Description of Work: Let's start here: I love, and respect, trees. Despite this, or because of this, depending on your beliefs about tree thinning and tree/human coexistence, I feel I need to start here because it's about killing trees. And on that score, I tend to lean toward giving the tree the benefit of the doubt. If a human is so myopic as to encroach on a stately tree with a building or a bulldozer, I say the human should back off and relocate. | |That said, I've also spent a lot of time in the past several decades wielding chain saws and wood splitters on fallen timber, "widow makers" and other tree-related conundrums. I built a beautiful log barn for our donkeys from timber on my woodland in Michigan before moving to NC more than 25 years ago. Here in NC, we live on wooded acreage in the rural buffer between Durham and Chapel Hill, and heat our home primarily with a wood stove. So suffice it to say I've probably dropped, sawed and split more timber than most folks. My wife and I joke (kinda) that we don't belong to a gym because our workout is splitting, moving, stacking and re-stacking our firewood. The ultimate benefit, of course, is that we have not only a shared outdoor exercise experience, but also an efficient wood stove making our home warm and wonderful. Nowadays, we mostly split and burn lumberyard scrap slabs of oak, hickory and other hardwoods. | |But when it came time to deal with a big white oak encroaching on our house roof, my wife easily convinced me that we needed professional help. In all my years of chain sawing, I was by now too old and too smart to tackle the task of removing this threatening house cruncher myself. So I called Bruce Paden, aka The Arborist. I knew from earlier experience with him and other tree services that there are cheaper options for this kind of work, and we'd even tried one of them. But we had no interest in re-joining the dialogue with friends who'd also tried jackleg tree guys to save money with laughable and disappointing (so far, fortunately, we haven't heard of tragic) results. Paden is a real-life arborist. He knows trees. And he hires people who share his vision. We like that. | |When we called, they showed up within days, as scheduled, scoped the project, gave the price, and we made the contract. The three-man crew, which included Paden, showed up when agreed (about a month after the initial visit - these guys are busy, which is a good sign). | |When they came, I took the afternoon off work to come home and observe. Amazing. They use top-line equipment, communicate in their own "tree" lingo, watch carefully for safety of climber and property, do the diligence. They whittled down that tall oak with ropes and saws and finesse without dinging our fence or roof below and cut it into firewood lengths, piled it as agreed, and left the place looking even better than expected. They'd also cut a big fallen oak into fireplace lengths as requested, even before I got home. | |It don't get better, folks. Two things I offer with confidence: First, you can find cheaper tree whackers; and second, you can't find better professionals than The Arborist if you give a rip about trees in general, your roof/landscaping/fence in particular, and professional tree service/advice overall. And I promise, we have no other connection with Bruce or anybody in his company. We just appreciate this level of professionalism in any service we hire. These guys bring it in spades (or, more specifically, chainsaws and ropes). |
