How'd it go? I think it went well, and I'm picky. I want things to be done right. Fortunately, Heath Silver is the same way. He'll do everything in his power to make it right.
* For example, when I mentioned that the newly-painted surfaces seemed not smooth but 'bubbly' to me he explained that it was not uncommon to see the paint that way, as their work-lights were so strong that every tiny flaw showed up. He assured me that, once I had the car outside, I'd never notice it, but --if I did, and if it still bothered me-- they'd sand the clearcoat down and reapply it. I didn't ask them to, nor will I unless (a) I can see it clearly in ordinary sunlight and (b) it really does bother me. What I love is the fact that it's their policy to stand behind their work 100%.
* Another example: Because the accident had occurred at the start of a weekend and the pre- and post-holidays had generated additional delays in getting parts, I was concerned that my insurance policy's rental-car benefits might expire before the car was ready. Instead of saying something like "That's your problem; not mine. Call your adjuster and tell him we're still waiting for a part," Heath actually took it upon himself to call the adjuster in order to remind him of the weekend and the holiday delays in both getting the car brought to his shop and in getting parts. He was assured (and thus able to assure me in an additional phone call) that my benefits would last or even be extended, if necessary. Insurance companies are not happy about spending money unnecessarily, but the adjuster understood that the delays were circumstantial and he assured Heath that my benefits would hold out.
** The truly exceptional thing here is that Heath said he'd been prepared to cover those costs himself should the benefits not have not been extended. Now I ask you: How many other auto body shops out there would have offered to do the same?
Heath Silver is an ethical man. His is the only repair shop I've ever been to where the owners are calm and patient and willing to listen and consider every one of a customer's concerns, however small. You don't get excuses from them. You get good work and the knowledge that they stand behind everything they do, 100%.
Additional examples:
* By the time I arrived to pick up my car late Tuesday afternoon, it was near their closing time. I noticed that, though the car had been washed, there was still some dirt in a few places, and the floor mats were muddy. I mentioned that to Heath, and the car was washed again, and the mats were well-cleaned while I gave Heath my credit card and he ran it through his machine.
* Early on Wednesday morning, Heath called to tell me that he'd inadvertently run my credit card through his machine twice, thus charging me twice. I don't know about you, but it could have taken me months to figure out where that extra money had gone.
Heath could've just let it slide and kept the money -- but he didn't.
Instead,he acknowledged the error and suggested two ways of undoing the mistake: I could come in and he'd run the card again, this time crediting my account, or he c/simply give me a check for the duplicated amount, Either way, I'd have to come in.
That was fine with me because, on my way home the night before, I'd noticed some things that seemed 'off' to me: the brakes felt alarmingly spongy, the steering wheel wasn't as responsive as it had been before, and it made a very strange noise when thecar was on the incline in my driveway and handbrake was set. I wanted him to drive the car in order to determine if those things might have been related to the accident.
Y'know how some mechanics will 'check the problem' once they've been paid? They drive it around the block,. wait a few minutes, and then return the keys to you saying, "It's fine," whether it really is fine or not.
What Heath did was very different. While I sat in the passenger seat, he drove as we tried to duplicate the circumstances in which the strange noises occurred. He listened to the car as we drove up hills and down, parked facing up hill and down, and made a lot of curly turns. All of this took at least 30 minutes of Heath's time, if not more, but he never seemed annoyed or rushed. For him, the questions were "Is it possible that these steering wheel and odd brake noises are related to the accident?" and "Related or not, does any of them present a danger to the car's owner?"
--As Heath explained, had he determined that the accident was responsible for the problems, he would have called the insurance adjuster himself and worked with him to reopen the case.
--The fact that he took the time to listen to both me and to the car meant a lot. I left there secure in the knowledge that the brakes were fine and that the noises seemed to be coming from the struts (whatever they are). Heath assured me that there's no need to replace the struts, as they present no danger as they are, although the noise might be annoying down the road.
There's more I could write so that you know that the Silvers are wonderful people whose shop does excellent work which they stand behind 100%, but I think you've got the idea.
I hope I never have another automobile accident again. If I ever do, though, I know exactly where I'll take my car:
