Bruce J. Burke Residential Construction

Bruce was very good at the first door repair. He also had very good help and the man cut the wood on the spot and repaired the doorJam and up above the door. This was all a good experience. Then this man that helped Bruce , the one who cut the wood on sight stopped working. Bruce is reliable and competent but he had to hire another younger man. The Job was too expensive because I had previously purchased the shingles. Bruce did "research" the "stressed skin Panels" for insulation, under the roof and he did a good job making sure he got it right, I hope. It was a "very expensive job. I do feel that Bruce got the roof right, but I also feel that he charged too much. The other guy quit, and the younger guy with was the "climber" the one who actually got on top of the roof......was just OK. I would not hire Bruce again because of this person. He didn't care, the younger guy and I didn't like him. He is the reason the job got out of control in expense. Because of Brue I don't think the roof and insulation was a "Botch Job" , I think Bruce did it right........and I will also find out as time goes on. There are jobs that are unfinished and I have paid all that I am going to pay. I had to have someone else finish the work that was promised. I feel the job was more expensive than it should have been , but I also feel that Bruce did the "roof and insulation" right. A fence was way over priced as it wasn't a fence but just some gates and one small "connection" , this part was way over what it should have been He also did a partial "Bulkhead" where some lawn had "caved after a Hurricane" and the bulkhead should have gone straight across as I had requested rather than n shaped as the next hurricane will "wash out lawn" under the steps inside the "u." I had a professional Bulkhead person tell me what to have Bruce do." Bruce did not do as I had asked pertaining to the bulkhead and I will have to clean up and haul in more dirt after the next storm because of this, but the bulkhead he did build is of good quality and so is the wood he used. Bruce Built some steps or replaced some steps and they are nice steps, and they were also expensive. "Lumbar" at the time was "up" and I'm sure this didn't help. After a Hurricane, the rip off's start.......in Lumbar Prices and downed Tree Prices among others. Bruce even though he didn't finish all of the things he was supposed to do, is still one of the "better" Contractors on the Island. He does have a conscience, and he is caring about his jobs and almost thorough. The person who quit or retired was good and this did not help the roofing and bulkhead situation. the younger, newer guy Bruce had to hire to help him is not consciencious (sp) , and not worth the money. He's careless and for this reason I would not hire Bruce again, because of this other person. Also, Bruce didn't complete all the tasks as promised......so I have paid all that I am going to pay as I have someone else to do them now. But he did complete the roof, and I feel that it was done correctly because he supervised it, and he did research the "paneling" under the roofing, so we will see how it holds up. I paid him around 15,000. dollars and the shingles were purchased ahead of time and were a little over 2000. Bruce and his original helper that worked on the door were a Great Team and did good work together. This younger person, doesn't care and just wants to get the job over and get his money. When something is expensive, like this--that attitude does not work. I would hire Bruce and the Original Person (woodworker) who retired after the door job again; but I would not Hire Bruce and this Younger , Careless man to do anything else. ******* In Reviewing this Review again after having some time to let the dust settle a couple years later, I realize that I was not as honest and straightforward as I should have been because I was "afraid." You have to be very careful what you write, because these people in Carteret County NC will "retaliate". They will do Horrible things to you if they get a bad review and you tell the Truth about your experience and about what actually really did take place. I have given Bruce what's his name , way too much Credit. This is his business and he was in Charge. He didn't research the stressed skin paneling as much as he printed out a pretty computer diagnostic, and way overcharged me by about 3000. The one thing I will say, in light of other work is that at least the work he did do seems to be good work. I also know that I have had several people in Wake County NC who have done superior work to his who have been "reasonable." No , I would never hire him again for not even to build a Trash Can Holder.

This contractor never got back with us with an estimate and didn't call or email why.

It has taken me ten years to find a great contractor. He is so good and very professional. He corrected a door that a previous handyman did not correctly install. Bruce along with 2 of his workers spent eight hours working on the door and the price was only $250.00 for labor and materials (copper, as well). He spent his time fixing the door and wanted to make sure that he did it right. He also took care of scraps that the first contractor left and hauled them away. He went out of his way to do his job and do it well. They were also efficient and took their time with every little thing that they did.
