In many respects the basic rough carpentry was reasonably done. They did do a couple of mistakes. The old vent stack for the plumbing had been boxed in to shield it from view from the interior of the kitchen. When they redid the plumbing the vent stack was no longer there. It had been moved to another location. They insisted in installing a vent cover were there was no longer a vent stack. I ended up paying them to install and remove that vent stack cover. Along the same line, the house was originally heated with coal burning fireplaces. There was a main chimney in the center of the house with flus for four different fire places. The chimney was removed completely to the ground. The area it encompassed was replaced with a standard wall and flooring. The only problem was that they built a stud wall on the first floor and left a void were the chimney and fireplaces had been. I paid them to build the original wall and have them tear it down. I had purchase the materials they used to build this mistaken wall. The start of the job was to re-roof the home. Part of that was to replace the soffit and fascia. I asked for so-fit venting so that cool air could come in and out through the roof vents. When they insulated the attic area, they made no allowance for the soffit vents. In order to ease there installation of insulation they installed a pull down attic stair that I had to pay for. The attic is unusable for anything. It is just a void space between the ceiling and the roof. I now have an area of my attic that is un-insulated due to this. They failed to properly insulate the kitchen ceiling, so that heat escapes the kitchen into the attic. There is a 3- 5 degree temperature difference in the kitchen and the rest of the house. The house was completely sheet rocked with 5/8 fire rated sheet rock. The problem is that the installer left a lot of irregular surfaces. Their answer was that they could do it over. The idea is to do it right the first time, so that you don't have to remove furniture and other material. The windows were purchased from Lincoln windows. The installers were Sean Perry. They didn't use the installation kit the windows came with. I found it in the trash. I can see the outside through a gap in the window and the frame. They got a factory representative to come in and look at the windows. They found that there was a bow in the window frames. Sean Perry did come back and make the changes needed. They did an unauthorized extension of the heating system into an exterior porch. In doing so they knocked a large hole in the granite foundation wall and in the finished long leaf yellow pine flooring to run duct work. I called this to their attention. They did not charge me for the work. Ultimately, they did a low grade repair to the foundation wall and the flooring. They also removed the duct work. The thing of it is, is that all the doors were replaced with pre-hung doors. Apparently the door frames had a veneer on the wood that is peeling. Some of the pre-hung doors have gaps between the door and the frame. You would think that they would have strict tolerances. On the pre-hung door for the first floor bathroom, there was such miss-alignment between the lock and the striker plate, that the door would not lock. I had repeatedly asked them to re-point the foundation walls from the outside and that didn't happen. It was beyond their capability. The house has base boards. The base board also have quarter round molding. The person that was doing the nailing, nailed them down at such and angle that the nails go through the molding into thin air between the base board and the floor. They replace all the plumbing in the house. While replacing a reconfiguration at the back porch, they had to dig holes for support beams. They dug holes into the sewer line and filled them with concrete. I was charged for the repair from them breaking my sewer line. The kitchen, bathrooms, and closets had sheet good flooring. The installer left gaps between the sheet good and the door ways. In some areas the glue they used is not holding the sheet good, causing a crackling sound when walking on it. In some areas the staples they used are showing. They should be under the molding but they aren't. They are were you can see them. Apparently they spilled some type of chemical on the sheet good, removing the finish. Another thing is that the hand cuts they made to the the quarter round molding is left unfinished, and it is showing. Especially in areas where they put down the sheet good flooring. We put in a new kitchen with a kitchen sink. The drain lines for the waste water is leaking. Their plumber came in and re-tightened the fittings so much that the compression rings were broken. What happen was that for a short period of time it seemed like the leak was fixed. Then they started to leak again. I had a third party come in and remove and replace the lines to the kitchen sink. Now there is no leak. We have a window in the kitchen, adjacent to another room. The problem is that the handles to open and close the window are very crooked.
Description of Work: I hired this company to renovate my home all the way down to the studs. They removed and replaced all plumbing, electrical, and windows(except for three they were unable to do).

Response from The Hands of Sean Perry Co.
At each opportunity our company culture is to create win/win outcomes on each project we undertake. In our nearly 18 years of experience in Asheville, we, like any professional group, have gone through learning curves that have provided meaningful opportunities for growth, professional improvement and development. Our culture was, and continues to be, one that approaches challenges with perseverance and making right what is seen as an imperfection in what we have provided for a client. We honor trust within our relationships and work diligently to maintain trust. Once it slips it can be difficult to regain. There is the rare occurrence when personalities do not match; when misunderstandings or misinterpretations cannot be overcome. I have read the review this client has provided over and again. There is certainly truth to aspects in his report, and between the lines I urge myself to understand his frustration and learn from it. While I do not feel the necessity to engage in “he said, he said” rebuttal, I will say that our work was inspected and approved at each required step of the process; we had a daily presence building and overseeing the project. Remodeling is a challenging, imperfect business. We are an award winning firm with significant remodeling experience and strive constantly to provide an unmatched positive experience for our clients. We approach each project with professionalism, integrity and a knowing that our success is built on client satisfaction which in turn lead to repeat clients and referrals. We do not take this for granted.
