BACKGROUND for piano players, users, etc A spinet upright is a compact piano that is a cross between a musical instrument and a piece of furniture. The "harp" is in two pieces, as opposed to one large harp found in a standard upright or a grand piano. The hammers and dampers operate in an upright position (imagine a woodpecker on a side of a tree) as opposed to a lift / drop action. The strings are the original strings of a piano was manufactures in the early 60s or so. Piano strings, as do guitar strings or any strings for an instrument, have a useful life. These strings are getting a dull tone. It had not been tuned for 4 or 5 years. The piano was used only marginally ==> at Christmas time. One note in particular, the second A below middle C, would ring after being struck, and even worse, begin vibrating when it picked up "harmonics" from another key, or some chord. I intend to begin using the piano more and as a birthday present, my wife paid for the tuning. HOW IT WENT Summary: Mr Glasgow arrived on time, tuned the piano very satisfactorily, pitched to a tuning fork so the family could add guitars to the times we play together, fixed the ringing A in a cost effective manner and, once finished with the work, regaled us with excellent stories regarding pianos, our piano manufacturer and the sad state of piano manufacturing in the US in general. He also explained our options to rejuvinate the piano. Details: Mr. Glasgow tuned the piano. To my ear, it is in tune. He asked up front if it would be used with other instruments and tha tis when he took the challenge to get it in tune to the fork, not just to "itself." The repair to the reining A key was fixed in the following manner. The ringing was due to the fact that the A was a set of two, somewhat heavy, strings, not one. The strings appear to be a wire wound around another wire. If you replace one string, you need to replace both, as the new metal will sound different that the old. If you restring an upright spinet, the strings are usually custom made upon request as they are shorter, as the piano is compact. If you put in a new string, you need to have it tuned frequently for a number of months as a new string loses tuning. Mr. Glasgow altered how the damper pad / hammer worked. It is designed to fit in the center of two strings. He made it land more firmly on the single string. Trustworthiness: Mr Glasgow CLEARLY explained that the strings were old, that the tone is deteriorating and all of the difficulties and expenses of restringing. The net decision is this: if the instrument retires when I am done with the piano, it is not worth the expense of restringing, versus; if this is to stay in the family and someone gets it someday, restringing would do wonders, but is not cost effective. I Googled the piano and saw one in NYC for about $600. Mr Glasgow did not elaborate on cost (he was not selling the work) but I suspect it is 3 or 4 times the value of the piano. Would I have the piano tuned by Henry Glasgow again? Absolutely yes Note to Angie's List editors. This is my 2nd review. If you have any coaching pro/con please advise via email. Thank you
