline and we're glad we did. Our phase one included gutting a section of the house, opening walls and adding windows. Robert's artistic rendering of the future look of our house was exciting from the beginning but having lived in the open space for six months now, we know there are some things we will change from the original design. Robert has been flexible with us and "gets it" immediately when I propose something new. His new sketches are even more exciting than the originals and we can't wait to get to phase II! Throughout the design and construction process Robert made himself available to us and to our contractor so any unexpected surprises were dealt with seamlessly and we avoided unnecessary delays. He was a valuable liaison between contractor, engineer and inspector when needed. I would highly recommend Robert Hess for any residential renovation, remodel or original build design.

Robert Hess is a freelance architect referred to me by a friend. We had actually had a relative draw a plan for us but just felt it wasn't on the mark of what we wanted and put off the project for a while. We couldn't find what we wanted in plan books. Robert was referred to us so we met with him and he "got" the concept of what we were after right away. In no time he had a rough sketch that we loved, so we contracted with him to provide the drawings for our house. He worked quickly and met with us numerous times at convenient times for us to work through details and changes. He never seemed to get upset when we would ask for a change. Well into the planning we actually decided on a pretty big change which he handled without scolding us and the plans worked out just like we wanted. We are well underway in building the home and really love the way the details are working out - most of which were suggested by Robert. His price is fair because he doesn't have a big office and overhead. He is very personable and easy going, honest and fair. I would highly recommend him for something as large as a new home plan to a small remodeling job. He is a pleasure to work with, is so creative and has helped me with all kinds of decisions regarding the details of the house construction (of which I am learning there are MANY!).
