I had Dr Stamatiades do 2 single-surface fillings.
The initial set of 18 x-rays at my initial exam in Nov was $140 for all 18. That comes to $7.78 each. When I needed an x-ray before doing the filling on one tooth, in late January, he charged $27 for the one x-ray, three times as much, and my insurance paid $22 out of of that amount. He said the insurance co required the x-ray before they would pay their portion of the filling. Makes sense. I also needed a second x-ray for another tooth and he also charged $27 for that also. It seems that most dentists charge much less per x-ray for an initial evaluation consisting of a full set of 18, than they charge per x-ray, for 1 or 2 x-rays at a later time.
He seemed to do a nice job on the fillings he did. His office seemed to know what the insurance company would pay for and not pay for and was willing to contact them to confirm things with them. In contrast, some dentists demand that you pay them up front, and deal with the insurance company yourself.
I sometimes found it difficult to understand his explanations of things. He offered to reword, in order to try and make things clearer, but it sometimes took a while before I understood what he was trying to communicate. At a later time he made a remark about how much time he spent explaining things - despite the fact that to me he sometimes seemed long-winded, offering explanations beyond what I had asked for. I discerned inconsistancies in his explanations which made me concerned about whether he was telling the truth all the time. In contrast, I found my last dentist where I used to live to be easier to understand and consistant. In short, his web site talks about what a good communictor he is, in addition to being a good dentist, but I have to say I don't agree. He does spend a lot of time on communication, but I don't think he does it as well as other dentists I have been to.
Because of the high cost of a scaling (before I had insurance), I chose to have this done at the local dental school, by a dental hygienist student, where they charged only $45.
When I needed my x-rays emailed to me, to forward to the dental school, his office was prompt about emailing them, and did not charge me for this.
"Hello again [member name removed]. I see you posted again for the same concern but just put in a different date for which you were not here in an attempt to try and lower our” A “rating (original review November 20, 2013). This is unfortunate because Angie’s List was supposed to be for honest people giving reviews to help other members get honest and true recommendations. Unfortunately, this is becoming more common on Angie’s list, and not just for the dental community, which has caused members that we know to rethink trusting the reviews on Angie’s list or just dropping their membership all together."
"Thank you for your response [member name removed], Initially, you were very polite to inquire about a $25 charge that your insurance company would not pay due to you meeting your max allocation for the year. We politely informed you of this. The doctor actually discounted your visit when you went over your appointment time by 30 min discussing your dental concerns and problems with your previous dentists. He should have charged for the additional time, but charged you the lesser fee, being sensitive to your budget concerns. When you then insisted that we waive the $25 charge your insurance would not pay or you would find another dentist, the doctor came up with two options for you. Option 1 was to be grateful for the discounted treatment already given by the doctor and continue a mutually respectful relationship with our practice. Option 2, the doctor would further discount your treatment by the $25 your insurance did not cover and you would agree to find another dentist since you did not value and appreciate what he had already done for you. You chose Option 2. You see, money was never really the issue here, at least not for us."
