84 LUMBER

I used 84 at the suggestion of a friend as he said they had good prices and good quality lumber.  I requested a quote using 84 Lumber's website.  I did not hear back promptly so I phoned the next day and made my request by phone.  By the time my lumber had already been delivered, they got back to me with the web quote - that was a poor, slow response as far as the web experience.  Use the phone for better results.  They quoted me their retail price for the lumber, which was more expensive than I could get at other home improvement centers.  I mentioned the other stores' prices and 84 lowered their price giving me the "contractor price" which was competitive but not a major discount.  Ask for the contractor price.  Their delivery fee was reasonable - $55.  I had asked if they could send a small forklift (again at the suggestion of my friend).  They said they could not do that, which I understood.  The lumber was delivered from the back of a flatbed truck.  The truck was heavy, so they could not deliver my lumber to my work site (my backyard) - again, understandable.  The problem was that my product was on the top of a badly planned delivery.  It's customary for them to slide this kind of order off the truck dump truck style, but with other items in the load the delivery man was afraid to do that.  So he pushed each piece of lumber off the truck one at a time from full height.  My lumber was scarred due to corners of boards impacting sides of boards.  Fortunately, aesthetics are not important for this project.  I do NOT recommend this company for a small order of timbers for a project where the appearance of the wood is important!!  I requested the delivery fee back and was told they could not do that.  They offered to let me bring back any pieces I'm not satisfied with and exchange them, but I needed delivery because I don't have the vehicle to do that!  They're friendly and they mean well, but not a company concerned with attention to detail!  Think twice!

We dealt with Ian Edwards. He told us he could beat other home improvement stores on prices. We had a lumber list and had specific windows picked out. We submitted the list to all three companies, and 84 Lumber beat them in price. Ian was excellent in customer service. He always returned calls, helped us with any concerns or questions, and even called my father long distance to clarify info on the list (my dad is the one who did the structural work).
