Jun 2012
I was in the market for a solar powered attic fan to cool off the attic of my two story colonial type house. I researched not just a number of companies, but a number of solar powered fans as well. I settled on a Attic Breeze fan because it carried the best warranty, was constructed of the best materials, and I liked the look of it, over other models I viewed. The Attic Breeze website pointed me to a local installer in my area, Essential Energy Group. From my first call to Essential Energy, I was speaking with Michael Peterson, a principle in the company, not a secretary or sales man. Mr. Peterson is very knowledgeable in the green solar power field. He explained the fan, what it would do, what it won't do, and how it could help in my specific situation. We set up a time to install, and it took about an hour to an hour and a half. Upon leaving, Mr. Peterson also went over the folder of documents he gave me. In this folder was an invoice, warranty, and the manufacturer's certificate statement for the Residential Federal Tax Credit. Also in the folder were all the applicable tax forms that I would need to file for credit when I do my taxes next year. Solar powered attic fans, at least in 2012, carry a 30% Federal tax credit, and a 35% North Carolina tax credit.
Simple math will tell you that the $791 I spent to buy the fan and have it installed, can be thought of as an expense of $276, after I take the 65% tax credits. I will probably make that amount back this summer with lower air conditioning bills.
I couldn't have been happier with the experience, and I'm already seeing the benefits of the fan, just in the amount of time the air conditioner has to run.
