I won't use them or give them a better rating because when I asked on the 3rd trip out when I was told they would need to replace, through the warranty, the heat exchanger I was never told that there was additional labor and cost. When they called they said they had it fixed and I was good to go. Then I got the invoice via email and it was $1194. I was floored. When I called they simply said - sorry that was the labor - there is nothing we can do.
To go from expecting a little over $400 to almost $1200 was a shock. I won't use them again even though they did do good work the price shock was not a good experience. At least they let me split it up. $600 paid, $600 to go.
I then paid him the $99 fee and he said he would send an estimate for a new unit the next day.
Seeing as a new gas pack is anywhere from $5-10k I decided to get a second opinion. The other company came out promptly and did a thorough inspection. The result was that the heat exchange is in like-new condition and absolutely no cracks. The unit is safe, in good working condition and should last for years. This company was even able to sand off a little rust on the limit switches and charged me for nothing.
I then contacted Air Maxx to let them know what happened and that I was highly disappointed. They responded promptly via email that they take these situations very seriously and would make it right. The next morning one of the owners came out to verify the technician's findings. The owner verified that the OTHER company was right and that there is no reason to replace the gas pack. I couldn't believe that this could have potentially cost me THOUSANDS and I asked for some kind of explanation. The explanation I was given was that the technician is "new and over-reacted". I do not think it is acceptable for a company to send out techs that are not trained properly.
Needless to say, I will not be utilizing Air Maxx in the future (even though the owner took a few pieces of my gas pack with him) and I even had to ask for the $99 refund (they did not offer) since they technically didn't perform any services and I was told inaccurate findings. I was told that a refund was issued on 9/25 but as of today, I still have not received. I will update when/if I receive it. Received refund 10/1.
"My name is Phillip Bowen and I am a co-owner of Air Maxx of Charlotte, Inc. I feel the need to respond to the allegations posted here and on other websites about the honesty/ integrity of our company by Ms. [Member name removed]. I have been in this business for 25+ years and owned my own company for the past 15 years. That being said, my service technician made a mistake and misdiagnosed a cracked/ faulty heat exchanger. Ms. [Member name removed] had a second opinion that said there was no crack. I went back immediately, and confirmed this to be the case. This is the first year in the field for my service technician and he made a mistake. We all had to start our respective careers at some point and were a little inexperienced in our fields and made some mistakes. This confirms that we are all human. This however, should not define us as incompetent or dishonest in any way. (The technician that misdiagnosed Ms. [Member name removed] unit has successfully serviced a few hundred homes in the year that he has been with us.) Our technician shut off the gas to Ms. [Member name removed] system, not as a scare tactic but in the best interest of our customer. If we find a cracked/ faulty heat exchanger, it is our moral/ legal obligation to shut off the gas as a faulty heat exchanger has the real potential to cause serious injury even death and we take this responsibility very, very seriously. Granted he made a misdiagnosis on the heat exchanger, but that is what second opinions are for and we highly recommend that everyone gets a second opinion for a diagnosis of this nature. As a result of this incident we have made an internal policy change to make sure this does not happen again. We made the decision immediately to give Ms. [Member name removed] a full refund. She did not have to ask, but did bring it up in conversation before we had a chance to finish discussing it. Our employees are not on a commission based salary and have no incentive to sell unnecessary services and we sincerely believe that our tech was acting in the best interest of the customer. Again, this is a very unfortunate but isolated incident and we are sorry for any inconveniences incurred by Ms. [Member name removed]. Our responses to Ms. [Member name removed] concerns have been swift, genuine and professional."
Any problems we have had with the HVAC system were covered under warranty and promptly fixed with no hassle or paperwork.
