Less than two months later, my check engine light came on again. I took it in for a routine service. My mechanic told me to take the car back to Alamance Muffler because the diagnostic test on the car, and it indicated that there was something wrong with the catalytic converter. When I took the car back to Alamance, they wouldn?t stand by their work. It was less than 60 days later, and they claimed they didn?t know if the manufacturer would cover it. They also indicated that my mechanic inserted the wrong spark plugs. However, I didn?t have the spark plugs changed. They basically just brushed it off.
Response from Alamance Muffler
"The member brought her car in on 4/8/10. She had a P0420, a catalytic converter efficiency code. We replaced the converter at that time. Then on 6/07/10 she returned and asked us to check the converter, the check engine light had came back on. She informed us that she had taken the car to another shop where they found a P1259 and the P0420 code according to their invoice, service work was done by this shop (see enclosed invoice) were they found the oil so low and dirty the engine had to be flushed. She then brought the vehicle back to us. When she arrived, we scanned her computer and had no codes showing. The repair facility must have cleared the codes. We then raised the vehicle to visually inspect the converter, we did notice discoloration of the outside shell from excessive heat. There are no moving parts inside a converter. It only has a honeycomb that the exhaust passes through. We then raised the hood to look for any obvious problems like vacuum leaks, unhooked wiring connection, etc. Then checked a spark plug to see if the correct/recommended parts were present and to determine if the engine needed any common maintenance items. At that time we saw nothing that could be determined as a failure on the catalytic converter's part and have yet to see the light on again. There has been no contact with her since 06/07/10, At the time of purchase we give all customer's who purchase a converter a short written summary of the reasons of a converter failure. We recommend a skilled technician evaluate the reason the original converter failed. If these problems are not addressed another converter failure is eminent, as we do not provide this service we recommend they take the vehicle to the technician of their choice. Customer's must understand as vehicles age and obtain upwards of 150,000 miles there are many wear factors and maintenance issues that come into play. If she is unhappy with our work we would welcome her to have her converter replaced elsewhere and return our converter to us for a full refund. This offer is good for 30 days from this date. Sincerely, Ty Sutton Alamance Mufflers 06/14/10"
