Will and Rick are great to work with. We had very specific out-of-the-box ideas. They had a wonderful can-do attitude and were great at trouble-shooting and problem solving. They executed our vision beautifully. We couldn't be happier with the results!

Everything done extremely well, on schedule and as quoted. We are extremely pleased. Will and Rick and their associates were very professional and did craftmanship quality work.

After interviewing several contractors, we selected Chapel Hill Construction to remove the upper deck on our house and replace it with a screened porch. We were impressed with the straight-forward pricing structure that the company uses and their willingness to integrate the porch's design with the rest of our house. The project went very smoothly. Will and Rick were always responsive to our inquiries and requests. The price for the porch did not change from what we agreed to originally. This porch is now the showcase of our house. We would highly recommend Chapel Hill Construction to do your home additions.

Working with Chapel Hill Construction has been an excellent experience.
I first contacted them in regards to a screened in porch project. Unlike the other companies that came out for estimates, Rick was the only one that brought samples of the materials. And as part of my assessment of their quality of work, I was taken on a porch tour to see real examples of the work they have done. This was a great way to view their work and actually talk to other customers of theirs face to face.
As part of the preliminary discussions, Rick and Will both had good suggestions for improving what I wanted to see. One of the best parts of the quoting process with them is that you can see exactly what each line item costs So, if you want to add additional lights or add an additional feature such as a fireplace / ceiling bead board, you can see that on the quote sheet and figure out your estimates after the initial meetings. This is exactly what I did and found that I could make changes and determine the cost without having it "hidden" from me and thus needing to call them. One of the key selling points for me as well is that once you are quoted a price and sign the contract, THAT IS THE PRICE. It will not jump up on you etc... so if there is an issue and more material is needed or something else happens that could change the cost, your price stays the same with them. I had a few changes after the initial contract was signed and thus had a separate contract for those changes. You can easily track what is agreed to and the associated costs. I never felt like something was being hidden from me or that an unseen future cost would "get me" later on. To me, this is really important and truly shows that these guys are upfront and honest. I firmly believe their pricing is on par with the other companies and to be honest, the up front view of the costs is a big advantage. With other estimates I received, i didn't know how much was for the lighting, the footage, etc... You know all of that right in the estimate with Chapel Hill Construction. Some estimates were higher than Chapel Hill Construction, but I don't think the quality would have matched to what I received. Chapel Hill Construction delivered as promised.
One of the other things that I truly liked about this company is that they will give suggestions and recommendations. I found that their inputs were actually very helpful, and I implemented over 1/2 of what was discussed. In particular, I had french doors installed into the porch and think that was the BEST decision I made. And I can thank Will and Rick for that input! That never crossed my mind as being possible until they mentioned it. And they also helped design the shape of the retaining wall so that it wasn't a boring straight line. They truly work for you to ensure the aesthetics are right and the quality of work is excellent.
One of my key requirements for the projects I've done is that I only talk to one contact point. I don't want to have to arrange for different contractors to come in and out of my house etc... Chapel Hill Construction took that pain and nuisance off of my shoulders and ensured that the work would be done on schedule as promised. And to be honest, they went above and beyond on some issues that came up during the permitting process. If I had to handle some of the things that they did, I probably wouldn't have a screened-in porch right now. They did a geat job balancing what Orange County wanted as well as the Town of Hillsborough.
After the porch/deck/patio was finished, I ended up having a few other projects with Chapel Hill Construction. I had hardwoods installed through the whole house as well as carpet replaced in the bedrooms. There was a minor cutting issue with the master bedroom carpet, and new carpet had to be ordered. I did not incur any additional cost as Chapel Hill Construction absorbed that. This is a good example of how they stand by their word and the cost does not go up even when there is a problem. As for the hardwoods, they look fabulous! I have a stone fireplace in my living room and the way the hardwoods cut into it, you would never know that the hardwoods hadn't been there all along (replaced the old carpet). Excellent job.
The other significant project I had done was a completely new kitchen installed along with recessed lighting in both the kitchen and living room. Rick helped me redesign the kitchen and had great ideas for making it more efficient with a layout that made sense. They were given strict insructions as to what needed to be accomplished as I traveled for work. They met the agreed to deadlines as well as kept me informed of the progress through pictures and emails. And in fact, they are excellent with communication in general. After our meetings, either myself or Will would document what was discussed to ensure that both parties walked away with the same understanding and agreements. Communication is easy with this company as you can either email or call. It's pretty rare not to get a same day response from them.
They had great ideas for the under cabinet lighting as well as the backsplash tiling work that I had done. I never would have thought of running the tile up to the ceiling over the sink area. Once that suggestion was out there, it made total sense to me, and it looks beautiful now!
Next up on my list of projects is the master bathroom renovation. Chapel Hill Construction will be called for that work based on the successful projects they have completed for me over the last 2yrs.
I do not hesitate to recommend these guys due to all of the successful work they have completed for me. Each project has been successfully installed on budget and on time.
Highly recommended.

High quality construction. The product is comparable to porches found on $ 1M plus homes. Baseline pricing established at project start and maintained. Project change orders priced fairly. We did experience occasional project delays, primarily due to weather and scheduling conflicts. That said, we are extremely happy with the finished product and use it upwards of 300 days a year.

What a total nightmare we had with this contractor. We wanted a new deck for an and quot;at homeand quot; wedding for our daughter. Unfortunately for us we hired Chapel Hill Construction. Fortunately we negotiated a good contract with about 25% of the price held back until the project was properly completed.
As the project progressed we were not happy with the quality of the work, and we communicated that fact to the owner of Chapel Hill Construction, Rick Malucci, and his project manager, but no corrective actions were undertaken. We also became very concerned when it became clear that they would not meet the completion date stated in our contract. We needed the new deck for the wedding that we planned.
We requested a meeting with Rick and his project manager about two or three weeks before the wedding date, and we again expressed concern about the schedule and the quality of their work. A few days later they showed up at our front door demanding payment even though they had not completed the project. We declined to pay them. Without our knowledge they responded by removing a large section of the new railing from our deck and taking it away. To make a long story short, they removed the railing in an attempt to pressure us into paying them for an incomplete and poorly constructed deck.
We filed a police report about their theft of the railing section, and they sued us for nonpayment. After several months of legal wrangling they dropped their lawsuit, and we hired a competent contractor to redo the deck. The quality was so poor that we had to have the deck completely removed and redone.
Needless to say, we will never use Chapel Hill Construction again.
The wedding was a big success, and my wife did a wonderful job filling the gap in the railing with an assortment of potted trees and flowers. Most of our guests did not even notice that a section of railing was missing.

Response from Chapel Hill Construction
"Chapel Hill construction completed a whole house remodel for the family in 2006. There was a significant discount given because other customer was a relative of a close family friend, he also had a very tight budget. There was approximately an $8000 work complete payment due upon completion which Bob refused to pay. Although there were no complaints throughout the project. A year later, other customer called me because there was some unfortunate, but easily repaired drywall tape separation in his ceiling. The other member asked if we warranty our work. Because I did not receive full payment on the completed work, I denied other customers request. This type of repair is typical and easily repaired. Under normal circumstances it is warrenteed. the other customer chose to post these comments 6 years after the work was completed. If anyone would like further clarification on this matter, please contact me at [email protected]."

Will and Rick of Chapel Hill Construction were great to work with. They provided a detailed estimate and gave me the feeling that they knew what needed to be done and would have skilled people to do the work. They committed to a schedule and the crew arrived on the day we agreed and began removing the old masonite siding. From the second day on, I noticed that the crew was not arriving very early and I mentioned this to Will. It also appeared that they were doing a poor job of framing the electrical service entrance box. I phoned Will and he immediately showed up at the house and inspected the work. It turned out that the subcontractor didn't have a crew experienced with hardie Plank installation available and had substituted other workers. Will terminated this subcontract and had a new crew on site the next day who knew exactly what to do. They redid the framing at the entrance panel made good progress from then on. In spite of one rain day with no work, Chapel Hill Construction got the job done on time with excellent results. The site was clean and ready for the painters on time.
This was the first time I had used a contractor rather than dealing directly with a company who would directly do the work with their own people. This was in part due to the fact that I didn't know how much electrical work would be required or how to coordinate an electrician with a siding company. Considering the problem Will had with the first subcontractor, I was glad I had decided to engage Chapel Hill Construction to deal with the subcontractors. I would definitely recommend Chapel Hill Construction for similar work where multiple trades people are required.

Contract for replacement of decking on 18 Decks at townhouse complex. Contract was properly signed, stipulated first payment was made and check cashed. Chapel Hill Construction ordered and paid for the material, then they came to us asking for a new contract with different payment schedule. Since Chapel Hill Construction agreed to and signed the first contract we felt that it was not reasonable to re-write the contract. They were unwilling to continue under existing contract and they became very unprofessional, so we asked that they return all unused funds and release the purchased materials to us. They were not willing to do this. We had to hire a lawyer to get them to release the material and they kept all the funds that we had advanced for the job. Before Chapel Hill Construction decided that they wanted a new contract, they were very professional, but from that point on, they became very hard to deal with and uncooperative.
Response from Chapel Hill Construction
"Chapel Hill Construction was contracted by the customer's management company to perform the work described. A contract was drafted and signed. A payment was taken for the cost of materials which had to be special ordered. This was plainly written on the contract. CHC also gave a tentative project start date. Because the quantity of materials was so large, it had to be produced and shipped directly from the Trex factory, specifically for this job. Unfortunately Trex had a delay in production and was unable to deliver in time to meet the tentative start date. This was out of CHC’s hands and a great inconvenience. We had dedicated ourselves to the time line with sub contractors standing by. The customer was given as much advanced notice of the delay as possible. The customer was out raged by the news. He made several demands and threats. Demanding we start work immediately with no excuses. He threatened to slander us where ever possible. It was impossible to reason with or discuss the situation with Paul. As we were at an impasse, I asked to speak to the Home Owners Association to explain the delay. The customer refused the contact information. CHC was forced to source out the association on our own. We were very concerned about going forward with the work because of the already strained relationship. After a back and forth discussion and reassurance from the association, CHC agreed to conduct the work as originally contracted. This was within the shipping date and would not have caused any further delay. Paul hired a second contractor to complete the work and convinced the Association to terminate the contract and ask for their money back. Because of the differences, CHC let the association out of the contract. However, the funds had already been spent on materials and were non refundable. CHC agreed to have the materials delivered directly to the jobsite at no additional charge. Our business was concluded amicably."
